We have 3 kids currently attending VCS and will hopefully be adding our twins to the roster this year. Our children are thriving at Village; academically, emotionally, and spiritually. All of our kids love the campus and the teachers. The curriculum is challenging but the school is always finding new ways to make learning fun. VCS encourage family unity and there are many social events for families. We feel like VCS is our second home and we have made many friends there, friends that we actually like to hang out with outside of school. As a parent I am always worried if the curriculum isn't challenging enough so when other kids come to Village I ask the parents if their children find the work too easy or more challenging. I have yet to hear of one parent tell me it is easier than their previous school. The teachers and staff alike truly care about these kids and love God. It is evident the moment you set foot on campus. VCS promotes college at an early age and will guide your children through the entire process and hold their hand every step of the way. Mrs. Carly Matthews is probably the worst teacher at this school, we actually caught her giving ALL the students a grade (low B grade) and not looking at their work, she admitted to it and then later lied about it. But we do have PROOF on email. We knew Mrs. Matthews was bad news when at the parent back to school night she throws all the teachers under the bus by saying, "if your student doesn't enjoy History then they probably didn't have good teachers in the past". Village Christian School is mediocre. The teachers are better in public school. The tuition isn't worth it. From a parent of two children who attended VCS's Middle School. If you are seeking a dynamic and enriching environment for your children, I would dig a little deeper (i.e., beyond the veneer you'll see upon a first visit) before subjugating your child or children to the oppressive blandness that permeates Village Christian School. There is nothing overtly wrong or harmful in this community-starved environment or its personnel, but, in fact, that is the problem. The pedagogical methods and connectedness of VCS's community-less community are unlikely, from my experience, to catalyze your child to explore and embrace their life to its fullest. I realize that some parents may be seeking refuge from the overexposure inherent in urban environments, i.e., Los Angeles County. We were, too! But, the opposite of excessive and unguided exposure can have severe and long-standing impacts on a child when they finally arrive in adulthood and must contend with its complexities while continuing courageously on their life's path. As a parent and an adult, I firmly believe that part of a child's self-worth and resilience stems from learning to process and stay in flow with life in such a way that s/he can adapt, process, and learn from most any environment, condition, or behavior. An inability to fully develop these inner aptitudes creates, from my experience, a fait accompli into a world of fear-based reasoning and engagement. While VCS may provide a solid Elementary School environment, I believe the middle- and high-school environments do little to enrich the diversity and worldliness of a child's life. My family and I truly enjoyed every moment of being a part of the Village Family!Three of my four children attended village for several years and it was a very memorable experiences that helped my children grow spiritually and academically. Based on circumstances beyond our control we had to move, but if I had it my way all of my children would graduate from Village. The staff is always working to offer an exceptional educational experience for children of all ages with a not overly heavy push for secular focus. I was always impressed with the innovative teaching techniques and technology they incorporated to prepare children for the next level. The family environment of the teachers and staff are what made it so special to me compared to the other private schools around the area. The extracurricular options for students are everything you want for your children. My son experienced musical theater at what felt like a professional theatre level and my daughters both experienced theatre as well with amazing memories made. I'm am in 7nth grade now. I used to go here from 3rd grade to 5th grade. Every. Single. Second. Was. Hell. I got bullied everyday for what I wore and was told that my shoes were fake. It was so bad that one day I thought of killing myself. I have recovered, but please do not take your kids here. DONT make the mistake my parents did. The education is a fucking joke. I was in 5th grade when Covid happend, and by that time I turned atheist because on how bad the education is. I could go on for days on how bad it was. This school is extremely hypocritical and the first in line are the parents! They do not exemplify living Christ like. For example, at lacrosse games they are heckling the coach, yelling at their sons to hit opposing players! Year after year it's the same thing! I first attended this school back in 2012 when I was in kindergarten, now I am a sophomore in high school and I still suffer from the psychological trauma I experienced here. The principal at the time was Mr. Vegas, a