We attended Saturday's performance of "Ain't Nothing But The Blues". Wow!!! I need to search my thesaurus for more superlatives: Amazing, soul-stirring, energetic, PERFECT.....(got it?). Every performer brought their A-game. If you love jazz and blues, you will get your fill at this musical. There is very little dialogue in between songs. Just enough to introduce changes in style or era. I can't imagine any improvement to this play.The multi talented Kenya Fashaw is always excellent, but she took us to a new level with her sexy rendition of Someone Else Is Stepping In. It would take a while page to give props to each of the cast members who had us bouncing, rocking and trying hard to refrain from singing along. I encourage all music lovers to treat themselves to this experience. read more

I learned from past experience to arrive earlier to get closer parking. I really like this theater. Their productions are great and going to a matinee makes for a wonderful Sunday afternoon. This time we were seeing Ride the Cyclone. I had gotten tickets because a few friends were going and it was a favorite musical of my daughter's. She thoroughly enjoyed the production. I have been to see a couple performances so far. Both have been top-notch. The first one I saw was a year or two ago, and it was Spamalot. The show was fantastic, and, despite using minimal staging or props, they very much set the scene. The acting was excellent. I really enjoyed the performances, and I definitely got my moneys worth. The laughs per minute factor was off the charts. The concession stand had a decent selection of beer, wine, and mixed drinks. More recently, I went here to see a one woman show of Who's Holiday. Despite the fact that this was shown in the Cabaret space, which is basically a fancy way of saying the lobby, it really worked. The young woman performing this is such a talented actress. This was an enchanting and hilarious couple of hours. I remembered the actress from her performance in Spamalot. Jenny Mather is a treasure. read more

This is a great, intimate theater. If you sit in the front row, prepare to practically be part of the show. They get right up close and personal. Spamalot was stellar! I saw this years ago at Buell and actually had a lot more fun here at Vintage. The cast was having a blast and the energy was infectious. Tickets are very reasonable, especially when compared to the "big" theaters downtown. The beverage prices are also much more reasonable, $4 a beer. And, no fee for parking in the lot, although space is limited. They have a limited bar with canned beer, canned cocktails and wine. Be ready to wait in line, the bar is popular. Plan ahead for the bathroom as well, only a few stalls and a long line at intermission. The neighborhood is rough (a block off East Colfax) and parking is scarce. Plan ahead and get there early to get parking in the lot or nearby on the street. You won't want to walk too far through the 'hood to your car. Vintage is right next to a Lightrail stop, as well. But, not a stop I'd like to be standing at long waiting for a train. Vintage is just a block away from Lady Justice Brewery, which is an awesome place to pre or post-game. read more

The first show I've seen at Vintage Theatre is Ride the Cyclone - a phenomenal regional premiere! The production showcases 7 very talented actors who convey a fun, zany tale that has deeper meaning than what reveals at first glance. The songs are terrific and delivered in impressive waves of emotion, comedy and drama! I've seen the show 3 times now, and cannot wait to go again! Very impressed with this intimate, high quality local theater, and I'm so glad to now be in the know! A special hidden Denver gem! read more

This is a true hidden gem! I had the best time ever watching Shakespeare in love and can't wait to go back for another show. Can't believe it was my first time at Vintage Theatre but better late than never. It's a very intimate venue so you get to fully experience all the raw emotions. Even though it was my first time there, I've heard really wonderful things about it and that they always do an outstanding job with production of various shows and events. Their bar area is really nice as well, and the staff is very attentive. Overall, I can't recommend it enough! Someone else wrote that this theater is hidden gem. And it truly is. What a great space. I had never been before coming to see the show Drowsy Chaperone last night. Walking in the theater it's super cute and has a small stage in the front for cabaret and small shows. There's a bar and two theaters in the space, one bigger than the other. Everyone who works there is super friendly. The talent that this little theater is putting out is astonishing. The show was incredible. I cried at the end. I didn't think such a small theater had that much quality on the stage. It was just wonderful. I can't wait to see another show here. read more

