Staying here is an unparalleled experience--no other hotel comes close. After my first visit last year, I found myself thinking about this place almost every day. Once again, it exceeded all my expectations. The staff are genuinely some of the kindest people you'll ever meet. Though I barely know them, they made me feel so welcome it was almost as if they were family. This hotel has a quality that can only be described as magical and heavenly.

Villa Mara is an adults only, exclusive, high-end luxury boutique hotel located in Carmel. It is close to the beach yet hidden in a quiet neighborhood. On May 17, 1980 we got married at the Lodge at Pebble Beach and honeymooned at the Sandpiper. In 2019 the Sandpiper was bought, torn down and re-emerged as the new, luxury 16 room Villa Mara. Each room is different and unique. On May 17, 2024 we returned to celebrate our 44 years anniversary. When we arrived we were warmly greeted with a glass of wine. Our luggage was brought quickly to our upstairs room overlooking the ocean. Each room includes free snacks and a small refrigerator stocked with beverages. The complimentary breakfast was delicious. It was a memorable stay.

The absolute best and cutest boutique hotel ! This place is a hidden gem. In the residential area of Carmel. 1 block away from the water. Hotel is so cozy and homey. Definitely reminds me of a bed and breakfast. Staff is super nice and accommodating. Very clean and quiet hotel with so many nice touches. 100/100 recommend staying here for a relaxing quiet getaway

In all fairness, the service and location were great. My issue is with the price, at upwards of $800 plus tax a night on some weekend nights, it feels excessive, and at that price you have a right to be a bit more critical: - the refreshments in the room weren't replenished on the second day. Felt stingy - I saw a pincher bug in the room on the first night - breakfast felt stingy as you were limited to one thing from each section on the menu even though you paid so much. Pretty limited menu as well. The items that we tried did taste good though. - refrigerator in the room does not keep beverages cold at all. And I know we didn't have a defective one because the staff replaced it and it was still the same situation. Bad choice of refrigerator on their end. - it wasn't clear on how you were supposed to request anything from the staff once you were in the room, nothing posted anywhere on what number to call for service of any kind. I called the main phone number they have on google and luckily that was the one. Didn't reach someone until the second try though. They also mentioned that you can text the number, but when I did that they never responded, I had to call them again. They claimed there were technical difficulties. Overall I don't regret the stay, I do regret my wife paying so much for this place for our stay. It didn't feel worth as much as we paid in all honesty.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The attention to detail and accommodations were above expectations. We stayed in the cottage and loved our privacy especially around the fire pit. It was a great place to recharge and just across from the ocean too! We loved being able to ride around on the bikes they provide as well and the brunch was super cute. Rocky and Joseph are amazing and they took good care of us during our stay. We just loved how intimate the setting was and we will definitely be back on our next getaway to Carmel!

Some of the best service, with some of the best staff my wife and I have ever met. To say they make this place feel like home would be an understatement. Pull up a chair to the bar, have a slice of their cake testing (come on, who else does something that fun for such a small boutique hotel), and enjoy the amazing location. You won't regret it!

This new boutique hotel is easily my favorite place to stay in Carmel. Beautiful property, attention to detail, great service, and wonderful location on Carmel Point, one block from the ocean. Feels like you are staying at your very tasteful friends home. So comfortable and well done. The small bar is well appointed. Several outdoor fire-it areas allow for communal or private relaxation. Bikes to borrow. Wish I could stay for a month. Some rooms have views of the ocean. I would say this is the best hotel stay in Carmel.

