The final issue of the Village Voice.
    Alden C.

Living in Middle America and the West Coast grabbing a copy of the Village Voice was not an easy thing to do. If you could manage to get a subscription that would really only guarantee consistent issues of the New York free rag newspaper that came out once a week. Oh, I have encountered it and grabbed a copy of it when I was in New York years ago because even in the section of the country I'm in most people have at least heard of the Village Voice... and the free rags that were local were just diminished imitations of it in many cases. Those that were even somewhat in the know also knew that Village Voice was not so much an American newspaper magazine but a New York one. The Village Voice started in 1955 and has been around for 63 years until it's parent company, Voice Media Group announced that on August 22, 2017 that would cease. The final issue of Village Voice was distributed on September 21, 2017. Village Voice is somewhat a product of it's time before the internet took over our lives and was probably at it's best in the 60's to the 80's along with many other free weekly rags that were distributed throughout the country. While the final issue of the Village Voice wasn't any easier to get out on the West Coast I did manage to score a copy of one on Ebay where it certainly wasn't free and showed a picture of Bob Dylan in 1965 as the cover photo. Most of the copies weren't that expensive but some collectors were already asking $50 on some listings. Like all of the free rags the articles with some sense of activism it involves situations, developments and issues that involve the local community, concert listings and film reviews. The final issue had a great commemorative section of the long time contributing staff that worked on the newspaper which was very informative and interesting in the publication's history. I no longer have my very first issue of The Village Voice that I snatched up. Something in the back of my mind told me that it was something that would never really end or go away but now that the newspaper is now defunct I will look at the final issue with appreciation and perhaps a tiny bit of awe.

In an effort to generate incremental revenue many of the sites I frequent (NY Post, DailyMail, MLB…read moreTrade Rumors) have installed partial paywalls to sequester their best content/columnists behind a paid, members-only rope line. I get it. Quality contents costs money... meaning the days of "everything is free on the net" are coming to a resounding close. The problem is that while I frequent those sites for their entertainment value, I'm hard pressed to rationalize an extra $30 bucks a month for content that doesn't have the immediacy and credibility of those sources that I pay for willingly such as the NYT, WSJ and The Economist to name a few. It's probably fair to say that their paywall gambit counts on their advertising continuing to be placed by AdTech "bots" rather that human buyers who might consider more subjective reader engagement metrics such as overall quality of the environments and a more robust match with client objectives. Again, even though I enjoy their entertainment value, it's amazing what you can learn to live without. After a month, I barely remember that they exist. Five stars for amnesia.

The bias reeks of desperation and lack of actual factual reporting. Pretty much on par with the National Enquirer. It does have a decent sports section though so I'll give it that.

Personally I think the driver just toss the paper out his window since I saw on the camera that on a few occasions the paper was kicked under our gate. When we call the paper a angry lady usually tell us that our gate is locked (we don't have a lock mechanism on the gate) and that's why he don't deliver the paper when the truth is that he just toss it out his window. I don't understand why the paper think they do us a huge favor deliver? They pay the delivery driver and we pay the paper so nothing is free and should not be treated as a favor.

It is cool to have a free paper that will entertain you for more than 5 minutes. It just keeps you in the know of what is going on. Ads in there also for places like Barcade, tell of upcoming events East/West beer ngiht and so on. I was actually revising and looking over that very issue again earlier today. (Jan5-18, cover had a story of 48 hours with a certain rock star). That title in itself makes it blog worthy and worth an actual look at the article which was very interesting. One guy actually talked about his waking up in the morning routines of eating cinnabons then alot of other healthy crap like squash, broccoli, beats, and kale but then use of some kinds of drugs. Ironic in that he seemed like a health nut with the food he actually consumed but used drugs and abused alcohol left and right. The bar and restaurant directory in the back makes alot of Brooklyn bars seem very appealing. I have also seen a few spots in there of places us yelp eliters got to sample at one point or another like Nita Nita and Woodwork. Thanks for the Reco's guys. Oh yeah then there is a sex with the natural redhead section on the back page, it is usually very funny stuff that explicitly involves penetration and sexual operations.
