I feel weird writing a review, as I took one class here (millinery), and they do so much. You can…read moremake brooms, felt a custom pair of slippers, do blacksmithing, even make a longbow. (Or you can do more typical crafty things like ceramics, or learn to use your sewing machine.) They're part of the county park district, and the breadth of classes they offer is amazing. Prices are reasonable and supplies are included. The mission (from their website) is: "The Michigan Folk School is committed to creating a community engaged in authentic, hands-on experiences through the teaching and sharing of traditional folk arts, crafts, music, and skills in an inspiring natural setting and to promote the preservation of forest and farmland." They do, and how. Anyway, I crossed two state lines to take a one-day millinery class (hatmaking), offered a couple of times a year either as two evenings or a full day. There aren't a lot of places that teach millinery, and while it was more basic than a class I took elsewhere, that other location has moved to Kentucky, and beggars can't be choosers. If I hadn't taken that other class I wouldn't have known about some things that were simplified (we didn't apply sizing; the brim edges weren't stitched; barbed elastic cord wasn't available; I don't think we curved the petersham ribbon for the sweatbands; no one made a hat with a separate brim and crown...). Everyone, including me, left with a felt hat we'd made ourselves that we were happy with, including people who knew zilch about hatmaking when they came in. Teacher was very helpful, sending out suggestions ahead of time and instructions on how to measure our heads in additon to asking what color and type of hat we wanted to make so she could bring it. She provided a good introduction, an idea book, and had enough tools to keep us all productive and happy, and was super patient. Bringing your own sewing supplies is helpful but not required - I was happy to have a couple of needles, a needle threader and scissors just so I didn't have to wait for them. There's time for lunch while your hat dries (they're formed with steam); honestly, the two-evening class is probably a better option if you're local. Nice selection of hat blocks; do some research and do some thinking ahead of time. You may want to bring your own trim if you have something specific in mind (feathers? a particular type of ribbon or floral trim?), since the teacher brought some but the stock isn't deep and is brought in special. I made a pillbox hat and if I were doing this again, I would have asked about elastic or googled "barbed elastic cord for hats" and spent $5 on some before coming. The teacher suggested I braid thin elastics which works but having taken the other class I know "there's an app for that" and wish I'd planned ahead. The directions about where to go onsite which they provided ahead of time were helpful, but do allow extra time to get here if you haven't been before; it's outside of town, located on a farm.

AR Workshop is a DIY shop where you can sign up to do pre-determined crafts throughout the week and weekends. Examples include cake stands, signs, tote bags, and clocks. The inside is adorably decorated with a modern rustic theme. There are large tables where you and your group can sit at to work on your crafts together inside. You can also book a private event in advance through their website which is pretty easy to navigate. There is ample parking space which is always a plus. I came for their grand opening with a friend. This event was well-planned and so much fun! They had teal decorations and balloons everywhere and were well-stocked with alcoholic drinks, water bottles with their logo, sparkling juice, a charcuterie platter, shrimp with cocktail sauce, and burritos. Guests were able to make a simple craft which were small wooden boards with various stains and cute phrases stenciled on top you could choose to paint with a variety of shades and colored glitter. They even had a cute photobooth 'van' outside, live music, and raffles throughout the evening. Seriously well-planned, my friend and I had a great time. This would be a great place for showers, bachelorette parties, birthdays, and special celebrations. I'm excited to come here for another event in the future!

One person in our group actually had an employee tear off her stencil before she was finished so she didn't even get to take her work home since they had to "fix it" for her. And if you step away from your project for more than a second, the employees take the liberty of doing whatever they want with it. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place if you expect your work to be "yours." They take it upon themselves to do whatever they choose to your project. I actually left without them even putting the legs on my stand because they split one of my friends projects by nailing where they shouldn't have. They ruined the whole look. I recommend going elsewhere or ordering your own design from Etsy.

The owner, Kim, was there during our visit and was happy to answer any questions we had. This was my first time in a bead store, so if it's your first time too, here are a couple of things that are good to know: Everything is sorted by style and size. I made the mistake of getting two different colors of beads made from the same material but in slightly different sizes. Oops! The strands of beads are all on clips. Each strand is separate. You can either take the entire clip up to the register or remove just the strand you want. If something doesn't have a price, Kim will check it for you if she doesn't already know it. She really knows her inventory, though, so don't worry! I would recommend having at least a general idea of what you're looking for because it would be very easy to get overwhelmed by all the options. Even though the store seems small, there is SO much to look at! Take your time, relax, and enjoy browsing. I had such a fun time and will definitely be back!

I arrived there with my friend a few minutes before 6:00 to find the store dark, closed and locked. There were no cars in the parking lot near the strip mall The Painted Glass is located. I paid $74.80 for this class and I have tried to contact the venue and have contacted Eventbrite for a refund. This is the lowest form of business; taking money from the customer, not being present at the scheduled time and avoiding refunding the ticket price paid. Attached is a photo of the venue at the time and date of the scheduled event. I have rated this one star but I think no stars or negative stars is more appropriate.

I saw a deal for The Painted Glass and decided that it was a unique concept to try. I however left…read morepretty disappointed and took a lost on another voucher I had bought. It had some good points: -Not too many other local places offer wine glass painting. -Basic instructions were given. However, the bad outweighed the good. You receive 1 glass for the $35 you would normally pay. They don't do a schedule of what you are actually painting when you register (unlike painting business that allow you to select what you are going to paint). The glass painting is decided by the largest group in attendance. It made for a horrible pick when I went. I skipped what the instructor was doing and did what I wanted to on my glass. I did not mention that it is a tiny seating area and no real assigned seats. They do tables, but it was a mess. Assigned seating would have worked better as people put down purses to hold seats. Lastly, they don't put the paint out in advance. It took about 15 minutes for everyone to past the paint to put on your place. When asked about it, she said the paint would dry up. I have never had that problem with the same acrylic paint at PWAT. Overall, it's a nice idea and they will have the market because there is no competition in the area. I will NOT go back (no music, cramped space, and unorganized) and it's not worth $35. I'd rather paint a glass at home or attend a painting on canvas event (much better organized and spacious). It was not organized well enough and I don't like that you can't chose what you want to paint.
