Just had a lovely experience here with immense help from Miss Jeffries and several additional staff members that sorted out a complicated DL renewal. They kept thanking me for my patience but they were the patient ones, having to deal with whatever tricky system issues they ran into. Props to them all! Automated check in for online appointments is very easy--you get a text reminder of your appointment when you make it online, you reply to that number with "check in" 15 minutes before your appointment, it texts you back with a ticket number, then you sit and wait til your ticket number comes up. The waiting area got quite cold as they had an industrial a/c running, so wear layers in summer/extreme heat times. The only recommendation I have is that it would be great to have some instructions posted next to the machine that you put your face/eyes on to take your eye test, both for how to do the test/use the machine and to sanitize it after each use. If the person instructing you isn't speaking loudly, it's hard to hear what you're supposed to do. read more

First of all, make an online appointment! This is truly the best way to get in and out of the DMV in record time. Show up 15 minutes prior and scan the QR code at the entrance. Take a seat and you will be called fairly quickly. We were called a few minutes prior to our actual appointment time. Use the online information ahead of time to have the proper documents with you. The customer service agent who helped me to get my 84 year old father his drivers license was knowledgeable, fast, and kind. We both left feeling accomplished without spending forever waiting. I recommend this DMV at 850 Widgeon Rd in Norfolk, VA to everyone I meet locally. I've gone here two times to get my VA real ID with my new last name. Each time I didn't have a prior appointment but was able to be helped quickly through the walk-in line. The first time I visited, I had all my necessary documents except for my passport/birth certificate but the person that helped me was kind about it. It's awful and frustrating when you have to wait at a DMV for an hour plus and then are rudely told you don't have all the necessary documents and are dismissed. Fortunately, there was none of that at this DMV. Each time I went, I stood in the walk-in line for about 15 minutes max and was helped at a booth by a kind employee. The second time, I came back with all my documents and was in-and-out within an 1 and 15 minutes. The staff is friendly and their system for helping people is effective and organized. read more

Amazing customer service! Despite some of the bad reviews posted, I had an excellent experience here! I think it's much better now that they are doing appointments. They also take walk-ins, but they have plenty of appointments open. I came in early and got finished with my transaction by the time my actual appointment was scheduled for. Lucky for me this DMV isn't as retro as the ones that I'm used to going to. However I had to go back home to get documents I needed for an ID because I didn't know I needed a passport or birth certificate. I should've known! I was frustrated when I came back because there was a long line, but the line moved quickly. I got all the way up to my letter/number being called just to learn that I needed two paper forms of proof of residence in order to get a Real ID. The guy who was helping me was really patient, resourceful, and kind though which was refreshing. He helped me to schedule an appointment online for next week. As a longtime Norfolk resident, I remember dreading visits to this DMV, knowing it would be 2 hours of my life I'd never recoup for seemingly remedial tasks. Some aspects have improved but some things remain unchanged. Arrived on Tuesday at 440p to register my daughter's vehicle. I researched required info online beforehand; gathered, completed and brought it with me (VA title, drivers license, bill of sale). Immediately corralled into an information line upon entry (there's an express line for simple things). There, after waiting your turn, you're given a number related to your task, then instructed to wait for it to be called. I was F137, the main monitors showed F130 being served. Waited over 45 minutes before a supervisor came out, noticed me sitting there forever, asked me what I needed, asked me my number, then asked an employee not taking numbers if she was still on the clock. She indeed was, so I finally got the "service" I should have received way earlier, when she saw me sitting there in the nearly empty waiting room. I was polite and warm but she said very little, clearly bothered that I was there. Charged me 100% personal property on what should have been prorated (Sept purchase), especially since the previous owner already paid it for the year. I brought this up but she said "umm, that's the fee." 25 minutes and $140 later, on a 2001 vehicle, I was able to leave but had to exit out of side doors since all others locked at 5p. Not 2 hours but definitely 70 minutes of my life I won't get back. Necessary evil.... read more

