We have participated in a couple programs sponsored by West Bloomfield Parks & Recreation including…read morelunches and, last year, a Heroes Appreciation Lunch that included veterans and active duty that was held at the Orchard Mall with a buffet lunch and musical entertainment that was nicely done. This year with concerns over the virus and dealing with a more susceptible population of older veterans, They put together a setup for a carry-out bag lunch for veterans and spouses. We signed up and on November 6th we drove to the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation at the Civic Center and found it to be well marked as to where we should go. We first pulled up to check in, then drove to a stop at a tent where our lunches were handed to us, then slowly drove out past a crowd of people including police and fire with their flashing lighted vehicles cheering for us. We then proceeded to the exit and went home to have our lunches which were actually very good: Turkey Club Sandwich, Macaroni Salad, Bag of Chips, Slice of Apple Pie, and a Carton of Milk. They also included a goodie bag with various items. West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation does a great job supporting veterans and seniors and this is just one example of what they do.

Even though we never found the Heron rookery that was the reason we visited, we much enjoyed our…read morevisit, quietly walking along woodland trails lined with abundant woodland hyacinth, woodland anemone, and wild geranium. Grand Circus Park back to Judge Augustus B. Woodward's master plan to rebuild Detroit after the…read more1805 devastating fire. The park was meant to be a full circle - the "circus" the name - but rising land values north of Adams Street led property owners to resist selling, leaving the park as a half-moon bisected by Woodward Avenue. It links Detroit's theater district to its financial core, and over the decades, it has hosted everything from presidential eulogies to public protests. In fact, General George Armstrong Custer once delivered a eulogy there for Abraham Lincoln before thousands of mourners. The park is adorned with statuary and fountains that speak to Detroit's civic pride. The eastern half features the Russell Alger Memorial Fountain, designed by Henry Bacon (who also designed the Lincoln Memorial), with a Roman allegorical figure sculpted by Daniel Chester French. Nearby stands the statue of Mayor William Cotter Maybury. The western half is anchored by the Edison Memorial Fountain and the statue of Mayor Hazen Pingree, a populist reformer whose legacy still looms large. It's a layered space - literally, as there are parking garages below - with memorials and a green park. Plenty of benches and tables and a free wifi. This is quite an interesting areas of downtown Detroit. I was in town and strolling around to get…read moresome exercise before turning in for the evening. It's one of my favorite things to do when I'm visiting a city other than my own. I never know what I'm going to find and as for this park, I just happened to run into it. At first glance I didn't even realize it was a park. I noticed a few empty water fountains, a couple statues, a bike share station, and there wasn't much landscaping or anything. I'm not sure if it was just the timing of my visit or what, but it came across rather dreary. I'm not sure if I would describe it as grand but considering the location, I get the circus part. It is completely surrounded by traffic and there's restaurants, theaters, and a lot of other things to do nearby. In a way, that's a circus all on its own. Would I intentionally come back to this park? Probably not, but I can always appreciate some greenery in the middle of a concrete jungle. It's good for the soul.

It's a great place to view the Gordie Howe Bridge, but it is closed in the winter, opening in April. The confusion is with the Delray Community Center at 420 S Leigh St. That is NOT Delray Park. Eliza Howell Park is a public park in the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit. According to its…read morewebsite, the park is made up of 250 acres of preserved land in the flood plain of the Rouge River and has over two miles of hiking trails I visited the park for the first time to participate in a walking tour with a local non-profit. This park has so much potential if only the city invested more funds in its upkeep and landscaping. I thought my vehicle would be swallowed up by the huge potholes around the parking lot. I noticed some trash on my walk. I was told that the park was closed for a while and volunteers from the local community brought this park back to life. It's a very beautiful place for a nature walk and I hope that more is done to restore the park to its former glory.