super kind man who I wish had stayed there as long as I did, and under his supervision the tuition was affordable for a wide selection of families. Unfortunately over time, the school became more expensive and extremely political in their teaching. Some examples include when the Bible teachers openly gave controversial opinions on situations in the Middle East such as the rivalry between Israel and Palestine in which they demonized the Palestinians and generalized them as if they were all a part of hamas (a terrorist group). Another example is when none of the teachers even bothered to discuss both times Trump got impeached in class even though they were major events in American history. No matter if you agreed with them or not they still should have at least been mentioned so that the students could be informed. We were basically sheltered from the outside world all because of the ideological beliefs the administration had. Only until I left the school and attended public school was I finally exposed to more balanced and less secluded thinking. Besides these issues with the school, my elementary experience was relatively fine though I didn't have many friends because I was extremely nervous and at that time the school did not take to action and create sufficient bonds for the students. Transitioning into middle school was like being hit by a sledge hammer. All of the sudden, the students pumped full of hormones from puberty were obnoxiously rude and continuously bragged about how rich they were since tuition kept being raised. People who were in the average middle-class like me were becoming more and more rare throughout the school and when there used to be Toyota minivans dropping off kids there were now Lexus's and Porsche's. My teachers in middle school were kind as always, and as soon as I left the classroom there would always be some situation in which I would be mocked (for me it was because I was short). One memory I will never forget was when at school the students always told each other not to tell their parents or school faculty about how they were feeling since it made them look "weak." If I had known better then I would have had an infinitely better middle school experience since there were times when I was both physically and emotionally hurt and did not tell anyone. I'm still frustrated to this day that I made such an obvious mistake. Who cares about what others think of you, as long as you feel secure then that's all that matters. My parents later pulled me out of the school in 7'th grade not because of how I was feeling, I never told them, but because of the covid lockdown and the rising tuition that was getting out of control. I didn't write this review to just persuade anyone not to attend this school because I had a bad experience, not everyone does. In reality, it's simply to spread awareness for the changing landscape that the school has and still is going through and to hopefully prevent any students from making the same mistakes I did. read more

As a parent of a 6th grade boy, I thought a private Christian school would have nice kids. But the middle school kids are terribly unwelcoming and mean spirited, bullies. I have tried to get help from the administration but they are powerless to make any changes. My daughter tried middle school here and also found private school kids at this K-12 school to be quite Un-Christian and unruly and not the least bit interested in getting a good education. Sorry to say, but public school looks a lot more serious minded with sweeter children. Beware of labels. We're a new family at Village and started in the middle of Covid, so It's been an interesting transition. While, it's been a little more difficult getting to know the staff and families, they still do a great job of reaching out and making you feel welcome. The campus is beautiful and they have lots of wonderful perks such as multiple theaters (with lots of opportunities to get involved in productions at all levels), dance, music, engineering, science lab, art and incredible sports programs. I've been very impressed, so far, with both of my kid's progress academically and have noticed a difference in how they engage with adults and their peers. They are much more willing to engage in thoughtful conversations and share things that they're learning - which I love! Village is great at balancing academics with social/emotional and moral development. The leadership is fantastic and very accessible. They truly listen and care about families concerns and do a great job at responding to them. The student body is very diverse and come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, political values, and even different faiths (although most are Christian), which we really appreciate because the kids learn that there are many different types of people out there but we are all created and loved equally by God. Just like all schools, there are a handful of kids who struggle with behavior issues, but most of the kids we've encountered are kind and respectful. Overall, our kids are thriving and happy, so we're happy. Hopefully Village will continue to grow in it's excellent "whole child" approach to education. This place is hell on earth, a hotbed of racial and gender profiling, brainwashing