A Chromatic Feast: The Warm Embrace of Sagra in La Crosse…read more To dine at Sagra in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is to be reminded that genuine culinary warmth can be found far from the traditional epicenters of Italian gastronomy. Guided by an exceptionally attentive and gracious staff, the experience unfolds with a well-paced rhythm that immediately puts the diner at ease. It is an establishment that clearly understands the intersection of great service and great food. The meal begins with a study in subtle elevation: olives presented with a gentle, deliberate warming. It is a small but vital touch that awakens their natural oils and briny depth, setting a welcoming tone for the table. The meatballs follow suit, boasting a robust, comforting heft. They are deeply hearty and undeniably tasty, anchored by a rustic authenticity that demands a proper piece of bread to chase the remaining sauce. However, the quiet star of the evening was a sweet potato dish that essentially stole the stage. It was a vibrant, chromatic triumph--an absolute masterclass in both visual palette and culinary palate. The kitchen managed to coax an astonishing spectrum of colorful flavors from the root vegetable, elevating a humble ingredient into something genuinely amazing. "Life is a combination of magic and pasta." -- Federico Fellini The pasta course, often the crucible by which an Italian kitchen is judged, was a remarkably pleasant affair. While it may not have possessed the sheer, surprising theater of the sweet potatoes, it remained a fundamentally nice, deeply satisfying plate of food that grounded the meal in tradition. Ultimately, Sagra delivers an unequivocally great dining experience. It is a restaurant that balances hearty comfort with vibrant execution, proving that a well-crafted Italian menu in the heart of Wisconsin is a journey well worth taking. Schindoggies, small place with a big heart. Bangor, WI…read more Let me start out by saying this town of Bangor is filled with kindness. A child entered after a couple people had placed their order and had an order of a couple different things, the last of which was a float. The total was a wea bit more than the five dollars she had brought but Michael (the owner) said do not worry about it, and someone else stepped in as well to offer to pay for the difference. That kindness made the 20-minute trip worth it alone. More than one person willing to pitch in for this little lady that is a good community. I am pretty sure she was a regular too as she was familiar with the menu and ordered confidently, impressive in itself from someone her age. It was very refreshing to see such kindness. Now onto the food, I like to ask whom ever is working at the time their favorite thing is, Michael responded with "The Champ" so I ordered that and buffalo chicken nachos and a large soft pretzel. I ordered this to go as I was bringing the meal back home to share with mine. This saint of a man puts the hot and wet goods of the nachos in a separate container to maintain proper crunch integrity of the chips. I can't tell you how important the crunch is in a take out order, and apparently Schindoggies knows this. The pretzel- This was a classic feel of soft welcoming center and a toothsome exterior encrusted in big salt. It took me back to the days when I would watch a sporting event live and get one, except better. They took a classic and elevated it to its rightful place of greatness and gave it the respect it deserves. This is served with warm nacho cheese which is great alone but if you get the buffalo nachos you can dip it in that for some thing that bites back in a flirty delicious way. The buffalo chicken nachos- First want to reiterate the importance of crunch integrity in things that are fried or to go. Schindoggies nailed it with keeping separate the wet and dry and for that alone I thank them. The flavors were classic with a spicy tart buffalo sauce with tender shredded chicken mixed with soft welcoming nacho that blends well. This topped on the tortilla chips with a nice layer of shredded cheddar and jalapeños sour cream and salsa with a kick really bring the whole thing into a fun balance of; texture of soft and crunch, and flavor of the nice fattiness of the chicken/ cheese and the acid of the jalapeños to cut through and lift it to the next level. The Champ- alright so firstly I am going to say the ingredients which should tell you all you need to hear. Three pieces of Texas toast, Mac and cheese, bacon. My initial expectations were this thing would not have the structural integrity to fall about the place in a mass of tasty goodness on to my plate. I fully planned on using it as chip dip. This guy must have been a structural engineer in his last life because the lattice work of bacon and the proper amount of mac led to an incredibly solid thing of beauty. I purposely took some off to dip a chip because what American in their right mind wouldn't? Overall, the place seems to keep family in mind and brought back the nostalgia of ball park goodness with an affordable price and a taste that kicks the crap out of any other park food. I will be back to try the bacon wrapped hotdog because I'm freaky and that sounds like the type of Frankenstein, I want to give me life! Thanks, Schindoggies for the good food, and the kindness you bring to the table. I wish you nothing but success and happiness.
