Our group of 4 adults and 1 infant went here for our first night in Barcelona and it was such a fabulous welcome! We ordered the patatas bravas, steamed mussels, patron peppers, tortilla, ham croquettes, beef tenderloin montadito with foie, Iberian ham platter, and a couple bottles of cava to wash it all down with! The service was friendly and welcoming and the food came out lightning fast! Everything tasted amazing and fresh! We were extremely delighted with our meal and ordered 3 desserts to share afterwards: St teresa "Torrija", crema catalana, and the coconut pudding. The unanimous winner was the Torrija! So, just left Casa Battlo and was hungry. My friend suggested Vinitus; close by and recommended by friends. When it comes to food or dessert, my arm doesn't have to be twisted very hard. Or at all. Unless it's fast food or hot dogs. Anyway, there's a wait, But not long. Before we knew it we were called and ushered into their downstairs dining area. Guess you can say there's three. Outdoor, the main level and downstairs. Service was pretty good. The team brought out dishes quickly and correctly. And though I wouldn't say they were attentive, they were always around to just wave down when ordering more. Our server, also spoke English. I can't speak for everyone else but it seems like because of the high tourist population, a lot of people in the area spoke several languages. As for the food, see pics. Dishes I liked. Dishes I didn't. Know the following - if you order Tuna Belly, it's cooked. Must be a culture or regional thing because when I request Tuna Belly, it's usually sashimi. Or at the least, seared. This was full on cooked. Their bread with tomato was lacking as served. If you order it, ask for garlic and salt to give it flavor. If they will, toasted too. It'll make a difference. The rest of the dishes, in my opinion were fine. Not that those above were bad - just not what I was expecting nor to my taste. I will say that my friend and I were in agreement that the dessert we got was aces. The Creme Brulee Bread Pudding. I love how the desserts in Barcelona aren't overly sweet. On the menu, the name of the dish was Torrija St Teresa. So, would I make a return visit? For me, it would be a coin flip. It was around 4pm and my friend and I had been exploring and had not eaten since 7am, so we both were famished. It was really busy, but thankfully we were seated inside within 5 minutes. The restaurant has two floors (1st and basement) and it's very spacious. We ordered a wide array of items and taste-wise it was all over the place. *RECOMMEND -Calcots En Tempura (7.00): Tempura fried Green Onion -I enjoyed this. The onion was slightly sweet and the tempura gave it a nice crunch. -Navajas (10.95): Razor Clams - This was fantastic. The did not have a seafood/fishy taste and the lemon gave it the perfect acidity to balance the texture. -M Torrija St Teresa (3.15): Creme Brulee Bread Pudding - I saw another yelp rave about this dessert so I wanted to try it out for myself. This was my favorite dish at this meal as I was stuffed by the time dessert was served. I would definitely get this. I didn't particularly care for this as the small french bread was pretty hard and the olive oil and tomatoes drowned out the flavors and I couldn't taste any garlic :( -Bacalao All I oli Mel (11.95): Codfish with honey "allioli" - Personally, this was a tad too sweet for my liking, but the fish itself was nice soft and buttery. -Canelones De La Casa (6.60): Homemade Pasta - This was a tuna casserole and I really did not like this. I took one bite and that was it. *DRINKS -Agua (2.20 x 2): Bottled Water -Cocoa Cola (2.95): Bottled Coke copa cerveza (3.15): House Beer SUMMARY There were definitely a lot of tourists here, but I think some of the items were really good. One of several tapas spots we had recommended by friends. While it wasn't my favorite of all the tapas spots we visited during our trip, it's definitely worthy of dropping by if your schedule and belly will allow it. We got lucky with walking in for a table of 5 on a busy Saturday evening. I think in general folks tend to eat dinner much later out here. No issues walking in to almost anywhere in Barcelona before 7pm to try and grab a table for dinner. Another thing I noticed that was common in Barcelona was a 2hr limit to a table just about everywhere. Being American, 2 hours is more than enough. "Give me quick and efficient service and I can be out in 45 minutes." Anyhow, overall vibe of this one is trendy. They actually have quite a bit of seating both inside (two levels) and out. Service is minimal as I've noticed at pretty much all restaurants in Barcelona, if