in the name of Christian values, and the kind of school one would expect from a tiny religious town in a flyover state - NOT here in Los Angeles. What Village Christian is, is inexpensive. It is one of the cheapest high school around. I'll give you that. (That is the only reason why I attended this school.) I know someone who got EXPELLED from here for being gay. I know someone who wore black nail polish to school and had it FORCIBLY removed by the principal with paint thinner. To send your child to the elementary school here, you have to sign a waiver that allows their staff to beat your child with a paddleboard with holes in it. I had a teacher (Bible class, senior year) try to convince our class that hugging should be reserved for marriage. I went here from 4th grade until I graduated. I am not lying. If I had a dollar for every time I got called up here and hassled, and asked if I was "trying to get kicked out," I could buy myself a nice house in in Beverly fucking Hills. In actuality, the reason I consistently failed so many of my classes here was because I was suffering from a learning disability that made it impossible for me to retain any information I read. A little guidance in a correct direction could have changed my life and the way I look at school, but instead the staff at Village opted to hassle me and put me on their stupid track - classes all taught by sports coaches who had no teaching credentials and were too busy with their coaching duties to teach the real classes they, for some reason, had signed on for. I literally had a teacher show us 20 minutes of a movie instead of having us read the book when we studied Beowulf my senior year, and similar happened when we were supposed to have read The Grapes of Wrath in 11th grade (we read the first chapter and watched a movie.) In seventh grade, my 'music appreciation' teacher taught us for a couple weeks, and then for the rest of the semester, he would sit in his office and talk on the phone. It was basically a study hall. Lucky for us, he did not come back. Unfortunately, many of the worst teachers stay here for years. The daily discrimination I felt going to this school full of pious, cold, phony religious bigotry left some serious scars. I conld continue telling horror stories about the place, but if I did, I'd have to separate them all out into chapters! I arrived at junior college horribly underprepared afterward, and even had to take numerous remedial classes in attempt to get me up to college speed. As an adult, I find appalling gaps in my knowledge of American History from having been taught with such a fiercely biased perspective. If you are struggling to find an inexpensive education for your child, I strongly encourage you to look elsewhere. The judgmental attitude from the staff and lousy teachers made this a horrible place to get my education. Our daughter felt confortable and secure throughout the year. She really enjoyed her kindergarten experience. I have attended here from 2nd grade until 12th grade (graduating soon), and I must say I can't remember any of those things the others claimed about indoctrination or bullying or insane extremist views. Perhaps I'm just a rare case, but in my time here I've been able to discuss philosophy and theology from a secular and theological point of view with faculty and staff, as well as students. I haven't heard of or seen any bullying problems (it probably exists, as it does everywhere, but if I'm not hearing about it - and I know almost everyone at the school - it is probably very isolated. Still a problem, if it does exist, however). I don't know of anyone who has been expelled for atheism or homosexuality (in fact I know a student in the graduating class last year - as far as I am aware - was a homosexual. Good for him, more power to ya I say). I don't recall any "Darwin is a liar" t-shirts or any "fire and brimstone" chapels threatening us with eternal damnation. Obviously, though, a Christian school will teach Christian teachings (including the concept of heaven and hell) so if you are already inclined to not believe this, don't blame the school for teaching the curriculum they set out to teach in their mission statement. Go somewhere else if that's your beef; you'd probably have a better time, too! :) The science department has expanded as of late, and teachers like Mr. Klein are willing to discuss just about any aspect of modern science. Evolution is taught as course material, just as in any other school (if you are of the assumption that Christiany and evolution are mutually exclusive, you need to: 1. get your head checked out 2. talk to Mr. Klein on the subject). Admittedly some of the classes are a little light (the bible classes are a lot of fluff in most cases - actual philosophy or psychology classes would be more interesting, in my opinion.) and there are classes where students might be watching videos and things like that instead of hard coursework - but on the flipside there are quite a few AP class options nowadays (sadly no AP Music theory anymore - I really wished I could have taken that). I am not a middle schooler now, but I have noticed they have been increasing the quality of the middle school programs. I suppose you could discuss it with the teachers/staff