Came here with a friend on Sunday to see Mary Louise Lee in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill by Lanie Robertson and Directed by Betty Hart. It's 1959 at Emerson's Bar and Grill in Philadelphia - where the audience is about to witness one of Billie Holiday's last performances, given just four months before her death. Holiday's hit songs are interlaced with humorous and heartbreaking memories to create a riveting portrait of a legend and her music. We were spellbound by the performance both of Mary Louise Lee as Lady Day and Trent Hines as Jimmy Powers, her piano player. The set was fantastic and it felt like we were actually at Emerson's. Mary Louise Lee did a phenomenal portrayal of Billie Holiday and man can she sing--left me with goosebumps! Trent Hines was absolutely superb at the piano and as Jimmy. This is definitely a must see production where it transfers you to around 1959 when music was so alive! Absolutely fabulous and so well worth enjoying and experiencing! The entire staff of Vintage Theater is top-notch. Kudos go out to the Director, Betty Hart on this great production. Lady Day will be playing through 18 February 2018 and you can get tickets at vintagetheatre.com. You can purchase drinks/snacks at the bar and bring them into the theatre! Update: The Denver Post provided a Theater Review in the Life & Culture Section of 25 Jan 2018. Although the review was pretty good, I disagree with the reviewer when she stated this wasn't the best example of dramatic theater in town and that the storytelling didn't mention certain issues from the Tony-winning version on Broadway (dealing with her addiction). Well, after seeing this exceptional performance, it was spot on and we got enough information about addiction but it didn't need to be the focus of it. Not all productions need to address or mirror other performances. For this mid-size venue, it was dramatic, intense, touching and it transported us to that time in history where we felt we were actually seeing Billie Holiday singing at Emerson's Bar and Grill!

This theater would get five stars if the temperature were better controlled. As far as I could tell, there is no A/C in the theater, only in the lobby. The lobby bar is great, and there is plenty of room to enjoy a drink before or between acts.

Seating is great, and the performances are reasonably priced. Talent is top notch! Parking could be better, but it's an older part of town.

A poetic thriller about a would-be poet and part-time librarian named Sara McKeon whose lover of ten weeks, David Ames, is found dead one hot August morning in the city of Chicago. It appears that David, owner and manager of an expensive art-deco restaurant, may have been involved in several illicit activities including kidnapping, rape and murder. Unable to believe that the man she gave her heart to was a killer, and outraged that the police seem to have closed the book on the case, Sara begins her own investigation of the crime and is led deeper and deeper through the urban labyrinth into the contemporary underworld. As the detective story moves forward in time, scenes from the love affair take us back to the moment when Sara and David first met. Finally the plots converge, and Sara finds herself face to face with the person who murdered her beloved. All the actors were awesome and I love how they put their heart and soul into their characters.

Yes, I'm definitely a fan of Cherry Creek Theater!…read more CCT is a relatively new addition to the Denver theater scene, and have just begun their second season of productions. They're so new, in fact, they don't actually have a traditional theater space. They partner with the Shaver-Ramsey rug gallery in Cherry Creek and hold their performances in the large room off to the side of the main showroom. The acoustics are wonderful, and the space works really well. The performance we saw was in-the-round, so there wasn't a bad seat in the place. They don't focus on one specific type of theater - you'll find dramas, comedies, even musicals. I suspect that anything you see will be quite good as they get some of the best acting talent in Denver, and do a solid job with their script selection. The CCT also offers refreshments before the show and during intermission, including wine, most of which seemed to just have a suggested "donation" amount. You are allowed to bring drinks into the theater - yay! They find places around the area (Whole Foods, for example) and bring in pretty decent bites. So, there you go - yet another theater in Denver you perhaps never knew was there. Check it out!
