Husband is a huge Doris Day fan. We visited Carmel and the Cypress and Terry's was on his bucket list. We did not stay here as we are beach bum boys. The architecture is beautiful and well maintained. We sat in the living room, just inside the hotel while we waited for Terry's to open. Room was amazing. At the back is a huge fireplace. A piano off to the side. Doris movie posters throughout. It is on the list for at least a night or two just to say we stayed here. read more

Booked a stay at the Cypress Inn over the 4th of July weekend to enjoy beautiful Carmel and keep my canine BFF calm and safe. The historic building is impressive, as is the interior lobby, living room, restaurant/bar and 1st floor courtyard. Unfortunately, the guest rooms --or more specifically, Room 207 leaves a lot to be desired. As others have noted, the rooms are indeed small and in need of updating. Bed comfort is subjective. I've stayed at plenty of hotels and generally never had trouble falling asleep, but I did find both the bed and pillows to be overly firm and uncomfortable. The bigger disappointment for me was the noise. 207 is the closest room to the 2nd floor staircase landing, and there's a hallway bench right outside the room door. On multiple occasions, I had to listen to someone sitting on the bench right outside my door talking loudly on their phone before heading downstairs. The utility closet next to Room 207 also resulted in unwanted noise. And there was persistent noise coming from the alleyway directly below my room windows --loud talking, laughing, singing and coughing late into the night and early morning. The hotel staff I interacted with were all friendly and helpful and the building is ideally located in the heart of downtown Carmel. I expected more though for what worked out to be a $600 a night stay. read more

First off, I really like that the hotel is dog friendly and the Doris Day history is pretty cool. The lobby and dining areas are nice. But otherwise, the actual rooms are quite dated, dingy, tiny, and overpriced for what they are. The service is mixed: The bellboy was friendly and helpful but it was hit or miss with other staff -- some were friendly and some were kind of snooty. For example, I asked about Yappy Hour at 5 p.m. and was told at first "we don't do that anymore" and then weirdly said we missed it when other recent guests have said you can experience that at 5. So bizarre. A unique, historic hotel but the unfriendliness left me a bit disappointed. read more

Absolutely hands-down the best place I've ever stayed not only by myself, but with my dog (I've stayed in some nice place)!! We drove HWY 1 to Malibu and Carmel was one of my stops. Looked up a dog friendly restaurant, ended up here and well fell in love. Mostly with the staff but the city too. We rearranged our trip and are now here for 5 days!!! This is our third visit and again staying in room 119 which is located off the quite courtyard. The staff and accommodations are great as with our previous visits. For this reservation I remembered to request a mini refrigerator which was great for keeping our refreshments. As on a previous visit I reserved a parking space in their dedicated lot on the next block. This is a must as street parking is sparse. They still have live entertainment on Friday and Saturday which is extremely popular. Don't miss Dino at the piano on Fridays. read more

This rating is because of the food alone. I normally don''t review things of this nature, but being that everything on the menu started around $20, I am hoping to prevent others from making the same mistake. Service, atmosphere drinks, and ambience were great. We stopped to have some drinks and snacks at the bar. Apparently Doris Day once owned this hotel. Staff was extremely attentive and quick with their service, and the hotel is very tastefully decorated with the appropriate retro vibe. The expresso martini was well put together and totally acceptable; maybe not for $21 though. There was a couple eating at a table in the bar that had a full size dog that just wouldn't quit barking. Crazy, but apparently it was one of the first dog friendly hotels. The meatballs marinara tasted like they were straight from Costco with an unflavored marinara from the jar. We had the quarter burger with cheese that hardly anyone took more than 1 bite. Overcooked and just drab. And we had the fries that were most certainly a cysco product and just been dropped in the fryer. Absolutely nothing that stood out. $165 dollar tab with tip that consisted of 3 sub-par appetizers and 4 drinks. So, tour the hotel, get drinks, but eat elsewhere. read more

I spent this weekend in Cypress Inn on Friday and Saturday night. This is my favorite place when I go to Carmel, but this time was an experience. I will not forget we came Friday night and had dinner at Terry's restaurant. It was amazing. Then the unthinkable happened on Saturday. Went down to the beach on Saturday morning and was running in the beach with my dog, and I broke my ankle. They went out of their way to make sure that we were well taken care of. They got me a bigger room so my scooter could fit. They let my husband park in the very front since I was having a hard time getting in and out. And the bell hop Antonio was amazing as soon as he found out what it happened he met us out at the front of the hotel made sure he helped my husband get me out of the car went and moved all our stuff to the other room and also got a wheelchair for me. He is the most excellent bellhop I have ever seen in my life he was even accommodating the next day when we left. I'm in awe of this hotel and their staff Doris Day would be proud. read more

