This wine shop was a recommendation by our hotel conceirge. Tucked away in a small shopping strip in the corner of Liholiho St and Wilder Ave is Vintage Wine Cellar. This wine shop is a treasure trove of imported wines, spirits, and beer. Their wine selection is decent and pricing reasonable especially in their champagne. They have a wonderful range of selections from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, etc. They also carry wines from Washington, California, and Oregon. Their spirits selection was equally impressive! We were looking for a couple bottles to bring to dinner. We ended up getting a bottle or Vincent Wengier Chablis and Loriot-Pages Brut Champagne. Impressive place to purchase alcohol! Park in the Makiki Shopping Center and head down the stairs to the appropriately named wine cellar. But, they do not have just wines (a vast and impressive selection of, by the way)! I went to check out their whiskys and whiskeys, of which they have a very good selection of, but not too extensive. You do not go there to buy the cheap stuff, rather to look for something special or unique. Been there a couple times: first time we went the person behind the counter was way too helpful, almost forcing their knowledge on you when it wasn't warranted. The second time was met with a very friendly and non-intrusive but knowledgeable employee, which made me feel better about buying a few bottles of whiskey. Always knew it was here but don't drink alcohol except for certain occasions. Decided to come here and see what they had to offer. I believe the last time I came was for Japanese beer. The place is hidden below street level so do know you have to walk down and back up some stairs. Once you are inside it just opens a beautiful sight of varieties of all types of alcohol. I walked in with whisky in mind. I was approached by a kind lady (sorry I didn't ask her name) but then she realized I needed more help. Here came Dave, who explained so many facets of whisky and the different regions and also the ones that aren't well known but are great! The prices vary so know your budget and ask. They wrapped the bottle of whisky Tullibardine "the Murray" is what was recommended so we shall see how it tastes when my father opens it up. Thank you to the friendly and knowledgeable staff. And not just wines but a great selection of port, single malt proper Whisky, and even mugi soju and sake. You can't go wrong. But don't enter this dignified cellar expecting to find two buck chuck or other low end designer wines that are full of stabilizers and chemical balancers like ménage of the toes. Came here a few times to buy whiskey. I'm not much of a wine drinker, but it appears that they have a huge selection of both wine and liquor. I love smoked or peaty flavored whiskey. Most of my friends had what I love and that just means more me for lol. Anyways, I loooove Laphroaig and I've tried almost everyone that I could find. I don't remember his name because it's not a common name, but he had a strong accent lol. He was crazy knowledgable about my type of whiskeys and recommended a few bottles so I've a few of them at a decent price. Ardberg is another favorite of mines, but he recommended Lagavulin which was also peaty and Oban which wasn't so peaty, but was smooth. I think this store is lucky to have that dude cause he can tell you what they taste like and where it originated from. One of the few places on Oahu with a big selection of fine wine. Spirits are secondary, but also a quality selection. Everyone working there gives off vibes like they own the place in the sense of pride and knowledgeability while also being approachable and down to earth. Now that a friend has started me on collecting bourbon, I've been on the hunt for good and collectable bottles. This shop is surprisingly big once you get inside their cellar location. Though titled as a wine shop, they carry a dizzying amount of spirits as well. Being a bourbon neophyte, I asked the salesperson about several of their bourbon selections and he was very knowledgeable about each label. I settled on the Four Roses single barrel. Although not a unicorn bottle like Blanton's or VanWinkle, the Four Roses single bbl looked like a solid mid-priced choice. There were at least 2 dozen other bourbon to choose from, with some bottles over $100. The salesperson described the ways I could best enjoy it, the drawbacks of higher alcohol bourbon, and the smoothness of it compared to other bourbon. Vintage Wine Cellar is next to Peppa's Korean BBQ. I didn't know this place existed even thought it's the first/oldest in Hawaii, they have some history! The entrance is a little obscure but you'll actually walk down a flight of stairs and you'll land in the wine cellar. They carry not only wine but liquor and some sake. I didn't come here for anything in particular, but I ended up with a bottle of champagne and browsed around. The lady working was really nice and she offered to help me find anything I needed. I like this place! It is a little musty but the selection is really well-curated and the sales people are very knowledgable. We went in to find a nice Italian wine to pair with our vegetarian main course at Thanksgiving and found an incredible selection of some of the best Italian wines you can buy. The selection of French wines is really impressive (although I admit my knowledge of these is in its infancy). The staff are kind and chatty and I like that. I love wine and I love the ability to learn about wine while I'm shopping. The place do to it in Oahu is at Vintage Wine Cellar, and the best part is, nobody is ever there, so you get to shop totally undisturbed! This place has some insane finds, from crappy canned wine to dusty old bottles selling for hundreds. I of course stick mainly to Sonoma and Napa wines, but with the sweet encouragement of my darling husband, we like to try one or two from outside our comfort zone of northern California every time we visit. I've only ever seen an older gentleman and what seems to be his son, working there, and both of them are very knowledgeable and friendly with suggestions. Parking is easy right in front, and for those unlike us with our own wine cellar, they have a giant underground cavern to store your wines. Brilliant move for wine fanatics who can't stand the heat and humidity. Prices are pretty good, just don't get bogged down with the wines right when you walk in from burgundy and such that are in the $200-$700 range...they're interspersed with wines under $100 just the same. The people who work here know their stuff. One of them came over from Hasr the downtown wine shop that has since closed. He is clearly passionate about wine. We got to talking and somehow it came up I had a 2004 J. Moss Cabernet Galleron in my cellar and he actually called the owner of the vineyard in Napa to ask him if it should be drunk sooner rather than later. I had bought the bottle from Hasr more than 15 years ago so I guess that's how he knew him. Still impressive. They have some unusual and obscure bottles. I haven't made a purchase yet just because of their prices. Given their overhead they are fair. However I go to Napa 2-3 times a year. Locally most of my purchases are at R Fields/Foodland when they have killer deals which I combine with the 10% off six mixed bottles. However if you are looking for something thing specific or unavailable anywhere else this is a pretty good place. They have things rarely seen in ANY wine store. For example Obsidian Half Mile which is an incredible Cabernet from Sonoma that I had thought was only for mailing list members direct from the vineyard. read more

People have many similarities to wine. Most but not all get better and more mature with age. There are many different varieties, but not all are palatable. Sweetness is endearing to some, and maddening to others. Quick (mis)judgments are formed based solely on outer appearance. The most expensive aren't always the best. I wasn't impressed at all with this place when I first stumbled in seven years ago. It doesn't look like much from the outside or inside. But back then all I knew about wine was that it came in red or white. Walking in here a few weeks ago I saw this place in a different light. It looks exactly the same, but my blurry ignorance has since been replaced with prescription glasses. This place looked less like a glass bottled mess and more like a treasure trove of old and hard to find wines. Wine newbies are probably better served at friendlier more approachable establishments, but if you know what makes red wine red you'll probably appreciate strolling through this cellar. Staring at the beautiful Barolo section I realized that I'm not quite in the right tax bracket for much of what I desire. Fortunately I've learned to be open to all wines as long as they're good (regardless of color, price, and label) and that should keep me satisfied, at least till my economic compensation catches up with my maturing tastes. Although thinking about it, even if I did one day make some big bucks (not likely at all--I love non profit work) I'd probably still choose value over luxury (eg Toyota even if I could afford Lexus). Who knew a return to a wine shop could be so soul searching? Wonder what I thought seven years ago? Oh that's right I walked in there by accident while looking for the video store. read more
