There were a couple of tight turns to take, so I was concerned to find someone who knows what they are doing with our baby grand. I had a very difficult move up several flights of outdoor wooden stairs, and the first general mover scheduled to do it was not properly equipped to actually do when they arrived. I called Mark from Viking after reading the great Yelp reviews, and he came the very same day with 2 wonderful guys, and moved my piano all the way to the top (and around a very tight turn) with great attitudes and a sense of humor the whole time. The two guys that own and operate this business are absolute professionals. I've used them three times now and this last time was particularly tricky because it involved a super steep driveway, a number of stairs, and a very surly piano owner. They put everyone at ease, got the piano out of the other house and into my house with zero trouble or drama. They are just the sweetest guys and also know a ton about pianos from the many years they've been moving them. The piano they handled was a baby grand from 1930 and they highlighted an area of sensitivity in one of the leg joints for me, which I would have never been aware of otherwise. They also recommended placement within our music room for the best sound and protection for the piano. Mark and his partner are Absolute Over-achievers. We bought a piano in Marin County ( NO, not from a broker / dealer / or those faux institution charity events ) and needed to transport it to the South Bay. Most piano movers stopped answering their phones / replying to emails starting Wednesday afternoon but fortunately enough I was able to get a hold of Mark over thanksgiving weekend while he was on vacation. He was very courteous and professional and was able to give me a very fair quote (to my surprise cheaper than several generic furniture moving companies supposedly with piano moving expertise) once I gave him the piano model, pickup, and destination. He kept in touch over the weekend and was very efficient to coordinate with the seller regarding the pickup and kept me notified of his ETA. He and his partner were absolutely meticulous with handling the piano (strapped and on a purposely built pallet) and these guys are friendly and professional throughout. Mark and crew moved our 6'+ grand from san francisco to sonoma. Everything went great (sometimes its best not to watch ;-). He knows what he is doing, on time, personable and he suggested we play around with the piano in different locations. He moved it over the week end because of our schedule, others wanted us to be on call so they could gang it up with other moves, (which is understandable). These guys are real pros. They moved a relic from 1902 that was, in their own words, "the heaviest upright [they'd] ever seen." No damage done to either home nor to the beautiful instrument. They also waited patiently and held the piano on a dolly long enough for me to vacuum up all the cobwebs and give the back of the soundboard a thorough cleaning. Viking recently moved a Steinway upright from my apartment with narrow doors and wrong-way twisting hallways, down a further turing flight of inside stairs with railing, a landing, and yet more outside stairs with turns (a total of 49 steps). And they had to park their truck on the steep driveway. I thought I'd have to hire a piano technician to completely dismantle the piano, as this was done to bring it in 10 years ago, but no -- Viking was able to do it, carefully and with extraordinary good humor and communication among the movers. I had a wonderful experience working with Mark and his helper Tom with a long distance move. My mother was relocating from Southern California to Marin and we needed to find a mover who would move her very valuable Steinway Piano in addition to a bunch of her furniture she wanted to move into self-storage. At first, I obtained estimates from many general movers who either were not insured enough or who just told me that I'd need to hire a separate piano mover to move the Steinway since it was a grand piano and considered a specialty item. I have donated a piano & Viking Piano Movers were hired for the job of moving it. They were polite and showed up on time to do the job, I was told that they are bonded and insured etc. however.... There was a TV sitting on top of the piano when Mark & his helper showed up for the pickup. Mark helped me move the TV from the top of the piano to the floor, then the piano was picked up and they left. Couple of minutes later when I went to turn on the TV the screen was flickering and I noticed a CRACK in the upper left corner where Mark was holding it during the move. Unfortunately when I contacted Mark about it, he brushed me off right away, saying it was not his fault. I was told that he was hired by another party (not me) to move the piano not the TV and that he was not responsible for any damage to anything but the piano. I really didn't expect that kind of treatment from these guys. Sometimes things do go wrong and you accidentally brake other people's stuff while trying to be nice, but at least you should own up to it and make things right. I wish I didn't have to write this review, but I feel that current and future customer's of Viking Piano Moves should be forewarned, so they are not left out to dry like I was. read more
