First off, I absolutely love their salsa, queso, and chips. They are some of the best in the business and they are just absolutely addictive. The chips are served nice and warm and have a light crunch to them, not overly heavy. Their salsa is just addictive and when you pair it with their queso, it's ridiculous. I ordered the chicken supreme dish I think is what it was called. Chicken breast flattened and nicely grilled, topped with mushrooms and onions and cheese. Serve with rice and beans, I couldn't finish at all, but I surely wanted to. The service was very friendly and attentive, mostly comfortable atmosphere. Loud patrons, a couple boot away, put a damp around things, but that's not really the fault of the restaurant, just inconsiderate, loud patrons. The only issue I have, is when we walked in the place just kind of smelled funky. They had a couple of candles lit, I think to mask the odor. And I really can't say what it was, but it was across between maybe garbage and trash smell. Aside from the unpleasant smell when you walk in, the food and service was on point. Went for a night of Mexican inspired dining with the Mrs. and we're wanting to expand our list of local spots so decided to give this place a try. Parking was easy for the area and well lit. We were seated quickly and the usual chips and salsa arrived pronto. Salsa was very tasty, likely made in house. Menu has almost too many options, everything you could want in a restaurant like this. Made our selections and the food was outstanding. Fresh, delicious, and spicy enough without being crazy hot. Server was prompt with tea refills and attentive to all our needs. Dining room was not overly loud even with a couple of large groups and a kids birthday party in full swing. Nice dinner and dining experience, we will return. read more

I got the steak nachos which cost $24 because of had to purchase additional cheese. They only give you a tiny amount of cheese. The food was EXTREMELY bland and flavorless. The steak was little scraps, probably less than 2 ounces. The cheese had no flavor at all. The service was poor as well. The restaurant has an 88% health rating. What a great find! Hubby and I drove all day from Lake Charles, Louisiana, and were looking for place to eat dinner - at 9:30 - on President's Day - at the start of Mardi Gras. We had already tried another restaurant down the street that turned us away as they had closed early, and we were desperate to find someplace good that was still open. These guys graciously let us come in and served us, even though they were cleaning up to close for the evening. I ordered the Lengua Platter, and Hubby got the Mixed Fajita Nachos Supreme. We had some chips and a thick, flavorful salsa with a mild kick to it while the kittchen prepared our order. The Lengua was very tender and served in large slices with a delicious salsa verde; I had asked if they could substitute the rice with veggies, and the chef obliged with grilled green and red peppers with onions. The refried beans were very tasty; a litttle on the lukewarm side, but hey, they were shutting down the kitchen when we showed up so it was understandable. The veggies, however were piping hot and expertly prepared. Hubby had the Mixed Fajita Nachos Supreme which were The BEST nachos he and I had ever had! The Crispy chips were adorned with beef, chicken, and shrimp - all perfectly cooked and covered in an amazing queso cheese sauce. I say amazing, because I have had plenty of queso that tasted like melted cheese which has totally turned me off of it, but this queso was just the opposite with a phenomenal flavor and silky texture. Adding sour cream, guacamole, tomato and lettuce, made it Supreme and they truly were. We will be back to try more of their specialties, but we will definitely be orderimg the Mixed Fajita Nachos Supreme again, absolutely fantastic. read more

