After our first studio closed its doors, we landed at Cinema Ballroom and we couldn't be happier. This place is essentially one big open dance floor that's always filled with several other dancers, either practicing for competition on their own or taking a lesson. As someone who is just casually learning, I am always impressed by the skill level of other dancers I see on a given night. It seems like a LOT of dedicated professionals choose this studio to practice, including the talented instructors...big shoutout to our all star teachers Jon and Nadine! So far, I've only participated in private lessons here, but there is always something going on...group classes, social gathers, recitals, etc. I'd highly recommend this place for anyone that is into dancing, whether you are just getting started of have been at it for years.

We are always travelling on her birthday and I always try to wow her with a new activity. Twin City did not disappoint! First off- her instruction was kinds of like Paul Reubens (Pee Wee.) That entertained her aunt and I. Super nice guy who was informative, let her try and was a good cheerleader. He had her up there with her legs wrapped around the bar, hands free, flying upside down on her first attempt! AMAZING! The was flipping and the finale- Pee Wee got on one bar and he had each person leave their bar and caught each person mid air! Her lesson lasted an hour and was super reasonably priced. Everyone who was working was a great cheerleader! All the others 'flying' with my daughter were super supportive. They were either looking to master the craft or trying it out. Pro tips: -Wear tight fitting athletic clothes - bring a band aid or two (you might get a callous from holding the bar) - A cat resides at the center, heads up for allergies. The cat was super lethargic and nice. HIGHLY, HIGHLY SUGGEST Giving TCTC a flying chance!

I was scared for a whole day before my evening class, but once I jumped off the platform I had nonstop fun for the next hour and a half. Time really flew (yes, I went there). What's even better is that I'm enrolled in the adult winter camp, so I have two more days left! I can't wait for acrobatics and German Wheel! The staff are wonderful and friendly while being professional and safety oriented. It's actually eerie how many things they do to keep you safe that you don't even notice. The other students are very supportive and happy to socialize between turns. It's even warm in the wintertime!

Many dance schools have inappropriate choreography for their younger dancers. Not Curio. Their choreography is appropriate/top notch and their instruction allows each dancer to progress and perform at their personal best. The education and skill of the instructors is phenomenal. What we found interesting is that when they moved to their new space this past year, we were finally able to watch each dance session (which wasn't the case at their former studio). Our girls had their occasional "off days" as young children often times do. Yet the overt frustration and impatience on behalf of the staff became more and more apparent with each subsequent week. The tipping point is when one of our girls instructors (who happened to be the owner) literally raised her voice in anger and threatened not just our daughter, but any child that did not meet expectations. Specifically, any child whose shoelaces weren't properly tied (I wish I were exaggerating) were scolded and told laces will be cut off with a scissors if the parents don't do it themselves. Our child never wanted to go back after that day and we immediately withdrew her from the remaining calendar year. What's heartbreaking is, as a parent, you trust particular people with the wellbeing of your child (we did our research, we talked to other parents, etc) and despite a seemingly safe and trusting environment, Curio proved to just the opposite.

They have a referral-for-refresher model, such that when you invite a new student to an Uptown Swing class, you are allowed to retake a class that you have already taken. Mondays, Thursdays, and now Tuesdays too. I really appreciate their 4-leveled curriculum model for actually progressing in skill; as others in the lindy world, it can be rather opaque to navigate how to become a more serious/skilled hopper, short of traveling to allll the conferences/swingouts around the world... The low-down: while I was in intermediate classes in Chicago, I was decidedly in Beginner A classes at this studio. I might be able to advance to Beginner B at this point though my husband might need a repeat or at least for us to review Beginner A moves a few more times. The teacher Peter is quite fun, and Really Really Good. Not sure if this guy was a musician or what, prior to his 2-year-path to World Champion, but he knows his stuff. 4-stars so far only because I think he sometimes misses some simpler ways he could actually -teach- the moves, but, he definitely gives some good pointers. My favorite so far is "imagine you are bouncing a ball with your butt". Hilarious. :) The studio space is a little echoey, so it's sometimes hard to discern what anyone is saying. If dancers crowded IN closer to Peter a bit more, it might be easier to hear as well as to ask questions as we go through moves, as has happened in other classes I have taken [in Chicago]. I'm really looking forward to taking more lessons here. Looking forward to finding some local swing spots out in the wild in this new town, which seems un-easy so far.

Encouragement abounds for all the dancers. They offer rec classes and a performing arts program (for the more committed dancer).