Came here with a friend on Sunday to see Mary Louise Lee in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill by Lanie Robertson and Directed by Betty Hart. It's 1959 at Emerson's Bar and Grill in Philadelphia - where the audience is about to witness one of Billie Holiday's last performances, given just four months before her death. Holiday's hit songs are interlaced with humorous and heartbreaking memories to create a riveting portrait of a legend and her music. We were spellbound by the performance both of Mary Louise Lee as Lady Day and Trent Hines as Jimmy Powers, her piano player. The set was fantastic and it felt like we were actually at Emerson's. Mary Louise Lee did a phenomenal portrayal of Billie Holiday and man can she sing--left me with goosebumps! Trent Hines was absolutely superb at the piano and as Jimmy. This is definitely a must see production where it transfers you to around 1959 when music was so alive! Absolutely fabulous and so well worth enjoying and experiencing! The entire staff of Vintage Theater is top-notch. Kudos go out to the Director, Betty Hart on this great production. Lady Day will be playing through 18 February 2018 and you can get tickets at vintagetheatre.com. You can purchase drinks/snacks at the bar and bring them into the theatre! Update: The Denver Post provided a Theater Review in the Life & Culture Section of 25 Jan 2018. Although the review was pretty good, I disagree with the reviewer when she stated this wasn't the best example of dramatic theater in town and that the storytelling didn't mention certain issues from the Tony-winning version on Broadway (dealing with her addiction). Well, after seeing this exceptional performance, it was spot on and we got enough information about addiction but it didn't need to be the focus of it. Not all productions need to address or mirror other performances. For this mid-size venue, it was dramatic, intense, touching and it transported us to that time in history where we felt we were actually seeing Billie Holiday singing at Emerson's Bar and Grill! read more

This theater would get five stars if the temperature were better controlled. As far as I could tell, there is no A/C in the theater, only in the lobby. The lobby bar is great, and there is plenty of room to enjoy a drink before or between acts. read more

This is truly a hidden gem! I would, and do, recommend the Vintage Theater to everyone! It's a breath of fresh air. It's extremely fairly priced. It's so unique and eccentric (in all the best ways!). Full bar plus little snacks (so eat before you arrive). It's great for an adults only date night, or a family afternoon experience. Wow, my previous review of Vintage is VERY out of date... so here is act two! At the time of my original review I'd only seen a few shows at Vintage, and these were at their old location on 17th. They moved out to Aurora a couple years ago, and took over the space that Shadow used to use. It's a beautiful, modern space with a full bar, small lounge area, and more than enough space to move and mingle. Inside, you'll find two separate theaters - the smaller one has only four or five rows, but you'll see some amazing stuff here. This is where the Denver phenomenon production of RFK saw the light of day (well, night usually, I guess). Awesome production that has since been revived twice. Then you've got the larger theater, which has ten or twelve (estimate) rows of stadium seating, and a good sized stage. This is where they seem to do most of their larger plays and all musicals. Great space. Now, let's talk quality. It didn't take me long to become a season ticket holder at Vintage (I'm currently in my second year). They offer around 10 shows a year, and everything I've seen here has been extremely well done. As in, four stars from the Denver Post well done. Even the shows that are more for fun (The Drowsy Chaperone) will knock your socks off - and then, you've got more ambitious dramas, some of which are staged in two parts (ie, you'll see them on different days). This is an absolutely outstanding theater in Denver's amazing theater world. Check out their website, find a show you're interested in! This is a very cute theater nestled in the hood which surprised me since I've driven passed & never even noticed it. I wanted a Scooby snack (think that's what it's called) but they didn't have the ingredients to make me a yummy shot...but that's okay bcuz a Margarita always hits the spot (even tho they don't have Patron). The seats were comfortable & roomy. The play (Miss Saigon) was definitely a hit! I was pleasantly surprised by that helicopter scene! Great Special Affects for this small theater. I can still feel the rumble under my seat & my hair blowing in the wind from its blades...AWESOME! I'll be back. read more