made an appointment for janaf Dmv in norfolk for real id.all I had to do was check in on my phone.per my info on my paperwork.Signed in got a number waited my turn.The lady behind the counter was so rude.Asked me was I privileged to be able to go ahead of all these people already sitting here waiting on their real id.I was just doing what my paperwork and phone told me to do.all my paperwork was filled out on line.and I also had a copy with me.which said all I do is do a self check in get a number and sit till your number is called.exactly what I did.why do they all have such bad attitudes at this location.My son went 2 days before me for the same thing .and they took him with no problem.She told me I needed to go get in line.I told her what my phone and email told me to do and she didnt care one bit.so I left without my real id.This dmv really needs some adjustments towards customer service at this location..and not once did I get out of line with her.But she remained rude.and angry saying I jumped ahead of everyone else.I had 3 o clock appointment.It was 3:45 and I was still waiting without a problem.My number was called that they sent me on my phone.and thats when her attitude came in. read more

I mean really? Who wakes up in the morning and says, "I can't wait to go to the DMV today!". Like myself, most remember the long waits from the past. I think the DMV has gotten better though. This location is right off of I64, and easy to find. It was organized and clean. The parking is ok, but no DMV has enough parking when its packed. The customer flow was efficient. If you are there for quick routine services, there is an express line. The express line services are listed on the board behind the counter. There weren't many customers when I visited, but I thought my wait was just a little longer than expected. However, all the representatives were friendly. Everyone seemed to enjoyed being at work that day. read more

I came here on Saturday morning to register a '92 Jeep Wrangler... was in and out in about an hour, maybe less. HANDS DOWN THE BEST service I have ever seen at a motor vehicle establishment. These people are shining examples of civil servants, polite and helpful the whole way through. If you have a problem with them, it probably was caused by you. If you treat these people with a bit of decency I can guarantee you it will go a long way here. read more

Saturday morning at the DMV doesn't sound fun does it? I'd so much rather be sleeping in, not dragging a cranky 5 year old to stand in line outside at 730. That's right 730am on a Saturday. Mommy is mean. Was there to title, register, and plate a vehicle. Printer on the fritz so I had to get the paperwork and fill it all out. Employees working were cheery and helpful. What?! That's why I like this location besides the hours. I've never had a bad experience with employees here. Be respectful and friendly chances are you'll get that in return. Guess who was in and out, not counting pre-opening time, by 815am? ME! Thanks DMV for having 2 lines, one regular and one express, and a whole slew of employees ready to help. The DMV won't put your name in a line when the representative is on the phone. All it tells you is go to the web sight. Then will hang up on that person. That person will have to keep calling all day if they need to ask a question over the phone. read more

Meh. It's the DMV. I'm sitting in here as a type this and as usual it's packed. But I came in here a few weeks ago at around 4:30 pm and no one was in here so that worked out perfectly. The customer service is a hit or miss. Some of the cashiers are friendly while others are not. It's at least clean in here and they seem to be moving efficiently. Keep in mind you can check the wait times online before coming in. read more

Due to customer service closures at Hampton, Smithfield, and Poquoson ; and having a relatively short timeframe to replace my driver's license, I set out Early Saturday to cross HRBT and be at the Widgeon road office when the doors opened. I arrived at 0750; about 35 folks ahead of me. Walked back out at 0835, business completed. All told, trip there and back was 1 1/2 hours-faster than getting a number at Hampton site the last time I was there. Anyone who needs to go to the DMV most likely isn't thrilled for their upcoming visit. I needed to go to switch my drivers license to a Virginia license since I will be stationed here longer. The gps took me to this location instead of the one I looked at online which opened at 8:00. I arrived at the location at 7:40 to see two people already forming a line. When I walked up I saw that this location doesn't open until 9:00, the first lady in line said that if I came back when the opened there would be a long wait, and suggested I just wait. So I waited until they opened at 9:00. Once they opened the staff was very quick to get people directed to the correct places and get their ticketed numbers. Because I was the third in line I only waited maybe 5 minutes before being seen. I had already filled out my application online and had all of my documentation so the process was very quick. The lady who assisted me was very friendly and quick. I did have to wait an extra 30 minutes after she finished my application for the DMV to verify my license from another state but besides that I had no issues at this location. The location was also very clean and had enough seating for the many people that were there at the moment they opened. Many people complain about the long wait times or unfriendly staff but remember this. Prepare for your visit! Look online first to ensure you are bringing the proper documentation so the lines can go fast and you are not turned away. Also be kind to the workers there, they see a large number of people every day, and being rude to them doesn't expedite the process. read more

