Recently had 90+ Super8 reels from the 70's/80's digitized by DRS. They are patient, beyond helpful, accommodating, transparent, and went above and beyond what was expected -- I wanted HD scans, which were provided, but since the quality of my films was often poor, they also gave me a full set of scans at 720 resolution (those seemed to generate fewer visible artefacts from substandard source material) -- and this was done at no extra charge. End result was great and I can't recommend them highly enough if you are in the area. read more

I had a 35-year-old cassette tape of an interview with a family member. In my case, I didn't want them to clean it up, although this may be a service that they offer. I just wanted the tape converted to a digital file, which they did very quickly and at an extremely reasonable price. When I got two files - reflecting the "A" and "B" sides of the tape, I asked if these could be merged sequentially, and they sent a new combined file immediately. With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting a lot of people, i had some time to transfer some old school VHS break-dancing videos I captured from 1996-2002. This place was able to transpose all of my content (4hrs worth) directly to DVDs (4xDVDs). I was also able to pay for electronic copies (mP4) that was sent via WeTransfer, This way i can have these memories for a lifetime. They make the process very easy. Mail or Curb Side Drop off or Pick Up (option i selected). I'm not sure how the pricing is, but I thought it was a good rate considering VHS is less used these days. Man oh man, do Sean and Andrea continue to support and amaze! In the past month they have made a VHS tape from 30 years ago watchable on modern media, and even saved me with a work project when a DVD was required instead of the more current youtube link. I had several hundred family photos I wanted to share with my two sisters and wanted a professional scanning service that did great work and was reasonably priced: I found that and more with Digital Roots Studio. They carefully scanned each photo and, as an unexpected bonus, labeled each group of photos as I had (something I had done to organize the photos for myself, not expecting they would take the time to add these labels to each group). This made it super easy for me to then quickly create a slideshow to share at a family event--a huge hit. They also scanned each photo "right side up," which not all scanning services do. Had a bunch of old VHS tapes transferred to DVDs. Super-clear communication, and good results!

First, Sean and Andrea are incredibly nice and helpful. Second, they are also professional: they know they're stuff. I brought an old 8mm film for digitizing, and not only is the quality is excellent, but Digital Roots called me when it was ready (don't take that service for granted!). Let me say, I am also digitizing my family's 8mm films with a $400 commercial device, and the difference is night and day: the films from the Wolverine digitizer look like they were shot with a cheap 1990's cell phone. You can barely make out faces sometimes. It often takes me over an hour to digitize 5 minutes of film, because the DIY machine frequently jams, freezes, and looses frame alignment. Meanwhile, Digital Roots uses a top-of-the-line 8mm digitizer, and the film they made for me looks like, well, a movie, not a junky cell-phone capture of a television. See, I can't afford to digitize all 50 reels I've got, not until I know what is on them. But what is clear is that any movie of value (not the film a random neighbor's dog) will be brought to Digital Roots for proper digitizing, and it will be worth it. If you have any doubts, do one reel...then check it against the only cheap digitizer, the Wolverine 8mm, on YouTube. (Also, I asked about their slide scanner, and wow, they're using a Nikon 5000. Also a very high quality scanner that will really get the color in your Kodachromes.) read more

My parents had a collection of very old family photos (some dating back 50+ years) that existed only in printed-form. When my parents decided to move, I was worried that the pictures would either get damaged or potentially lost while in transit. I came across Digital Roots Studio on Yelp while searching for professional photo scanning services. From the very beginning, Andrea and her husband Sean were superb. They were very polite, professional and responsive. We met Andrea in November and dropped off about 20 photo albums. Andrea patiently reviewed with us the various scanning options along with the corresponding prices. Importantly, Andrea did not try to convince us to proceed with the more-expensive options. Rather, she sent us samples of the more-expensive vs. less-expensive scanning options and let us make our own decisions. Digital Roots also has some good equipment. One of my parents' old photo reels was in microfilm slides, or something along those lines. Andrea and Sean had the equipment to scan them. The customer service is absolutely fantastic as well. I did not have to go back to the store after dropping off my photos. Andrea and Sean sent me a hard disk with the scanned photos on them. I had all of them printed and gave them to my parents this past weekend as a gift. They were completely blown away. They hadn't seen some of those pictures in over 20 years. How incredibly lucky am I to have found Sean and Andrea to help me out with an extremely time-sensitive need. I LOVE DIGITAL ROOTS. I found a stash of dusty VHS tapes filled with dusty memories: birthday parties, graduations, my grandparents' wedding (transferred from a reel of film to VHS many years ago!!!) and wanted - nay, needed! - to rescue them. Thankfully, I found Digital Roots in Oakland, a business dedicated completely to the task of rescuing your old memories. Andrea helped me from start to finish, which was no small task. She transferred all the tapes to DVD, which took about a week. Only then did I realize that I could only edit and make copies of the footage for Grandma if it was copied from the VHS tapes to a hard drive. She then helped me figure out what kind of hard drive was best for digital images, what program to use to edit the footage, and how to send it to various family members (it's coming, Grandma!!!). She even let me ship my new hard drive directly to the store so that I didn't have to make an additional trip. In short, Andrea is a hero. Am filled with gratitude towards these folks. They took incredible care in digitizing and improving the overall quality, of a very big order of very old slides (and some negatives and close to 50 reels of Super 8 film). Like from the '60s old (reels were from the '70s & '80s). Absolutely love digital roots. I needed 7 vhs tapes transferred to dvds. Not only did they respond quickly via email, they also gave me the teacher's discount and charged me for five 2 hour vhs tapes and two 1 hour vhs tapes (when I told them I had seven 2 hour vhs tapes) since two of them ended up being shorter than an hour! What a fantastic experience! I had an old vhs of a difficult-to-find British theatre production, and I wanted to convert it to dvd. This two-person team handled the order quickly. They rearranged their schedules several times to work with my own itinerary nonsense, and even waited twenty minutes for me when I was late for the pick-up. I tried to make up for the wait by tipping them, but they weren't interested in that at all. In fact, Andrea reeeally wanted to give me change after I paid for a $19.96 order with a twenty. She is just such a decent, friendly and hard-working person. My day was better after meeting her. :) In terms of my project I was so very pleased with their conversion of my vhs to dvd, and the extra effort they took to make me an extra copy when they felt that the printing on the cover of the dvd wasn't neat enough (I think it was perfect).