I got tickets to see Vintage Theatre's production of Beauty and the Beast. What a cool gem in the Aurora Arts District. The theater is not huge, but it doesn't feel too small, either. Really, it's a perfectly sized venue for local theater. The production of Beauty and the Beast was excellent. The level of talent in the cast a whole was excellent. I was especially impressed by the male lead who played the Beast. In my limited experiences with local theater, I have found that the female voices (leads and chorus) are stellar, and the males are usually a notch or two behind. Not the case this time. Beast was incredible and more than held his own opposite a very talented Belle. Vintage Theare was a perfect way to end date night with my wife on a cold, snowy December night. I was extremely impressed by the talent and the venue, and I look forward to catching many more local productions of my favorite musicals. read more

Saw "Kiss of the Spider Woman" with my mom for the Sunday matinee. The theater is small and on a questionable stretch of Colfax east of Capitol Hill, but the experience was a pleasant surprise start to finish! The lobby/bar is very tastefully decorated in purples and golds and feels very cozy. The staff were very friendly and helpful (a nice change of pace from the "cow herders" at the DPAC) even though we showed up just a few minutes before start time (due to a miscommunication with my GPS). The seating is more like a movie theater - not assigned and more comfortable and spacious than most theaters. There are no bad seats in the house though so even showing up as close to the wire as we did we had a great view for the show. The singing and the acting were as good as anything I've seen at the Buelle. Megan Van De Hey (Aurora/Spider Woman) was especially amazing. The two male leads also gave very strong performances - I loved Gabriel Morales' interpretation of Molina. There was professional qualify choreography, too, which I had not expected at all. The only negative for the evening was the awful sythesized music that played throughout the performance. Obviously, I understand Vintage has neither the money nor the room for an orchestra, but the speakers rattled any time a bass line was played and the upper ranges sounded like a MIDI file... pretty distracting. Hopefully this place will continue to churn out great performances like this one, start filling seats, and be able to trade up to a music system that can better support these amazing performers. What a great place to catch a show! Last week, I went to a late night performance of Redneck Romeo & Juliet at the Vintage, and they totally delivered. I love how the space is set up - there really isn't a bad seat in the house. The stage is expansive, and the chairs for patrons are totally comfortable. I actually sat off to the side of the stage, but I didn't feel my viewing pleasure was impeded in the slightest. As an aside, the show was outstanding. There's a wee lobby in the front with a couple chairs and more advertisements for plays than you can shake a stick at, and the restrooms are clean and user-friendly. Plus, they have a concessions area in the theatre that offers up beer, wine, candy, soda, and cookies, all very reasonably priced. It's in a fantastic location, and I look forward to seeing more shows there in the very near future. Well done, Vintage. read more

I never knew I loved theatre until I came to Vintage Theatre. I visited this beautiful cozy theatre with a couple of friends to see Angels in America parts I and II on different nights. The location is perfect, it's right next to Vine Street Pub, a couple of blocks from D Bar Desserts, Thin Man, and St. Marks, which only compliment the appeal of this small, fully functional, independent theatre. You'll walk through the front door immediately into a small lobby with a desk and a ledge containing pamphlets, ads, and the program for the play you'll be enjoying. They take cash and credit cards. Immediately to your left is a curtained entrance. Through that you'll find rows of very comfortable seats, a small bar that serves delicious red and white wine, and various snacks, a hallway that leads to clean and freshly painted restrooms, and a small stage that you can literally reach out and touch. Seeing a play here reminds me of Arabian Nights, of kings and queens and their jesters, of a time when storytelling, playwrights, and actors like those in Shakespearean (especially the troupe from A Midsummer Night's Dream) times were rightfully placed by society on a pedestal of mystery and magic and the raw talent of it, all within arms reach. Vintage Theatre playfully prods and coddles a timeless form of entertainment that is truly lost on the television generation. This is a great theatre with no pretensions, no booming trumpets, red carpets, or random bursts of distracting glitter (albeit there may be a play coming soon with all those attractive distractions). What this company boasts is real, live, enjoyable and comfortable, up close theatre that makes you feel like you are a queen in your own court. Tickets are $18 in advance and $23 at the door, which is incredibly affordable for the quality and accommodation of the staff and building and the unspeakable talent you get to witness. Prices do range lower though, for example you can purchase both parts of Angels in America for $30 if you buy in advance, and 7 plays for $105, which is $15 per show. It baffles me that it can cost as much to see a play as it does to see a film at a Regal or United Artists when the actors are this great in person and Vintage Theatre is this real. read more

