Virginia ABC Store - Pernod & Ricard - we keep both, we drink both & both prefer the Ricard but hubs will drink the Pernod to save the Ricard for me...awww!

I do have an ABC store two minutes away but if I drive three more minutes, I can go to this…read morelocation. The one closer to me is fine, but it is a bit of an older store. That being said, this one always has French pastis in stock & on the shelf; Pastis is similar to Italian Sambuca or Greek Ouzo but not quite the same, lol. Sambuca is made from elderberries, Ouzo is made from distilled grapes & aniseed, & Pastis is made from anise, star anise & fennel. The store only has Pernod, which we do like, but you can special order Ricard, which is mine & my French hubs preference; they are from the same company & are both anise-flavored spirits that have their roots in absinthe, but they taste different enough from each other. Pernod is the closet to Absinthe & the company, Pernod-Ricard does, in fact, make real absinthe as well. Look up the history, it's actually an interesting story of how Pastis came about. But I digress, lol. Pastis is an anise-flavored apéritif, or apéro as the French call it, & it is a digestif (aides in digestions). It is typically drank before a meal & served over a couple ice cubes & diluted with water so that it becomes beautifully cloudy & almost a golden, iridescent yellow. Pernod is made from distillates of star anisé (on of my fave spices), fennel, & 14 other botanicals such as coriander, mint, chamomile, & Veronica to name a few. Pernod has a low licorice content which sets it apart from Ricard, which has a more pronounced licorice flavor I must say the staff here is super friendly & the female manager is the best; she always has a big smile on her face. FYI ~ if you want liquor in VA you must purchase it from the ABC store aka Alcohol & Beverage Control Authority.

I have pulled up there 15 minutes to close before and gotten shooed away by an employee with locked doors. How is that acceptable? That has happened on multiple occasions. This store is fairly new and I can't believe I hadn't checked it out earlier. Upon entering, it was super spacious and had several huge advertisements from brands... even a huge Moscow Mule cup and a huge purple Kings chair by non other than Crown Royal lol. I got my bottle (pineapple vodka, easy to find) and headed to the register to purchase. At the register I noticed that they had an event listing for the store, events such as free alcohol, can you say win!!! The two guys that were working were really nice and even laughed when I joked about the black guy being named Bic (which wasn't his name but what I thought I heard) it reminded me of Kevin Harts movie where he chose the name Bic Mitchum. Nonetheless, this will be my go to store from now on and I will be lurking so that I can make it to some of those free events lol.

This…read moreparticular location is a stand-alone store, which is rare because they are usually in strip malls. A brief history according to Virginiaplaces.org states that after Prohibition ended, Virginia authorized retail stores to sell beer and wine but retained direct control over the sale of hard liquor. The General Assembly set up what is today the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Authority and gave it the exclusive right to sell hard liquor directly to the public. So, this is where you go to get your spirits of choice. They are small but well stocked stores and they often have sales. If there is something you want that is not on the shelf you can do a special order & they will get it in for you, even for just one bottle. The staff is always friendly and helpful & the store is always clean & stocked. What could be better! Cheers!

When having to gift liquor to my Scotch Irish relatives, obviously booze goes good. Yet if I can't get into DC or Maryland, I'll be paying more here. It is patently ridiculous and against capitalism. Reposting my Google review because there aren't very many recent reviews since UnWined's change in…read moreownership in 2025. TLDR: it's a mess and former customers are concerned. The best word I can use to describe my shopping experience at UnWined as of late is "undignified". I question whether the new owner is actually interested in curating an interesting wine and beer selection for both the novice & educated consumer or if she's just using this storefront as a personal playground with no interest in serving the customers of this established business. In the year since the new owner has taken over, I have seen full-time staff members get fired and replaced with 19 year old part-timers, I have seen the most ridiculous events being advertised that have barely anything to do with wine, and I have seen the most unprofessional behavior happening on the store floor that makes me feel like I'm walking on eggshells (e.i. the owner yelling at customers, flipping out about a broken water heater, getting upset over missing shipments). During the weekends, the entire store feels like a circus with the owner's friends peddling their mediocre goods, and shopping for wine in a relaxed way feels nearly impossible...it's hard to do anything when someone named DJ Thunder Bunny is playing her set, someone is selling you their gluten-free bread in front of the French wine section, and there's a dog adoption drive happening all at the same time. A lot of people, including myself, have just stopped shopping here because it's such an uncomfortable experience now. I hope things change, but I'm not feeling particularly optimistic since the owner has only doubled down on the cringey events. Despite all my negative feedback, I want to give a shoutout to Sparlan. He's a delight to talk to!