Beware their draconian cancellation policy. There is no rescheduling of a booking. If your family becomes ill, they would rather have you come to their hotel than allow you to reschedule. (Let that sink in a moment...) If you find yourself at this hotel, beware those around you who may cough or sneeze; they likely couldn't afford to waste their deposit. The staff I spoke with were cold, uncaring, uninterested in resolving the issue amicably. In fact, they stated they would rather 1) have me come to the hotel ill or 2) lose me as a customer forever rather than allow me to reschedule my stay (not cancel, mind you, reschedule). It's a shame a business so pivotal to the tourism of Carmel could affect so many other local businesses in this manner. As a result, I've had to "cancel" Refuge spa visits, Mad Dog Enlishman bike rentals and a few reservations at local eateries. Cancel rather than reschedule. It's rigidity like this that will be the downfall of this business. And I hope it is. read more

This inn was truly a beautiful experience. My room was absolutely splendid. I absolutely loved the fireplace! The restaurant was fantastic. The food amazing. They even had a live singer on the night I was there. The staff was truly exceptional. And I have to keep bragging about the rooms! The comfort it was so luxury. We got so lucky and got the last room available on New Year's Eve, a last-minute cancellation. Cannot recommend this hotel enough for any night but especially New Year's Eve! A hotel packed with our kinda people, dog lovers, dogs everywhere, a special place for people who love charming inns and dogs. Our boy Gerbert had the best time! Overfloweth with warmth, delicious breakfast included (eggs popovers oatmeal fruit sausage coffee), and four hours of music on New Year's Eve from a cabaret singer right in the living room. Celebrated at midnight and it was such a happy party. Everyone dancing and singing. So fun, hilarious, classy, unlike any place you've been. Even had a fireplace in our room. Can't rave about it enough. And then you get to wake up by the ocean! Thank you for such a special New Year's! 5 stars!!!! read more

I can't begin to say enough about the Cypress Inn. My dream has always been to stay at "the Doris Day hotel," as I used to say. Doris Day and her partner, Dennis LeVett became co-owners of the historic hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea. in the mid 1980's. The hotel resonates with charm and hospitality as soon as you walk through the door. The staff is warm and friendly and is there to meet your every need. The entire hotel is dog friendly and dogs are allowed everywhere. Our stay was in a King Suite on the second floor (there are only two floors) and included a great living room with a fireplace. The bedroom had an amazing king bed that was so comfortable that I would consider calling this place home! Both locals and tourists gather here for the great live entertainment in the Living Room downstairs Thursday through Sunday nights. A complementary breakfast (scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, pastries, bagels, croissants, etc.) is served every day and is actually very good! There is a full bar attached to Terry's Place, the hotel restaurant. The location, on 7th and Lincoln is amazing and we could walk everywhere. Parking was very easy on the street. We loved this hotel so much that we booked our next visit already! read more

Charming, comfortable, and tranquil. Perfect location in Carmel. VERY dog friendly. Charming lounge is host to live singing. Terry's restaurant serves up good food and tastes even better in the quaint brick -lined outdoor space. The room was well-appointed and had all comforts. Yes, small compared to recently built hotels but it works and is fully functional. There were two adults and two large dogs and it was very doable. The room itself was adequate, definitely a dated building that could use an update; I don't think it had AC. All that being said I would stay there again. read more

We had a delightful stay! The staff is exceptional. Any request is cheerfully fulfilled. Everyone who works here seems to love being part of the hotel. Our room was small and cozy. But, except for the bed, which was beyond firm, was clean and nicely appointed. Breakfast is included and there is plenty to choose from--popovers, bagels, pastries, eggs, sausage, hot and cold cereals, yogurts, juices, coffee, tea, and lots more. There are stacks of various morning newspapers. Dogs are welcome in the rooms, the breakfast area, and the courtyard. The staff goes out of its way to accommodate pets and their people. There is a dog shower, but you need to ask about it and request dog towels. The key to having an incredible stay is asking the staff for what you need. You'll get it. Also, if you're used to chain cookie-cutter hotels with microwaves, mini-friges, and coffee makers in the room, you need to adjust your expectations. This is an elegant hotel where your needs will be met by asking the staff. Service is exceptional. read more