Read 3rd paragraph "in this time" because my husband became Ill 8 days after this meal. It was good. We had to say no to a couple of booths because they had not been yet cleaned and I got a disgusted look from the manager But there was very visible food on the bench seats. And tables. I loved the salsa but they brought the chips out before we were ready to eat them so they were cold by the time we could eat them. We were busy holding our menus and deciding what we were going to eat. In this time of Covid, I appreciate a straw that is wrapped in paper the fact that I watched our server grab her face covid diaper and then touch my glass and straw was very offputting If I go back, I would eat what my husband had a dinner, it was more appropriate size of portion to price, The lunch portion was 1/2c stuffing to include vegetables with 1/2 a slice of tomato and 2 tablespoons of meat for stuffing in a greasy fried tortilla shell thing. I would never order that again. Trying to pay was very uncomfortable. After sitting there with empty plates for a time, I asked for the ticket so we could leave and she forgot, so when I asked again she was on her way to somebody's table and went ahead and took their order, so I got up and stood at the bar until I would get my receipt. It was just frustrating the way it went. It was very slow during that time and they were eating their meals while working, so they didn't have time for us. the food was a total fail. Queso tasted like it came out of a jar of Tostitos, so did the salsa. the chimichanga is a fried stuffed tortilla, but the queso they smothered it with made it soft couldn't tell if it was fried. No salad served with the chimi. Just a major dissapointment. The restaurant was nicely decorated, clean with a good feel and environment, the service was good, prompt and courteous. Of course the name of the game in the restaurant business is taste of the food and the service. The food at Villa del Rey Covina is always awesome, I mean every time. What was different this visit was when we arrived there were only two members of the wait staff working the floor and the room was filling up. As we stood there waiting to be seated we watched these two young women working the floor and keeping up with all of the orders, delivering drinks, delivering food, sitting new customers and taking orders. It was Saturday 06 January 2024. These two young women (around 4:30 PM was when they were working) did a world class effort and did not miss a beat. The crowd could have kept 4 servers busy but two did the job! These two servers did a great job and the owners need to recognize their dedication and attitude. A reward is in order. These two servers kept the reputation of this restaurant in tact. Bravo! We will continue to eat here when we want world class Mexican! read more

Really yummy for authentic street tacos! I tried the steak (asada) It was perfectly seasoned and very tender served with onions and cilantro served on a corn tortilla with a slice of lime. I reallyyy wanted to love this place, especially reading all the good reviews! The chips and salsa was very yummy, but unfortunately no refill. I did sit at the bar though, so maybe that was it. I thought the margarita was good, and at $3 at happy hour (2-5 pm) it was a steal! They had a good selection of beers on tap. My problem came with the service...the lady serving us wasn't very helpful and my water glass was never filled. When it came time to get the check, I realized she made a mistake and kindly reminded her it was happy hour (it was 3 pm). To my surprise she told me I was wrong and that there was no special drinks on Friday! And so I tried to show her the menu and she wouldn't look at it...she asked another coworker and the coworker apologized and said we were right. In their defense, she said we were the first to come to happy hour in a month so they didn't realize it. The chalkboard also said May: $3 margs. But she said that didn't apply on Friday? Hmm. Maybe they need to make prices clearer? Anyways, with lots of happy hours in Mobile I probably won't come back. Wish I had tried the tacos though! read more

This is the third time we've been here. I'm not sure why my review didn't post last time. This place is phenomenal! I most enjoy the street tacos. They are every bit as good as the ones we used to get off food trucks out in California! My husband usually prefers to get the poblano relleno but he also likes the street tacos too. When we came with friends they ordered the chimichanga and carnitas and they loved them. The restaurant is well lit so we're not peering for our food in the dark. But it's not the bright florescent lights which hurt the eyes after a while. The decor is appropriately festive without being kitschy. It is also very clean and well maintained. For dessert I suggest either the sopapillas or the flan. Both are excellent and not served smothered in whipped cream or chocolate sauce. The flan is deliciously smooth and creamy while the sopapillas are light and airy. read more

My first visit but not my last! I emvarked upon my maiden voyage to the Villa Del Ray today and really enjoy the destination. The layout is he same as when Briquettes was in this location a few years ago so it has a nice ambiance. The Del Ray owners did a classy job transitioning the place. I enjoyed $2 on-tap beer (Nice!) AND some Street Tacos, which I love! See Pics - I order 3 tacos to get a sampling of the fare. All are served on corn tortillas with pico de gallo. I opted for one Cameron (shrimp), one Carnitas (pork) and one Lengua (beef tongue). Each was cooked to perfection and offered a slightly distinct flavor profile, most notably the shrimp. The pork was not dry and flavered as if braised. The Lengua was VERY tender, cut into cube shapes and lightly season. The shrimp were popcorn size and tender. The seasoning on the tacos was really nice bit I did not enjoy paying $0.50/taco for a frugal sprinkling of shredded cheese. The complimentary chips and salsa were as expected. Chips were warms and fresh tasting but the salsa had a kick! I will be back but not sure if Villa Del Ray will be a take the kids to type place.