you need anything just flag them. Food overall is good. I always have to remind myself portions are smaller, but at the same time you can try a ton of variety. Some of my favorites were the octopus, short rib, and lobster rice. This place was terrific. Just go! It is not elegant, but is very nice. When I arrived at 9:30 pm on a Wednesday night, the restaurant was full and there were about 15 people waiting outside. They were able to seat everyone within about 15 minutes though. I came in as a solo and sat at the bar next to another solo. By the time I left an hour later, there was plenty of room in the restaurant. That's not because they rush you out, but because the food (tapas primarily) comes out quickly, and the staff is very attentive and friendly. The food was very good. I had an asparagus, mushroom, and Iberian ham dish that was delightful. I also had a cheese plate (which was more expensive than most of the things on the menu ... but was worth it - large portions of very good cheeses). I am not a food snob, but am particular. What I had was great, and from my position at the bar I could see two of the grills where meats, shrimp, and vegetables were being cooked-up and they all looked very good. I am a bit of a snob about wine. If I were there for a bottle, they had a decent selection. But just by the glass, they had white (regular and special) and red (regular and special) -- each a bottle chosen to feature that week. I was not expecting much, but for the "special" red I asked for, I was given the choice of more fruity or more bold and, having chosen the 'bold" was poured a nice Spanish red. It was very good for the tapas meal that evening, for about 3.50 Euros. Went well with the meal choices, as the server assured me when I requested it. It is a well-decorated restaurant and quite popular -- there was a line of 10-20 individuals when we came on a Thursday evening around 8 PM, but their service is very fast and we only had a 20 minute wait (for a party of 5). Overall, the tapas were decent; I was a big fan of cod with honey allioli. Cod with honey allioli (5/5): This was delicious and I would order it again. The cod was warm and melted in my mouth and the fruit jam and honey flavors really added to it, which was a wonderful surprise. Fried hot green peppers (4/5): This is a common dish at tapas restaurants and the ones we had at Vinitus were on the better end. Salty, savory, with a healthy (flavor-wise) dose of oil. Pan con tomate (4/5): The bread was fresh, and the flavor of the oil and tomato soaked through it well. Fried spring onions (3/5): The sauce complemented the spring onions well, but the spring onions were served in larger chunks, which meant we needed to cut them. However, the texture of spring onions makes it hard to cut at times (because it's a bit stringy) so the tempura would fall off, making it difficult to appreciate the dish completely. Fried artichoke (5/5): Light and crispy! Artichoke is not easy to make, and they did it well. Escalivada (3.5/5): Eggplant, peppers, and fig (?) at the top. I liked the sweetness of the fig as an addition but I think the eggplants and peppers could have had a stronger flavor (perhaps smokier). Asparagus and mushrooms (4/5): Both were cooked well, especially the mushrooms -- bursting with flavor! Would have appreciated more generous portions for this dish specifically. Ravioli with goat cheese and pear (3/5): The pear was a great addition and its sweetness, combined with the savoriness of the pasta, made for an interesting flavor combination. The ravioli itself was fairly standard. Gambas al Ajillo (4/5): Solid! The shrimp were well-cooked and very flavorful. Seafood tapas are the specialty here! Be warned, it takes about an hour to get a table here, possibly more if you are a visible tourist. When our table of six tried to order tap water, we were shot down by a sharp "no" by our waitress, even though restaurants are required to serve tap water for free. Just be warned that servers in Spain might not take well to a request for tap water. To point out some favorites: - The croquettes are light, airy, and fried to perfection. The texture is very crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside. Our table ended up ordering more of these at the end of our meal, that's how delicious they were! - The potatoes bravas are light and fluffy. The white sauce on top adds an elevating creaminess! - The churros are a delectable bite! The cinnamon sweetness of the churro is really enhanced by the chocolate dipping sauce. Some critiques: - The mussels have a strong briney seafood smell and flavor to them, which in my experience, is more prominent