Went there with a coupon with my mother. This was my first time, she had been here multiple times.when entering we were greeted by a friendly server who was responsible for the entire dining room. Although he decor is nice and clean, I don't consider it an authentic Indian feel or experience. There were a couple other tables set and eating when we arrived but there was no music on so it was like sitting in an awkward living room with your Inlaws who were listening to your entire conversation, The dinner we had was nice, the samosa and sauce were the stand out. The rice was seasoned nicely, but I found the lamb dish we ordered lacking lamb. Lots of sauce, minimal meat served. Same for the chicken dish that was served. I understand it was a dinner for two, however would have like a few pieces each to enjoy for the price. The mango ice-cream for desert tasted freezer burnt and had ice crystal chunks inside it. Would possibly give this place another try but would order off the menu instead of a pre created one just to see what the portion sizes are like and to try other options. read more

I haven't been to Vijay's in about 30 years, though it is very close to home. So we thought we'd give it a try. It was early on a Tuesday night and the place was not busy. One table of what looked like regulars/insiders were the only ones there. A couple of other couples arrived shortly thereafter and were seated at the tables right beside us. We ordered the dinner for two, rather than selecting off the menu. It came with 2 apps, 3 dishes, rice, naan, and desert. For only $34 it seemed a good deal. The onion bhaaji and somozas were ok; pretty pedestrian and fairly greasy. The requisite complementary poppadoms were ok and came with a huge vat of some over-sweet chutney. The three entres arrived and sunk the meal. The chicken was precooked and possibly leftover from the weekend. It tasted more like turkey than chicken and the korma sauce was tasteless. The aloo gobi was just a bowl of mush. The lamb bhoona dish was ok. The bread delivered as "naan" was actually a toasted focaccia bread. At this point we complained. The waitress was having none of our complaining. She asked if we had ever had Indian food before (answer: 'yes, frequently, and we love it'). Then she said that they had been there for decades and must know what they are doing. I pointed out that the naan was not naan, and she agreed. We mentioned other Indian restaurants we thought were much better, and she said, well they use more expensive meat. She said the owner would come out to see us, but he never did. I'm pretty sure the couple next to us were not enjoying their meal either. I had the mango sorbet (it was so icy it must have been a sorbet not an ice cream), but my wife was too disgusted to have desert. We declined to take the left overs. The bill came with no adjustment, so a zero tip was the only solution to the disappointment. We'll try again in another 30 years. read more

I ordered take out online through their online ordering system, which is very fast and convenient for a lunch time take out order from my work. I got the curry chicken lunch special and with out realizing it, I was going to order an extra samosa thinking it wouldn't come with one because the price was so cheap. But to my surprise it came with the curry chicken, rice and a samosa. Most places for $7.50 you just get the chicken and rice so I was very satisfied with the amount of food and price. I also decided to get as hot as possible because most Indian places give you a mild at best even when you ask for as hot as possible (possibly because of the type of people that live in this area) and this was definitely hot. When we got there it was a little crazy inside because it was 12:30pm and the staff seemed to be rushing around but in all that rush two people had asked us if we were there for the pick up order or to dine in. We got our food quickly and 2 staff members (one of which who seemed like he may have been the owner) sparked up conversations with us while still doing their jobs. The flavour of the curry was great. I don't eat Indian curry as much as Thai curry (for any one who eats both, there is a big difference) but I have some what of an idea how Indian curries should taste. What was good: the price, the service, the food and the convenience is really great . What could be better: if it was an all you can eat buffet and the hours of operation seem to be really weird. read more

We ordered through skip the dishes and the food took an hour and a half to arrive. The naan was horrible, it was dry and as if it was microwaved. The butter chicken was not good - the one from Costco tastes better than this place. The paneer was dry and looked liked tofu not cheese. I would not order again and when I called to let the restaurant know, the employee said there's nothing he can do and then hung up on me while I was speaking. Terrible customer service. Would not recommend this place, I would suggest going to Raja in Waterloo instead. read more