Booked this hotel because of its location and positive reviews, and was looking for a nice, peaceful respite. Instead, we were given a room above the patio dining area which was extremely noisy until 8:30 at night. A mention of the room's location by the front desk was certainly in order here. 2nd floor room was good size, but the bathroom was extremely small. Great bed, though, and the location is perfect for downtown strolling. Given the high price point, however, we wouldn't stay here again...especially compared to similar pricing in town. read more

I recently stayed at this hotel white attending a wedding that took place in Salinas. My party actually reserved a large room on the first floor + the outdoor patio for the wedding reception. The hotel accommodated our guests almost perfectly. The hotel is clean, cozy and elegant. The customer service was spectacular. The hotel bar does a fantastic job with their breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. When making reservations for rooms, the restaurant patio and their gathering room, the hotel did a great job at making everything look amazing and they stayed organized the entire time. We booked everything months in advance and upon arrival we had absolutely no worries that our requests would be met. Cypress Inn will definitely be the hotel I use to stay at whenever I visit Carmel by the sea. read more

Probably our most favorite spot to stay in Carmel. We have 2 doggos and one is a senior blind dog. The place is so accommodating for them. Not to mention their puppy hour and the fact that dogs are allowed practically everywhere. The hotel has its charm. The room looked clean and smelled clean. We stayed in the standard room #109, the restrooms were right across from our room. It was noisy, with people chatting right outside our door, not mention the slamming of the toilet seat If we stay here again, we are going to pay extra attention to the room location prior. Although, the noise is inevitable because the windows are very old. We could hear dishes, employees talking ect right outside our room. It was also hot at night time with no AC. I want to add that the employees are friendly and attentive. Parking is an issue. Any parking close to the hotel has a 2hr limit. Unless you park it in the residential area which is further down the street. We stayed two nights and often went to check on it, nothing happened to it. After all, it's Carmel I would have given it 5 stars if I would sleep well without all the noise. read more

This is more a place marker for me than an actual review. I didn't get enough time to spend here as I perused this tiny boutique hotel whilst waiting for friends to meet up. If there's nothing more to say though is this hotel is filled with personality. Formerly co-owned by Doris Day her exploits can be seen through many of the large movie posters she's starred in to her films being played on multiple televisions at the bar. There is a touch of that old Hollywood style in everything from the cushions to the wallpaper. The courtyard seemed small but a delightful place to hang around. The lobby/lounge also felt like a snap to a 1950s Hollywood set. I asked about the place to one of the bellman and he's the one that gave me some history of the place as I shared above. I only took a sneak peek at the rooms but it looked like it was made back in the earlier half of the 20th century. The rooms looked more like guest rooms you would find at the homes of the rich and the famous from that time era than the modern styling of most hotels. It is quaint but has personality which is what you look for from a boutique hotel. I don't have much to say aside from first impressions and a brief walk around but if you are in Carmel-by-the-Sea and want to enjoy the eclectic nature of this coastal town Cypress Inn might add to your vacation story more than take away. read more

They are everywhere. * Location (5/5): It's not on the beach, but it's still perfect. 1 block away from wonderful restaurants and shops on Ocean Ave, and about 6 short blocks walk to the beach. Because it's not on Ocean, it has less foot traffic. * The rooms (3.5/5): well, it's a tale of 2 rooms. The older feels 50+ years old (bathrooms, A/C...meh), but there's newer rooms made to resemble the same design, but better bathrooms and tub. I tried both, and prefer the new for sure. It also featured a ceiling fan, which was welcomed. Bed/bedding was fine. * Breakfast buffet (4/5): a few hot items (eggs, bacon or sausage, potatoes), assorted pastries, bagels, yogurt. The "pop overs" are like an oversized out-of-control roll in a muffin-liner, warm and semi-sweet...delicious with butter! * Terry's Lounge (n/a): didn't eat here, but everyone and every table for 3 days seemed to love it. Burger, fish, pasta, chicken, short ribs, steaks. Looked really good! * Service (4/5): Kind of quiet and reserved, but when you need them, they come thru. We had a couple of problems with our first room, and they offered to move us to another, which we accepted, for our last night. * Dog-Friendly (5/5): As mentioned, nearly every person has a dog here. So did we, and we had no issues. The rooms are spotless and have tiled floors, perfect for mishaps if they occur. * Parking (2/5): Street parking 8a-6p is for 2 hours. 1.5 blocks down, Eighth Street, is unmonitored all-day parking. In summary, I liked it...but not loved. If I had the pooch, I would absolutely stay here again. If not, I'd like to think there's other options. read more