My first experience at this theater was wonderful. I am an avid theater goer and I prefer the smaller theaters. This theater was definitely small but it was the perfect size. I saw Harold and Maude and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole production. The effort that the staff put into this show made for a fantastic experience. I am a huge fan of Vintage Theater! For $20 you can see a fantastic production of some great plays and musicals. Vintage repeatedly picks out provocative themes and topics, and you never know what is next! It really is one of Denver's best venues.... And that's where it loses a star...it is SOOOO FAR OUT on East Colfax, technically it's in Aurora. It is hard to combine this theater with great dining options, and also the Colfax sketch factor is scary if say, your car won't start after the play finishes and you have to wait for AAA for 90 minutes in the the dark. But seriously- GREAT THEATER, even though they moved- have loved their shows for years. Friendly and easy to work with for ticketing. I'm embarrassed to admit that this theater lover didn't know that there was a great little theater right in his neighborhood. I mean, I've walked past it many, many times. Friends and I decided to check out their production of several one-act Colorado written dark pieces about the holidays. Looking at the address, I said, "That's got to be right next to the Vine Street Pub. I wonder if this address is wrong. There's no theater there." Well, there is a theater there. With a big sign even. But none of us had ever noticed it before. It's like it magically appeared on the block. We were all very confused. Inside is a small black-box set-up with seating for I'd guess about a hundred people. They use a sound system, and it is well lit. Just a notch above minimalism, with slight use of props, this production seemed to concentrate more on actors bringing the page to life than set design. I always appreciate that. Though, who knows how they roll for other shows. I saw the list for their 2011 season, which includes Equus and to Kill a Mockingbird. Season ticket packages were very reasonable for just over $100. I would definitely enjoy seeing more theater with them, and will likely check out at least Equus this year, being that it's a favorite. Several of the actors in the production I witnessed were quite good, especially two women who each pulled off solo monologues in 2 different 1 act pieces, both very dark and emotional in their own ways. There were some hacky performances too, but hey, it's local theater and that happens. It seems that some talented writers, directors and actors take part in this tiny theater, at least from what seeing one show would present to an audience member. I'll look forward to seeing other productions and hoping that this remains true. read more

This is a small, eccentric theatre with huge talent. I showed up with terrible expectations and I have never been happier to be wrong. Now, when I say "small" I mean it's so intimate that I could have touched the actors because I was in the front row. I created a new experience when you get to be that close! Fun little place to go see a play. Just saw City of Angels Saturday and had a great time. It's draws a different crowd that the DCPA, but the staff was very friendly and accommodating. One of several things I liked was I could take my martini in to the play itself! Another thing I really appreciated was coffee and cookies in the lobby after the play for the drive home. Only seats about 100 people so you are never far from the stage. I wouldn't say these people are ready to appear at the Buell, but they can sing a hell of a lot better than I can! read more

Came here for "Ain't Misbehavin" and wasn't disappointed. I had never been here before so I wasn't super familiar with the location. I would say that it isn't in the best part of town. That being said, the staff/volunteers were great. The main character had a mouth full of braces which really distracted me from enjoying the performances. There were some really great moments but overall, I was a bit let down. Not to mention, the dry dock apricot ale was $5/can which is just nuts. The venue was smaller and intimate which I liked. I would say that I will be back here again, but not a place I will frequent. read more

I highly recommend seeing a production at the Vintage. I saw The Goodbye People, and it was absolutely wonderful! The space is very tiny, but comfortable and intimate, and they maximize the space very well. The actors, lighting and set production were excellent. I can only imagine how expensive it can be to operate an independent theatre and pay everyone, so I give it a big thumbs up for achieving all of that! I had been to the theatre before when it was under different names, but I really hope this one sticks around, because they seem to have a good formula. read more
