Price-checking several well-known websites and digging a little deeper, I landed at We Speak Wine. Their website was easy to navigate through. Although they are mostly a wine cellar, I was able to find the two sakes that I wanted. I really liked that I don't recognize a single brand of sake that they carried (except for Otokoyama). I'm no sake connoisseur but I was interested in both their high-end stuff as well as the affordable stuff. Highest priced sake was $180 and cheapest was $15. No Sho Chiku Bai or Hakkaisan (Thank Buddha). As for wines, the huge variety and selection are mind-boggling. If you know what you want, or if you want to play "bottle roulette," this is the place. Shipping was $15.54 for 2 bottles but they delivered right on time as promised and their packing was great. No packing peanuts, no soggy box, no chards of glass to attack my unsuspecting hand. I guess I got a good deal at the right time. Even at these higher prices, they'll still make you feel better by listing a higher price and using font-edit strikethrough. Nonetheless, I appreciate the accompanying refrigerator magnet, the business card with a human name on it, and a human hand-written "Thank you!" on my order summary that was folded neatly into a logo envelope. I also appreciate that this is a small or relatively new business (my order number is only 3 digits big) in Troy, near Albany in upstate New York. By the way, the address is the same as a local liquor store, Hoosick Street Wine Cellar Discount, so look for that if you're in the area. I found it funny that I live in a state that is closer to Japan and produces fine wines and yet I ordered sake from a wine cellar on the opposite side of the country, especially when K&L Wine Merchant is not that far away. Anyway, there is a bunch of interesting bottles that I am eyeing at We Speak Wine and when the occasion calls for it, I will order from them again.

I went on a Saturday late afternoon, and a crowd of older people who have gone to seed was crowding a tasting bar where free wine samples were being poured. As I perused their wine selection a seller invited me to taste wine; the large gang greedily dominated the area where the wine was being poured and were well lit, loud, and uninviting. There was no way to break in and it wasn't welcoming. Some came and went but none were buying anything; they were there for the free taste and free grub. As I looked at bottles of wine I was almost mowed down by a woman who lumbered in, grabbed a hunk of bread and spinach dip that she failed to wipe off her face, and muscled up to get a free drink (she quickly returned later to feed some more.) It was quite a spectacle. Frankly, I was pretty grossed out. It wasn't the scene I expected in Delmar. The wine selection is quite thin; the spirits almost non-existent. I did buy a few bottles of wine; I've opened two: a Macon which is mediocre to bad, and an Argentine pinot noir which was simply awful. Neither was inexpensive. I can only imagine the Chablis I bought will be equally bad. The saleswoman was pleasant, if disinterested. She was civil but while not busy her priority was getting my card rung and me on my way. I found ciders here and there in the store, not grouped together. Since I am not a beer connoisseur, I couldn't say if their selection was good or even organized. I have been to other beverage centers in the area so I know what is "normal" and what is "a hurricane just went through here." I saw a lot of cool ciders and picked some up, as well as a case of sparkling water. There was a half-full (or half-empty?) cup of beer on one shelf, which I assume was leftover from a tasting event they ran two days ago. I saw one employee several times walking around and stocking. He never said a word to me when I came in, never asked if I needed help, or didn't thank me for stopping by. His only word was "yup" when I preemptively set out my ID. Maybe I came on a bad day, or maybe it is normal for this place. I dunno, but there are better options that I enjoy more so I doubt I will be back.
