There has been a lot of turnover, the cleanliness of the place was not up to par. Laundry was an issue, as well as the food! All of the staff we loved quit and several residents moved. We hung in there because my mom likes it there and every place has issues. True, some more than others but what is different about Homestead is they were aware of the many issues and trying to fix them. Recently, we got a new LOCAL Regional Vice President. And she is very experienced and involved. We have formed a family council and she has been at our meetings. Which is not the case with other facilities. I have to also say that she has gotten more done than anyone has in the last few years! It is wonderful. She has brought back several wonderful past employees. And has hired a new chef. They are working on the menu to include several items to choose from. Fresh soup of the day, not canned! A waffle station as well as an omelet station. And in the spring, renovations should begin to bring the facility up to date. We are finally moving in the right direction! I certainly would not rule this place out for your loved one. The one thing I can give 5 stars to, is the activities director!! Wow, is she wonderful. The facility has a new van and they go on several outings, lunch bunch and more. Lots of activities! I still believe that Homestead will be the best it ever has been and there will be a waiting list to get in.

Park Meadows is close to his house...fast forward...she is 92 years old now ...in hospice and facing her last days... Her friends she made visit her daily in her apartment because she doe not go down to meals anymore.... I cannot say enough nice things about the staff, environment and culture of this caring community. From the minute you walk into Park Meadows, you are greeted by warm , friendly people at the front desk...As I walk to her apartment, residents are calm, content, very at home. Her nurses are competent, caring, professional and always welcoming as they greet me. Her care has always been above and beyond. I am sure they go way past their job descriptions to bring comfort to the residents....who could ask for more? Our family feels so lucky that we chose Park Meadows and are forever grateful

He eventually moved to Parks Meadow in January of 2023; however, it was recommended that he reserve his unit by paying the December 2022 rent. Unfortunately, soon after his move he became ill, hospitalized and passed away in mid-February, 2023. His stay at Park Meadows was only 3 1/2 weeks (late January to mid-February). The family paid March rent as we needed time to remove his belongings from the unit. In all, we paid 4 month's rent for his short stay. Another part of his "singing" up for Park Meadows was a "one time non-refundable" Community Fee - in this case $10,000 listed on page 40 of a 52-page lease agreement. It was explained that the Community Fee would lower his rent over his stay at Park Meadows. The family requested that Park Meadows refund at least part of the Community Fee. as his unit was only used a short time and he did not get a chance to use dining or any other facility amenities. Obviously, the family is very disappointed, and surprised, on the position Park Meadows is taking. Although there is no legal recourse, we find it unethical for Park Meadows to keep all of the "Community Fee" as his residence was so short in time. In speaking to the business officer at the facility, she could only say "it's out of my hands" and "I completely understand". In the end, it feels like a 92 year old man was taken advantage of with a very long and detailed lease agreement and an insensitive corporate entity.

The nurses, therapists, and doctors on staff were thorough, professional, compassionate, and encouraging. They took the time to get to know her, and encouraged her in a safe and realistic way. She emerged after one month, competent and confident, and ready to return to independent living. In addition, the facility provided excellent activities and self care services like happy hour, football game viewing parties, and a hair salon, making her time there not just productive but also enjoyable. Finally, the administrative and support staff provided me with the information I needed with regard to finances and continuing care upon discharge from the facility. Overall, I would give Brookdale Overland Park a double thumbs up. We loved everything about it!

But my sister and i are always wondering if there is a better place with more efficient care somewhere else. For the money we pay for both my parents to live there it seems there could be a better, more caring and compassionate facility that are on top of things where we can feel at peace and know my parents are well taken care of. We have found them in dirty clothes or urine smelling clothes or wet from not being taken to the bathroom. This is the floor that is suppose to have MORE help more frequently than the assisted living floor and it seems that the caregivers are all too busy to keep up with the residents they have. The head nurse for this floor has been caring and seemed to care whenever we had a problem or complaint but I don't think she can keep up with all that is going on there. My parents room is frequently dirty and they lose my moms hearing aids now and then. They don't have either parent ready when we need to pick them up for dr. Appts after we warn them the day before of what is needed. The list goes on. Some of the caregivers have called us to ask what to do when they have a problem. We were hoping that once my parents were in a care home that the caregivers there would take over and we would never have to worry about all the little things but that is not the case with Sunrise of Leawood. My parents are still there but we are questioning our choice and may have to make a drastic change if this continues to go on which I'm thinking it probably will since we've already had a few meetings with them and nothing has changed. My suggestion is to really check out all floors at these facilities and talk to the residents who live there and can still communicate well or talk to their relatives that visit. It's the only way you'll really know what goes on in these places. Update! Tonight 2/22/18 my father is in the hospital. Sunrise's lack of care has lead to this. No follow through and no one to take things as seriously as they should & just plain negligence when it comes to the elderly there. My dad also smelled like urine when he arrived at the hospital. Not happy. Seriously thinking of needing to get my parents OUT OF SUNRISE.