if that pertains to you. Perhaps a few years ago when those scathing reviews were written this school was a different place. In recent years, however, I have had little to no problems with the school. In fact, I can appreciate the fact that the teachers/faculty are very helpful and friendly with the students - if I was around their age I'd consider some of them good friends. The teachers are willing to discuss theology/philosophy/christiany/atheism/god/etc with any student, as far as I have seen, and not in the kind of "i'm-going-to-convert-you" way that you might expect - more of just listening and discussion. Also, the sports department has expanded - there is a nice sport court out back, the football team has been headed up by an ex-NFL player, and our teams are expanding and doing well. The fine arts department also got a brand new building attached to the back of the gym, which has been very awesome for the band/strings/theater classes. The theater department has also been improving drastically - I remember as an 8th grader watching the school musicals; they were alright, but they felt like a high school musical (you know what I mean). In recent times, the plays have had immense set design budgets and fantastic production values, with a professional director and stage designer working for the theater department. Our production of Godspell (which I was guitarist in) was phenomenal - full lighting, sound, everything. Everyone thought it was amazing! If you were skeptical of the quality of the productions previously (understandable) you should really check out one of the DVDs of the recent ones (when Thom Babbes started directing) or check out a showing. Definitely a good fine arts school. I'm giving 4 stars out of 5 because there will always be flaws at any complex institution like this. Personally, I find the prices in the cafeteria a little exorbitant (actually, a lot exorbitant) for what you're getting. Additionally, there could be a few more interesting classes offered (AP Music theory, for example!!!). Overall a good school to send a kid to if you want them to be educated in a christian environment, but without having Christianity "shoved down their throat" (if they absolutely despise everything Christian, though, perhaps this is not the place for them). However, being a private school, pricing is something to think about. If it's within your budget and fits your needs, I'd recommend it. read more

Beat by a principal at age 6 aka "CORPORAL PUNISHMENT": I personally attended Village Christian School in Sun Valley, CA. At the age of 6 (Emmi's age), I was sent to Mrs Walton's office, the principal solely because there was ONE assignment I missed that was lost in the abyss of my desk & I was labeled a "LIAR". I was sent to her office where she proceeded to BEAT ME WITH A "WOODEN PADDLE". I was so scared, I was crying my little heart out and this evil bitch proceeded to DEMAND I pull my pants down (while we're alone in her office) and swatted me so hard TWICE with a wooden paddle. This experience has always negatively affected me, but with Emmi turning 6 this year, all these crazy, unresolved issues continue to come to light. My son is thriving academically, loves his friends and teachers. The administration goes above and beyond, leaving cupcakes on our doorstep when he was accepted. I absolutely love this school. My son just finished his first year in kindergarten. His teacher Mrs Donnelley was incredible. I see him thrive, learn about the Bible, and read and write! We wanted to move to the beach but this school is so amazing I can't leave it. It's the only thing keeping me in Burbank. The extra drive is worth it. Everything. The quality of people attending the school is second to none. The assemblies we attend r adorable and we never leave without shedding a tear haha! Just precious. The meals r balanced. I used to think it was great here but year after year have experienced poor administration and teaching staff. Much of the staff are related to each other so if you have a problem with one or complain about one there will be repercussions in other classes or administratively. This creates a year to year problem, as some staff are teachers in a lower grade or coaches and your student will have their spouse in a year or two with many preconceived notions. When I read the negative reviews I heard one thing going on. Sour Grapes over a parent not getting what they wanted for the checks they were writing. Just because you pay for the education does not give you the right to force your beliefs on others. Everyone at the school pays to attend. Now then, my wife and I have nothing but praise for Village. The campus is beautiful. The Administration is accessible and does not dodge parents if parents want to talk. The education is outstanding, just take a look at the list of universities that seniors will be attending. We have been Village parents for over 6 years for 2 children. We love it. We recommend the school to people we know with school age children. The Fine Arts/Drama program is world class. The sports programs are outstanding and compete on a high level. The safety on the campus is outstanding. For anyone that claims Village is in a bad area is wrong. It is located in a residential