We selected Villa Mara for a two-night stay, excited to try out the newest boutique hotel in Carmel. Prices are still high across the board in Carmel and many other spots, and Villa Mara isn't cheap, but it's competitive with the better properties in the area (and about 25% of the cost of staying at Ventana or Post Ranch right now) and offers a truly personal/personalized experience with elegant, modern and quiet lodging. It's located about a mile south of Ocean Ave. and the Carmel buzz - but it offers walk-around-the-block beach access, some water views, and many accoutrements that made us feel very pampered while offering some separation from the not-so-relaxing elements of downtown. The Lobos room we had booked wasn't available due to a maintenance issue, but it didn't matter - we received a nearly identical room with killer ocean views, a balcony with even better views, a mini-bar with beer, water and other goodies, and endless wine (several different options) from the in-house bar in the lobby. Monterey resident Roque, who welcomed us and provided numerous insights from eating places to the best place to charge our EV (Seaside!). The room itself has that "just built" feeling and was very comfortable, the bathroom featuring heated floors and a large shower. While you can hear a little activity in the lobby in the AM, where you can get coffee and goodies, the heavy doors keep most noise out, and we couldn't hear anything after 8 PM. Also, being off the "main strip" provides much-needed separation; there are myriad places to walk, run, bike (they have bikes you can borrow), or take off for a trip to Carmel Valley, Big Sur, or Monterey. Street parking is ample and we had no issues finding spots, which would be a challenge in a similar property closer to downtown. In-room bathroom goods are incomparable, with Le Labo representing the most enjoyable, unisex shower/bath combo I've ever used, and we've stayed at myriad top hotels across the US and beyond. They offer samples to take home as well, so you're not just snagging hotel stuff and feeling bad about it (at least we would). The lobby and gardens are without compare. There are places to sit and enjoy the hundreds of plants; local and beyond artwork dotting the interior; and just an overall sense of relaxation and unbridled appreciation of the opulence and bounty of the environs. I can't say enough about the bar, where they have everything from fresh-baked cookies to wellness shots (e.g., elderberry) to beer and more. We didn't partake of the breakfast items but they've got 'em! An unequivocal 5 stars for the best (for us) boutique property that is currently available in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

    Lobby/breakfast area

We had the best time at Villa Mara. The service and overall experience was perfect. Welcome drinks when we arrived, cookies at turndown service, an incredible complimentary breakfast, and very attentive and helpful staff. To top it all off the location is amazing. And I would die for the overflow tub in our suite. We'll definitely be back.

The central foyer -- communal sitting, eating, and bar space.

They had offered us wine (red or white) and a whole variety of snacks that one Can find on a charcuterie board. They also have a coffee machine where they can make you a personal cup of coffee. Shayla had checked us in and showed us to our room and explained how things worked inside the room and where things were placed. We had booked the deluxe guest room. The room had a fireplace and a 2 person tub. The bed had fine Italian linens with down feather topper and pillows. I slept so well from the comfiness of the bed. They also included 2 beautiful robes and slippers. Parking was a bit snug, but there were 2 spaces that fit much larger cars. You can also park on the street as well. Location was excellent as we were just a few blocks from ocean Ave where all The shops were. The breakfast was amazing which included freshly baked quiches, muffins, croissants, granola and yogurt and more. They will bring the breakfast into your room every morning with your choice of time. They will also include two flasks where you can refill water in the station outside. I highly recommend coming here and will definitely visit again.

At least in our room, we did have some space to move around although we were on a lower level and could hear some noise outside. There were some aspects that were interesting- there were two luggage racks which was a nice touch, but each was quite rickety and threatening to collapse at any moment. For the cost of the room, you would think they could repair them or replace them. The room was also quite hot , and there is no AC so we were provided with a fan that has seen much better days. Again for the cost, maybe update this?! I will say the towels were fantastic and incredibly soft. The water pressure in the shower was also very good. Also, the mattress provided good support for me. I'm a side sleeper and normally wake up with aches but I did not encounter any during my stay. The staff for the most part was decent, but it also depended on who you interacted with. Some were definitely not as friendly as others and seemed to know only peripheral details. The mini fridge was only stocked with sparkling or still water and cookies were brought each night but if you say at the Del Sol location in Napa, their mini fridges are stocked with five times the type of drinks and snacks so finding that the selection here to be extremely limited was very disappointing. The room was cleaned each day and there was turn down service at night. The location is decent, and it's walkable. They have valet car service, but it's clear they don't have a dedicated lot but rather street park. My car was covered with debris and quite dirty when returned. I guess given the location space is limited. Bottom line- If I were ever to return, it's unlikely I would stay here again. It's not worth the cost.

