Since I was shopping there today, I figured it was time to visit... I won't be using that "out of my way" line any longer. For me, this store compares favorably to one I frequented when I lived in Dutchess County, Viscount. The whiskey selection is extensive, and they let you know that with the running total on the wall. I saw some harder-to-find bottles, but at the same time, two of my regular go-to bottles were absent. There's certainly enough other options. I really like the organization of the liquors as well. Everything was easy to find. Similar to the whiskey, the wine selection is also impressive, including the New York wines in their own area. Though once again they didn't always have specific ones I like but enough other options to satisfy me. The card was easy to get. They scanned my driver's license, I completed and signed a sheet (note that there is an option to select or not whether to receive e-mail notifications), and a minute later, I had my card, plus some unexpected discounts on the bottles I purchased today. This is definitely another liquor store to consider if you are looking for a variety of bottles at one time.

Well, I am here to tell you, the rumors are true! They have a ton of barrel picks. I grabbed the Green River barrel pick and the 1792 full proof barrel pick. I tried the Green River. Woah, it's delicious. It comes in at 132 proof but it drinks much lower and has all the complexities you look for in a great sipper bourbon. Worth the trip! Price-checking several well-known websites and digging a little deeper, I landed at We Speak Wine. Their website was easy to navigate through. Although they are mostly a wine cellar, I was able to find the two sakes that I wanted. I really liked that I don't recognize a single brand of sake that they carried (except for Otokoyama). I'm no sake connoisseur but I was interested in both their high-end stuff as well as the affordable stuff. Highest priced sake was $180 and cheapest was $15. No Sho Chiku Bai or Hakkaisan (Thank Buddha). As for wines, the huge variety and selection are mind-boggling. If you know what you want, or if you want to play "bottle roulette," this is the place. Shipping was $15.54 for 2 bottles but they delivered right on time as promised and their packing was great. No packing peanuts, no soggy box, no chards of glass to attack my unsuspecting hand. Nonetheless, I appreciate the accompanying refrigerator magnet, the business card with a human name on it, and a human hand-written "Thank you!" on my order summary that was folded neatly into a logo envelope. I also appreciate that this is a small or relatively new business (my order number is only 3 digits big) in Troy, near Albany in upstate New York. By the way, the address is the same as a local liquor store, Hoosick Street Wine Cellar Discount, so look for that if you're in the area. I found it funny that I live in a state that is closer to Japan and produces fine wines and yet I ordered sake from a wine cellar on the opposite side of the country, especially when K&L Wine Merchant is not that far away. Anyway, there is a bunch of interesting bottles that I am eyeing at We Speak Wine and when the occasion calls for it, I will order from them again.

When I was moving recently, they seemed extremely happy to help me out with boxes, and they'll often give you little gifts, like free Bacardi glasses. They definitely are great neighbors for the Delaware Ave area. That said, I think they are a little pricier than other places, and the wine selection lacks a little. There are plenty of Napa Valley and other Northern Cali wines, but not very many wines from France or Spain. But for liquor or a quick bottle of wine for dinner, it's a good place to stop.

This store is a hidden gem, it may not be as big as empire wine or all star wine and liquors in Latham, but it has all the hard to acquire, high quality selections that nether store offers. For example, I can not obtain the 2014 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir anywhere else but Capital wines. Other stores sell the more expensive, the same vineyard Pinot noir but from the Santa Barbara location. This year marks their ten year anniversary in business, and they provide such a inspirational selection of high-quality wines, it's my personal favorite wine store when I'm buying wine for someone special, cheers :)

The store is laid out well. I don't really consider myself a "wine guy" (in the sense that I really enjoy wine, but I'm by no…read moremeans an expert or even amateur oenophile - my idea of "laying down" a bottle is saving it for next week) but after visiting a few wine stores in New York, having lived in California for a decade in a county with a dozen vineyards in close driving distance, Trader Joe's, and very wine-oriented restaurants, I am starting to think I may have to reassess that, relatively. Consider that a disclaimer that I suspect your mileage may vary with this particular store. This store has a small collection that gravitates to the $15 bottle of wine, if I may, which could be nice in and of itself. That's the right range for a quick bottle to go with dinner, but this being New York, you can't get wine in the grocery stores, so you have to remember to make a special trip. Unless you're shopping at the Co-op next door, I don't think this has quite enough of a selection or incredible bargains to make it a "destination" wine store. The California stock is heavy on the usual suspects from Napa and Sonoma counties; they had very few from the less well-known but significantly better Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties, and the staffer who was helping me didn't seem very aware about those vineyards. There were not a lot of South American or Aussie choices, which IMHO have produced some of the tastiest "bargain" wines in the $10-$20 range in recent years. The French selections are heavy on heritage vineyards, and in terms of value or specialness, I wasn't really sent by what was there. The Italians I thought were a poor lot. The grape selection is also very conservative - heavy on the merlots and chiantis and chardonnays, fewer choices in the cab francs and montepulcianos and pinot gris, if I can use that as a short hand for where I'm coming from in terms of taste. They had some decent syrahs, but nothing in what I'd call "full throat" labels. I obviously haven't tried every bottle in the joint, so take it fwiw this is just based on the selections I've had before. I will say of the half dozen bottles I took home, letting the staffer make suggestions, we haven't really had more than one bottle that seemed like it was a good wine at the price point. I give the store plenty of karmic credit, though, for having staff eager to help and coming out from behind the counter to try to answer my questions, and for that reason I'll come back a few more times while I comparison shop the weird world of New York wine sales and see if I can get into the "top shelves" here, as it were. I didn't look at the liquor in too much detail, as we don't drink a lot, but it seemed like a fairly thin selection. We have a couple of weirdo liquers (the two kinds of chartreuse) we drink on special occasions, that they didnt have, and the single malt scots whiskey selection was unremarkable. It's a local store, I appreciated their efforts, so as I said it's worth giving an extra shot to. Wine shopping is unusually an individual thing so the three-star rating is purely personal.