neighborhood that buffers it from businesses nearby. VCS HIGH SCHOOL REVIEW. I had my son attending VCS only for 1 year. He transferred to VCS to play basketball for his senior year after being heavily recruited by basketball head coach for VCS, Coach Jon Shaw, by heavily I mean conversations and texts several times per week for few months. The school seem decent and, as the basketball was priority in his life, the decision to transfer was made. That decision was a very tough one, he had to leave behind many of his friends he's been with for 10 years, his favorite teaches, his favorite subjects like film making and production that were not offered in VCS. He also had to drive 1 hour each way to get to VCS and another hour each way to his private coach twice a week. Hard choice? But his life was basketball - and he was very good at it. Played for top EYBL club team, England National Team (he has dual citizenship), already had offers from couple colleges... So he made a choice and made a move to new school at the senior year. And, oh boy, as a family we made what became was the worst decision up to date. I will never stop regretting it. It was disastrous year, the coach was mean, nasty and psychologically abusive - on the grand scale! Also overwhelming cronyism was a very profound trend, even obvious to outsiders. Coach Shaw would lose vast majority of the games substituting the great players that were "on the roll" for his personal cronies friend's sons, even if there was no hard work put out from them. So he never let other talent shine. It was clear to observers that coach Jon Shaw just didn't want several good players to do well, to find the rhythm, to score a lot, he would rather sacrifice the game than let it happen!!! I have many games taped to show it in the most obvious way. Several players left the team in the middle of the season. My son had to stick around - as a senior he had no choice of switching schools at that point. As parents we were helpless to do anything and went twice to administration to report abusive remarks and tendencies of coach Jon Shaw towards the players and even some parents. Sadly, nothing happen in time and coach Shaw was forced to resign at the end of the season, but it was too late for my son and few others. Every single player that remained on that team left the school at the end of the season, I never heard anything like tis happening in any other school. We never discussed but the reasons obvious to me. This coach, in christian school, supposed to be a mentor, a friend a guide to young athletes - instead his agenda was destroying the confidence in those young teenage athletes, taking away their dignity, camaraderie and the fun and thrill of the game. There was no character build up - only well targeted verbal abuse taking them apart piece by piece until broken. They were taking out of the games repeatedly as soon as they did well and, as a result, the game was taken out of them... In the year book my son who arguably was 1 of 3 top players wasn't even mention in the basketball section. That was just as degrading for him as was this whole school year. I understand that one person like coach Shaw doesn't represent the whole school, but its school's responsibility that this kind of situation never happens, BECAUSE YOUNG LIVES GET DESTROYED -AND THE SCHOOL IS RESPONSIBLE. VHS - this is happening under your roof and on your watch... To the families that entrusted their kids to you to make the best they could be out of them. Also BULLING is a big issue in this school that administration fails to address. My son is a very well built athlete, so he was not a subject of direct bulling, but there was "behind the scenes" stuff and numerous nails in his car tiers, that cost us 11 visits to tire shop this school year. And for those that may think I am angry, bitter and twisted parent - do yourself a favor and verify these facts: 1.Coach Shaw was fired from the school, despite the fact that he has few more years on the contract with VCS, 2 children studying there as well as his wife being high school assistant principal. 2. Every single player on that 2016/2017 season from every grade left Village Christin School. Not just the team - the school. 3. Much of these negative reviews seem to come from students who attended many years ago. I can vouch that this is a great school nowadays. The administration was entirely overhauled in 2010 and the new leaders of the school are extremely intelligent and thoughtful leaders. Head of school is a Harvard alum. Yes, this is a Christian school, and as such, your children will take Bible class...and the administration is unapologetic about their faith. However, I can tell you from experience that different viewpoints are not shunned at this school - and thoughtful discussion is encouraged. For instance, my daughter once made a presentation about why she believes gay marriage should be legal. Do I think this is a minority view at the school? Absolutely. Was she punished for it? Absolutely not. In fact, she got an A. Also, the theatre department is amazing. Each year, they do multiple shows in the "black box theater" that focus on "finding biblical truths in secular works." These shows are edgy and excellent. In terms of other academic