in seafood that isn't fresh. The texture is also a bit rubbery. - The octopus is also rather rubbery and chewy. - The mini burgers were so dry. Do not order these. - The grilled shishito peppers are rather bland. Vinitus has to be one of the hottest restaurants in town. The concierge at our hotel recommended it on a Saturday night, and we showed up around 7:30pm without a reservation. We waited about 45 minutes for a table outside (shorter wait for inside) and there was a constraint stream of people trying to get in. The outdoor seating was pleasant with no loud road noise and nice heat lamps. We ordered many dishes, and our favorites were the chicken, cheese and caramelized onion on toast, the grilled mussels, clams and shrimp, and especially the bread pudding which is their specialty. It was one of the top meals we had in Barcelona, but I would suggest making a reservation or coming earlier to avoid a long wait or getting shut out. Oh this is quite the popular spot and after 7:30 a small queue will form. We just happened to walk by it by simple chance and glad we did. My pasta of the day was probably the best cheese filled ravioli I've ever had in my life. The fried mix with squid, peppers and small fish was also exceptional . Otherwise I think I would ask more questions from neighboring tables or your server for suggestions as we had a few items that bombed on the other end of the spectrum. Good wine list, and house wines by the glass. The Tortilla was one of the best we had while in country for two weeks, and the portion of Jamón for the price in Barcelona was one of the best we found. Amazing flavors! After a week of seafood, potatoes, and paella, we just wanted some serious carne, and we found it here. Although they are well known for their seafood, we gorged on carne montaditos with and without foie. Alex ate 4 basic montaditos con carne, the equivalent of an entire filet mignon, lol! Meat was so juicy and perfectly cooked! Medium rare, nice and pink inside large chunks of steak super tender, moist and loaded with flavor. And the foie was absolutely divine- thick, luscious pieces! No skimping here! I had to have another. We also shared an order of padron peppers which was tiny, and the asparagus and mushrooms. Both dishes were cooked perfectly and adequately salted, unlike many of the cheaper tapas bars that under-season. I also had to have one last taste of Iberico ham. We washed it all down with a vermouth, which came with a slice of orange but no olive, and bottled water. To round out the meal we had to have a Torrija de Sta Teresa each. They were incredibly rich and buttery, creamy with a perfect crisp disc of caramelized sugar on top! Overall, possibly the most perfect meal of a very, very long trip. I am so glad this was the last meal of our summer vacation! Service was very courteous and available in English. Curiously, many of the wait staff appeared Filipino but conversed fluently in both English and Spanish. The two hostesses were incredibly courteous and civil, considering how rude some of the guests were being. I can't imagine being that polite when hundreds of people keep asking them the same three questions all night- how long is the wait? Is there someplace we can have a drink? Can we just eat at the bar? (facepalm!) Answers: 30 to 40 minutes, no and no. Bar seats are exactly like all the others. Every. Single. Person. So if you read this, Please be kind to the hostesses, and politely give your name, number of party, and wait your turn. Don't wander too far, and don't keep asking where you are on the list. The beef was really on the rare side, good if you like that, but I would have preferred more medium, but we weren't asked. Our fave was the crab salad with grilled prawn on toast, the papas bravas here weren't that good, the tiny burgers weren't either. The grilled prawns were delicious! We got the mussels which tasted like they had apple cider vinegar which was not good, and we got shrimp in some sauce that were also not our fave. We ordered, salmon montaditos, fried jalapeño some sort of grilled fish (I can't remember the exact name of the dish), fried peppers, cod in alioli, tomato bread, Spanish omelette, pear and Gorgonzola ravioli. My favorite though was the Spanish omelette though it's a common classic Spanish dish. It was tender and melted in the mouth. I also LOVED the ravioli though it doesn't seem like a typical tapas menu item. All of the dishes were so flavorful and fresh, and they stuck out to me. The price was so reasonable for what we received. It was even one of the cheapest meals, because all of this came to around $47 for three people including two coffees.
