Green beef. Is it dye, a vein, or something else? Am I overreacting? I know what I saw!
    Peter A.

I've been here a couple times previous to the visit that prompted this review. Once in mid-January, with my girlfriend and I both sick, and the temperature hovering around -20, I picked up a couple "phos to go" late on a Wednesday evening. I remember it feeling like a reasonable, and somewhat more convenient option to our regular Pho Bo Go La (you know, one of those 5 on Somerset). The other time was a few weeks later when I took my girlfriend there for lunch. I had the pho again, and she had the vegetarian chow mein. My pho was okay, once again, but her chow mein was off. The noodles were overcooked, the veggies undercooked, and everything slathered in a nice thick coat of grease. Still, she persevered, and we both put it down to a bad afternoon. Recently, we were going to school, felt ravenous, and were in the mood for Vietnamese food. We stopped in again at the kitchen, and somehow, ordered exactly the same things, but with a side of sweet and sour soup. Now, let me be clear, the sweet and sour soup was very good. We enjoyed that part. Next, came the mains. My girlfriend's chow mein was a hardened, greasy disc of over-fried noodles with an odd collection of random vegetable chunks tossed around the plate. It was disgusting. My pho came, looked okay, until upon further inspection I saw green streaks on some of the meat pieces. I called the server over, and pointed out the problems with both meals. She immediately offered to replace the chow mein, but insisted that I could eat the bowl of soup. I said that green beef wasn't something I wanted to take a risk on, and she countered that it was dye from the butcher. I don't think this happens. Does it? I don't know. Anyway, I refused to budge, we got our money back, and won't ever go back again.

The place was very steady but we got one of the few remaining tables. The menu has a lot on it and there is another, separate menu for specials. The complimentary herbal tea was nice and hot for a very cold day. Ordered was a pho for me, extra spicy and my friend got a beef and veg dish and they subbed her noodles for rice upon her request and accommodated her peanut allergy. The food was good, also. I ordered us shrimp spring rolls to start, 2 to an order. Very good. $6. The entrees... My broth was nice, albeit mild. Not that clovey taste I've experienced at other places. My pho had shrimp, beef and chicken. It was a house specialty so it only came in a medium size. This was fine as I ordered extra noodles for $2.50 to go and had some at home for dinner tonight. And, it will feed me for lunch one more time tomorrow. The containers were leak proof and the liquid survived the drive home. The staff were unobtrusive yet attentive and kind. Said to be family owned and that everything is homemade. I'll return! I love Vietnamese food and love supporting these places. I will avoid weekends though as I was told people are lined up at the door for seating. Was it the best I have ever had? No but it fit the bill and I'm glad I live close by as there are 100 other dishes I'd like to try.

It was delicious and the portion was pretty generous; you get a lot of beef! I got the Bun Bo Hue ($14) which is a spicy beef noodle soup with lemongrass. The broth was tasty and so flavourful! The portion was pretty substantial too. My boyfriend got the Bun Rieu ($14) which is a crab/tomato/pork broth based noodle soup. I had a taste of the soup and it was also really good! I especially loved that they give you a full variety of herbs to add to the soup noodles, which not all Vietnamese restaurants do these days. Too bad this location is far from me, but I would definitely come back for more!

We were lucky in our timing and managed to sit as we arrived. We always order spring rolls and rice wraps no matter where we go, and these were good. Our table enjoyed a variety of soups from a basic chicken and egg noodle to rare beef rice noodle and two special soups, one based on a traditional broth and the other Tom Yum. The traditional broth was good, flavorful and fragrant. The Tom Yum had just the right amount of heat, but was too much of a good thing for me to really enjoy it fully. The portions were good, quick and delicious. Definitely would visit again!

The service is very friendly and efficient from the moment you enter. On to the food. What I don't like is when the fresh spring rolls are made in advance and are left out until someone orders. The rice paper becomes dry and chewy and that ruins it. Sadly, Chez Lam served them like that, so they can be better. The pho soup was great. There is good flavor and ingredients are fresh. They have all the condiments on the table. I like my soup with more onion shavings and shallots but it was still tasty. I found the service to be extra good and attentive. That was much appreciated. Prices are similar to other Vietnamese restaurants. They accept cash, debit, credit. Location wise: Chez Lam is in a strip mall with a gas station, dollar store, massage therapy clinic, and a few more shops.

Found this place on Yelp and a good star rating and I was happy with the results. It's located at a large strip mall quite a ways away in Barrhaven - hence the name. Grabbed takeout at 8:15pm and it was good. Got 2 orders of spring rolls which were still very crispy when we got back from the 20 min drive. A little on the greasy side but they had fried it up fresh. The house special combo had shrimp, beef, pork and chicken - a decent amount of protein and tasty. A somewhat small restaurant but still had a few tables of patrons at that time. The staff were nice. Plenty of parking.

While parking, I searched the strip mall to find a spot for me to order food. Barrhaven Vietnamese Restaurant popped out among all the other chains. I called in an order for pickup. When I arrived the place was moderately busy, but i was greeted immediately. The restaurant itself is very cute and cozy. I will definitely be back for lunch or dinner. As we were walking out, my children noticed someone eating pho and even requested we come back. I ordered the Vermecelli with chicken and I am so grateful I did. There was so much chicken and the noodles were perfectly cooked. Even the salad was green and fresh, along with cucumber that had been cut into tiny strips. It also came with two fried spring rolls. I prefer regular spring rolls, but they were delicious, very crispy and flakey. I prefer my vermecelli completely mixed, so I added the dressing, shut the takeout box, and shook it up. This made it easier to have noodles, greens, and chicken with every bite. I was too hungry to think to take a photo, but will add some on future visits. Definitely recommend and will absolutely be back!

It was good compared to others I've tried but still missing a flavor in the broth. Service was quick. The guy who gave us the menus handed us with a paper to write down our order but didn't speak which was fine because we understood what we had to do. Everything was cooked as we ordered and the vegetable spring rolls were amazing and piping hot when they came out. We couldn't even eat/touch them until our main dishes came out. They were also quick to refill our waters as well. Interestingly enough, the guy who handed us our menus actually finally spoke perfect English when we went to pay. The beef was really tender and flavourful. I did get a fatty and gristley piece though :( but on the most part, the beef was lean. The chicken was lean and a tiny bit dry, but still flavourful a tasty. The shrimp were medium sized and ok. Not that plump nor juicy, but for the price, not surprising. The spring roll was mostly wrapper and too oily for my liking. The rice dish came with fresh cucumbers and pickled radishes and pickled carrots. The vermicelli dish came with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, which were underneath the vermicelli. It also came with pickled carrots and crushed peanuts. The fresh vegetables were fresh and the picked vegetables had a good sour bite to them. We also got a tub of fish sauce, which neither of us like, but my dad does, so I saved it and gave it to him on the weekend when I went to see my parents. I appreciated that they labelled the fish sauce with a warning to open slowly (with a smiley face, lol). Food is packed in styrofoam, which is not my preference for environmental and health reasons. Service was very courteous and efficient. I was told it would be 25 minutes. I returned in 22 minutes and they were just tying up the bag. Perfect timing! Note that the prices on their takeout menu (pictured) are outdated. My dishes were listed as $9.50 each on the menu, but I was charged $11.75, which is still a great deal. Prices have gone up as a result of the Covid Pandemic, so I get it. I would just suggest that they print new takeout menus. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path in Chinatown. Street parking only.