credentials, contrary to other reviews, "gaps" are not left out In science class. Plenty of AP classes are taught, and the curriculum is very strong, a view that is validated by the tremendous diversity of universities that graduates attend....including Stanford, Cal Tech, Ivy league, etc. The school also has a "Concentrations" program modeled after Harvard where students get to focus on a specific discipline as they prepare for college. Do not send your child here under any circumstances. This school used to be a quaint, affordable private school. The combination of bullying and an incompetent administration has made this school unbearable. The needs of the children are put behind the ego of the headmaster. We learned after leaving this school how bad the curriculum is as our daughter was a straight A student at Village Christian and had to struggle when she transferred to public school to maintain her GPA. read more

If you talk to students, parents, and teachers who have seen this school change since its administration overhaul in 2010, they will tell you how much VCS has changed for the better. I'm horrified to hear of other former students' terrible experiences, but that doesn't at all sound like the VCS I know today. The concentrations program (designed to guide students toward personalized curriculum based on their strengths and interests) prepares students to begin thinking about their future college majors and careers beginning in 9th grade. The arts and athletics programs are fantastic. Many AP classes and top of the line science classes with brand new labs. And in regards to Christian indoctrination- Village does not discriminate against students of any or no faith and the Bible classes have become much less "fluffy" and are now a place where students engage in academic inquiry of sacred text and theology. Even in bible classes students are encouraged to ask tough questions, listen to alternate points of view, and IF they are Christians- to develop an authentic faith. Yes, it's a Christian school, but it's open to all and nothing is forced on anyone. There is also a fantastic program for international students (mostly from China, South Korea, and areas of Africa). Step onto campus and you will immediately notice the diversity of the student body- ethnic, religious, and socio-economic. Compared to other private schools, this really makes VCS stand out. My daughter was in elementary school last year at Village and we absolutely loved it. The class size is small, the teachers are extremely loving, and they go above and beyond any teachers we've ever experienced before. In elementary school they take keyboarding classes, Spanish classes and art classes - just to name a few. This year (because of financial reasons) we had to put her in public school. She is an entire GRADE LEVEL ahead of her new classmates. We're going back to Village as soon as possible . . . read more

Wow. I have a child at Village who is in the Middle School now and has been attending Village since Pre-Kindergarten. The two comments below were clearly written by those who had not had much experience with Village and are laughable and untrue. The school is a great place for those whose goal is to obtain excellent education without the distractions and other problems associated with public schools. The fact that most of the graduates go on to prestigious collages speaks for itself. Great school. (And no, no one asked me to sign a corporal punishment waiver.) read more

My children have been going to this school since Kindy. My eldest is about to enter high school. We absolutely adore this school. Both have scored exceedingly well on the standardized tests (Stanford Achievement) given to students nationwide. One ranked in the 99th percentile (as high as you can score) in English and Science both in elementary and middle school. I don't agree with the negative comments left here by others. My eldest plans on going to MIT. She starts college planning at VCS soon, before she even enters high school. Truly excellent school. read more

My son started at Village Christian this year and is in the Velocity program which is designed for children who've successfully finished 8th grade but want more time to prepare for high school (young for their grade, athletes etc). I am beyond pleased with the program and the school thus far. We are not a religious family and I was concerned about my son feeling ostracized or being overwhelmed with dogma (we are extremely liberal ideologically). I'm thrilled to report that my son is flourishing and has only benefited from his exposure to bible scripture and discussions about their interpretations. Not only has he been able to be honest about his own beliefs, I feel that his teachers truly know him, academically and emotionally, his strengths and weaknesses. We're only one quarter in, so I look forward to seeing my son progress. The culture of the school, in general, has been drama free and he has made many friends. I'm a hard parent to please and I felt compelled to write this review because Village Christian has earned my accolades already. Choosing a school is obviously one of the most consequential choices a parent can make. I'm truly grateful to be able to say we've made the right one. read more