Very bad service center. They don't have good employees working. Very slow plus some of the employees don't have any idea of certain cases. They just ask you to come back without giving a solution. Also one time they had to fax a document and i had to wait for an hour but when i went after an hour the other associate told me that fax was never sent to Richmond office. I really didn't even use their services , security was very over the top maybe because of the area. I was dropping my 3 year old off to her babysitter and I came in to give her a fruit snack. One I have not actually visited this location or dealt with the staff (I'm standing outside writing this) and two because the phone and website say they open at 8am but the sign on the doors says 9am... Went to this dmv because they had the soonest spot for a road drivers license test. My appointment was at 9:15, went in 10 min early just for my appointment to actually start at 10:15. Once I started my test I realized none of it was going to be on an actual road. So I just had to do simple task. I failed once i got to the u turn task. Instructor told me to make a u turn at the cone. I asked which cone it was to specify being that there were multiple cones ahead. Instructor told me to drive on the right side then make the turn while also stating "you'll know what to do once you get there." So I proceeded when I was told to do so. I was driving on the correct side of the road because really there was only one road in the back of the dmv but she started yelling telling me to go on the right, then I realized she wanted me to pretend the parking spots were the "right side" of the road. I was so conflicted I didn't even realize there was a stop sign because I was to focused and confused on what side she wanted me on. She stopped my test and it was an automatic fail just for that. They say we can wait 3 days before taking the test again but really it takes a month or two to get another appointment. If I ever go to this dmv again I'd definitely want a different instructor who is specific and clear with their instructions. read more

If you can have a good experience, it is here. Got through the line quickly enough, have several transactions to get done and were compete within an hour. The folks were very polite, funny, and helpful (it was early in the day) so that made it nice. Although I have no idea how exactly their number system really works, it seems to move relatively well, so cheers!!! Not going to say go visit, or just swiing in if you have the chance, but if you have to go to the DMV, at least it isn't as bad as it used to be!! read more

So if I could give the information desk, the manager lady, and my road test guy 5 stars I would. I gave 4 stars because some of the people at the work stations are so rude! I get that some of them are quite young, but one young lady talked to this boy the WHOLE time and didn't even look at me ONCE. Then she gave me a hard time about my married last name (I hadn't changed it with social security yet), but the manager had told me to come back during the week and they could connect it. She was about to turn me away after being so rude, but the manager remembered me and came up and asked what the problem was. Guess what?!? She told the girl how to do her job. Then I watched her for 15 minutes trying to figure out how to send a fax of my social security card and ID. I understand that it's a learning process, but seriously. That situation could've easily been WAY WORSE had the manager not remembered me. Thank goodness! And because they clearly have competent and kind people there I will not give them less than 4 stars because a few are unwilling to be helpful. I know the service industry is frustrating, heck I wouldn't want to work at the DMV, but come on! My road test guy wasn't talkative at all, but he took me on a simple drive around the neighborhood. I think I made one mistake and if he was awful he could've failed me but he didn't. He strikes me as the type of person who has seen and done it all, HAHA! If you are in need of taking your road test I would definitely schedule it here. Make an appointment by calling the main DMV phone number or you may not be seen if you just show up. You may have to wait, but it is way better. All in all to get my driver's permit it took about 1 hour (waiting + test). Because I had to come back to get my correct name issued on my permit that took an additional 1.5 hours (this was because everything was already closed and they couldn't connect my name with the SS office). My road test wait + test took about 1.5 hours. read more

Wrong, 2 hours later I inquire as to how long it might be as I have been waiting for a very long time and will need to return to work soon. The woman that I spoke with was very rude, simply stating, 'I'm sorry sir, you'll just have to wait until your number is called'. I get that ma'am but don't you think I could've at least gotten an eta? Or perhaps not have to wait all over again when I have to leave because of work.