My favorite restaurant in KW. Everything I've had has been great. The beef vindaloo is awesome. Same goes for the curried chicken as well as the butter chicken. Samosas are large and piping hot. I prefer the vegetable to the beef. Both types come with a delicious tamarind sauce for dipping. As an alternative appetizer, the onion bhaji is AMAZING. The restaurant is a great spot to take someone for dinner. Clean and pleasant. Prices are fair. Definitely cheaper than the food is actually worth. Lunch specials of curried/butter chicken with a samosa and a pop for under 10 bucks can't be beat. Highly, highly recommended. read more

Ordered Vegetable Biriyani for take away. They gave me some sort of pulao. There was no biriyani at all. All it has inside was raisins, raisins and more raisins. We ordered medium spice but what we got was some sweet made of raisins. I did call this guy up to discuss the terrible thing called Biriyani. No prizes for guessing how the response was. "They were in business for 35 years. They can't please everyone. We don't know where I were before"... Blah blah. That pissed me off. I YELLED at that terrible piece of brain serving the calls and cut him off. I should have read the bad reviews first before even attempting it. We threw the food to the bin. read more

Very average. The Shahjahani Chicken Biriyani was alright. The rice was overcooked and not of good quality. The chicken lacked seasoning and the meal did not have an authentic Indian flavour. Don't know how this restaurant has survived for decades. read more

I went there for dinner tonight and it was wonderful! We had a coupon and for $40 we had a huge meal, two glasses of wine and leftovers to take. Everything has a wonderful flavour and just the right amount of spice. I will definitely be going back! read more

Super disappointed. Got take out butter chickens and naan -$35. They were watery, grainy and bland. Not too mention little meat, as one poster mentioned. Can't comment on the wait staff since it was a pick up order, but I honestly thought I walked in to the wrong place. The first door you see says,"Pub on Weber" and looks like an English pub with a restaurant to the right. I've had some cheap curry, but this is probably the worst I've had in the KW area! Surprisingly, this place has a high rating but I still don't know WHY!!!. The food was TERRIBLE! (throwing up) and the customer service was even worse. The owner, Vijay has no respect for his customer. We ordered the following items and this is what we had to say about it..The daal looked like it was just boiled with no spices, the saag paneer looked like the canned saag boiled with hard paneer cubes, the chicken briyani had no flavour and very disgusting (rice overcooked). The naan looked like bread and somosa were drenched in oil. Normally, I don't write reviews but this was worth it so it can save someone else from going to Vijay's. The owner is disrespectful and did not even want to speak to us when we complained about his food. We complained to the server about the food being very bad. We told her we won't eat anything and she took all the food away. She told Vijay about the food and he walked away to the cashier and she came to hand us the bill. She said we would have to pay. We told her its not about the bill because we are ready to pay but we would like to speak to the owner and she said he doesn't want to speak to us. This made us even more mad because we wasted our time and the food was terrible which we didn't even eat. She went to him and told him we need to talk to him and he came looking angry and started being very disrespectful telling us we shouldn't have complained about his food. He was being defensive! HA!HA! He mentioned he had 31 years of experience ...Ha!HA! which was a joke!..if you really had 31 years of experience then you wouldn't be serving disgusting food and be rude to your customers. This was the worst food we have ever had!!!!! He was a joke! My advice to everyone who wants to try good Indian food is to go to Masala Bay - Waterloo. They do know how to treat you well and serve you the finest Indian food. Maybe Vijay should go there to learn how to cook and learn some respect! WORST PLACE EVER! WILL NEVER GO BACK! Vijay's is one of my favourite places to eat in Kitchener-Waterloo. The food is excellent- but be warned, when the menu says hot, they mean HOT!!! I like spicy food and thought I would like my food hot, but to be honest it was way too hot for me. Medium is plenty hot for me. The servers are pleasant and never make you feel ignorant for asking about the menu items. Pricing is very good. Wish there was a bit more room but they work with the space they've got. read more

Purchased the Butter Chicken at the Vijay's pop up stand in Vincenzo's and ended up with an inch long screw in the meal! I almost chipped a tooth but it could have been so much worse. Vincezo's gladly refunded my money but when Vijay's was notified about the incident they never responded. When I followed up with them 2 weeks later, Vijay himself said he thought the manner was resolved because my $7 had been refunded!!! Will never eat there again. For all those who do, check your food first or risk a hospital visit. read more