The historic building is impressive, as is the interior lobby, living room, restaurant/bar and 1st floor courtyard. Unfortunately, the guest rooms --or more specifically, Room 207 leaves a lot to be desired. As others have noted, the rooms are indeed small and in need of updating. Bed comfort is subjective. I've stayed at plenty of hotels and generally never had trouble falling asleep, but I did find both the bed and pillows to be overly firm and uncomfortable. The bigger disappointment for me was the noise. 207 is the closest room to the 2nd floor staircase landing, and there's a hallway bench right outside the room door. On multiple occasions, I had to listen to someone sitting on the bench right outside my door talking loudly on their phone before heading downstairs. The utility closet next to Room 207 also resulted in unwanted noise. And there was persistent noise coming from the alleyway directly below my room windows --loud talking, laughing, singing and coughing late into the night and early morning. The hotel staff I interacted with were all friendly and helpful and the building is ideally located in the heart of downtown Carmel. I expected more though for what worked out to be a $600 a night stay.

He has 0 customer service skills and should not be customer facing. He had minimal eye contact, cold demeanor as if we were bothering him, mumbling, and just overall unpleasant. He had the demeanor of a bro cashier at a GNC. There was a guy next to him which I assume was IT or something since he was messing with something at the front. There was a woman who brought us a welcome glass of champagne, and Angel - who gave us a brief tour and brought our luggage to the room. Angel and the woman were nice. Champagne was good, however I wish they offered non alcoholic options like a juice or sparking cider. Throughout our stay, we encountered many staff on the property in passing - not a single smile from any of them. Even the housekeeping staff at a BestWestern are nicer than the staff here. - Room: gorgeous but small. Booking a room for 2 does not just mean having a big enough bed, but actually room for 2 humans to move around. There is not enough room to lay your luggage out anywhere, and the bathroom was narrow. I would've liked to have a towel bar by the sink instead of having a silly rock be what holds the towel up. The room is aesthetically stunning and the bed was very comfortable. I loved the ambient lighting options and motion activated under-lighting. I liked that we had a balcony. I enjoyed the soaps / lotions, as well all the nespresso in the room. Air conditioning worked well. Room was very clean. - Parking: parking was easy in the day. We lucked out at night but guests arriving after 8pm had nowhere to park, which we witnessed first hand. We saw a guest told the staff "the lot is full", and the staff said "just take the EV spot". What about your guests with EVs who need to charge their cars for the night? On another day, a large car was parked in the entrance into the hotel (not the street) and stayed there for 15 min which blocked entry for everyone else - i wish the staff came out to inform the guest that they couldn't leave their car the. The main lot is very tight with slim spots and awkward parking angles, but the back lot was good . While this wasn't an issue for me, I can imagine coming off of a long flight, finally getting to the hotel at night, and being frustrated at the lack of available parking. - Breakfast: this is the main reason we wanted to stay here. The breakfast itself is good, not great. The French toast, juice, chia pudding and eggs are best things - everything else is okay as I found some things to be stale such as the waffles and muffins. I did enjoy how the food is displayed, and there lots of variety. Staff is constantly refilling items so you never have to worry about things running out, regardless of when you arrive for breakfast. Breakfast is much later than it is at other hotels, and with a small window (8-10am), which can be an issue if you are planning to eat early prior to a hike. 2 staff stay in the area however they just stare at you from the corner of the room. No smile, no good morning. The first day, I felt like we were being stared at as if we were freeloaders sneaking in for free breakfast. It was very uncomfortable. Not sure if they were staring because we're younger than a majority of the other guests but there really is no excuse. I think they should do a wrist band system or something if they insist on eyeing people. Property- they have a cafe by the breakfast area where you can order hand crafted pizza. We didn't do this but it smelled great. The location is convenient with lots of restaurants within walking distance . As a hotel guest, you get a discount at the Foray restaurant, which is closed mondays and Tuesdays Overall: Beautiful, but I don't think I'd stay again. For the price point and all the amenities, I expected to be in love with this hotel. At other hotels with this price point, I'm usually like "I don't want leave!", but not here. It wasn't a bad stay, but the experience didn't match the price point. I hope they get better staff or else I could see this hotel failing in the future.
