I used this company to convert 18 Hi8 8mm video tapes after my old Sony camera died in the process of converting them and I couldn't justify the cost of buying another camera to finish the process. He was even able to convert Metal Particle tapes that weren't playing properly in the old camera when it was working. So I would highly recommend it. Be advised, that there is no physical office. The business is being run inside the owner's 2nd floor apartment, and you'll need to meet him outside the building. But once you get over that , I think you'll be satisfied with the price and the end product. Let's face it, keeping the overhead low helps keep the prices low! read more

Robert does God's work. I recently discovered a stash of seventeen, decades-old Hi8 video cassette tapes filled with family memories, but had no way of viewing the tapes. Robert had previously helped me convert an old VHS-C tape with around 20-30 minutes worth of video, so I decided to reach out again. I dropped off the stash to Robert's location in the Inner Richmond and promptly forgot about it. Three days later, Robert notified me via email that the conversion was done. Highly recommended. Robert did such a great job converting my ADATs that I decided to have him convert my 150 cassettes (non-commercial) and other media instead of doing this myself. I had 23 reels of old family 8mm film from the 1950s and 1960s, some of it with old splices, that I wanted to convert to mp4 files. The physical condition of the films made me reluctant to take them to a place like Costco, but I feared the expense of paying a service to convert nearly two dozen films, so I almost bought a Wolverine digitizer to do it myself, but then I discovered Robert on Yelp. I'm glad I did. The price ended up being much lower than from competitors, and not that much higher than Costco, and I didn't have to worry about the old splices. The main disadvantage for me was having to make two trips from the North Bay, but it was worth it. He stored the files on a hard drive I supplied, and uploaded them to Google Drive for my out-of-state brother and sister to download. A word of caution: I was extremely nervous about using Robert after I dropped off the films. Despite the very professional website and great reviews, Vintage Media Transfer is really just a guy in an upstairs flat who won't even invite you into his apartment. Both when I dropped the films off and when I picked them up, I could only stand in the hallway outside his apartment door. It seemed so unprofessional that I was very nervous for the two weeks that he had the films. However in the end, it was worth it. I would use him again and I recommend him highly. read more