He was kind and reasonable and it was such a relief to deal with someone who did the right thing, especially in our current climate. My daughters and I had hoped to get away with our two dogs for a cathartic Christmas vacation after my wife had passed away a few months earlier. Unfortunately, upon arriving at the Cypress Inn on Christmas Eve, we discovered that that section of Carmel had a power outage and the hotel had done nothing to prepare for that though the storm had been predicted weeks before. No electricity and no hot water. We were given two rooms with a dim battery-powered lantern and one of the rooms had no windows and no ventilation with the only light through slats in the door. Our dinner reservations then were cancelled and the staff could not help find anywhere else to eat. We ate leftovers in a dimly lit, cold room. The next day, Christmas Day, was just as bad. No electricity, no hot water, no help from the management. We ended up traveling to Monterey to find the only open restaurant on Christmas Day that accepted dogs: Bubba Gumps. The day after Christmas, still no power and no shower until late that evening. But too late for dinner there so we had to look elsewhere: Barmel which was fantastic. We checked out the next day and they had the audacity to charge us FULL PRICE for ruining our Christmas vacation with no hint or offer of retribution. Other reviews have mentioned that this once great little boutique hotel is now only in it for the money and that is so so true. Doris Day would weep if she knew how they've ruined her hotel. read more

I've been going to this iconic hotel for about 15 years. The bar tenders will go out of their way to make special drinks. One rainy winter night a cook went out of his way to accommodate a vegan. This is our second time staying at Cypress Inn. We stayed in a standard room last time and opted to stay in the King Deluxe this time. Each room is a bit different as it is a boutique hotel. We stayed in 112 with a private entrance, loved that. There was a jetted bathtub that we did not put to use because there were ants. I did tell the front desk when we checked in and they had someone go clean it up but unfortunately the ants came right back. The bed was cleaned when we checked in but all the decorative pillows were still on the ground. There was still food in the fridge from the last guests as well. I still gave it 4 stars because we LOVE how dog friendly it is, staff were kind, and the location is great. read more

I was excited to at long last stay at the CypressInn with my two Yorkies. It was pretty much downhill from there. First off, this hotel is way overpriced for the value delivered. The Inn is showing its age. Things are a bit tatty no matter where you look. Dinner at the restaurant barely earned the name of food, although breakfast was fine. We stayed in the Tower suite, which was super cool for us but probably not great for anyone older because of the two flights of stairs to the bedroom. Its such a dog friendly hotel which we absolutely love. It was a bit weird when the reservation desk guy told us we should have been charged $30 a night for our pup. Who is actually a service dog, but we didn't get a chance to explain this. Overall its such a special place. A must visit in Carmel! read more

Charming hotel right in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea, built in the 20's and once co-owned by Doris Day, easy walk to the beach, super dog friendly, nice complimentary breakfast spread, great shopping and restaurants nearby...BUT not sure I would stay there again. We stayed on the Tower Suite (room 220) it is a two story suite with the bedroom upstairs and living room and bathroom downstairs. While the weather was very nice and cool the bottom floor of our room was unbearably stuffy and hot. The did give us a portable AC (no central air) but it did little to keep the room cool, and it was extremely loud...which meant we had to turn up the TV, which then could be heard from the hall (because the TV was right next to the door). We felt bad about this so ended up turning it down and using closed captions instead. The bathroom was a good size with a skylight that provided great natural light, but it also seem to act like a magnifying glass, when the sun was out the bathroom was a good 10 degrees hotter than the already hot living room and it never cooled down. It was almost unbearable to get ready in there. The bedroom upstairs was nice, but small, it had windows on three walls and is the tallest point of the hotel. The bedroom temp was cool because you could open all of the windows and get a nice breeze, the only problem with that was that some of the windows were right over the outside area of the attached restaurant (Terry's) so noise from the kitchen and outside area started around 6am. You also have to navigate a winding, narrow staircase... so if you needed to go to the restroom in the middle of the night, it's not ideal, but in fairness they did warn of us the fact that there was no bathroom upstairs when we booked. We got to the hotel a bit earlier than the posted check-in time, but they said we only needed to wait 10 minutes until it was inspected after being cleaned and they would call my cell when it was ready. So we decided to sit in the car and wait to eat lunch until we could get into the room with our stuff and our pup. We ended up waiting over a hour, with no proactive updates from the front desk. No parking lot and no valet, so you have to park on the street and most spots right around the hotel are 2 hour parking...we had to park a few blocks away so that we weren't in a timed spot. They do have a loading zone right in front of the hotel so that you don't have to tote you luggage from blocks away. read more
