This review is for Dr. William Immel, the gastroenterologist that has been treating me for 25+ years. With an ovarian and endometrial cancer diagnosis thirty-eight years ago with a surgery five years later due to adhesions causing an intestinal blockage and with another cancer 17 years ago, Dr. Immel is an amazing physician. After listening to my symptoms, he calmly advises and provides medical advise that I trust. Since a doctor visit is not routine for me and by the time of an appointment with Dr. Immel, I have worked myself into a small frenzy. With my complications, Dr, Immel's empathy and my trust with him is most reassuring. Even when a different doctor suggested a Colostomy bag about five years ago, Dr. Immel recommended that this not be a solution with a different approach recommended. I send my greatest gratitude and best wishes to Dr. Immel as he retires. He has assured me that he has mentored Dr. Dennis Nguyen for the past ten years as his clone. I set an appointment for a colonoscopy for a friday with the consultation the Thursday a week prior. My wife entered the hospital the Wednesday prior to my consult. I discussed it with the doctor. Unfortunately, my wife had an emergency surgery Sunday prior to the Friday appointment. I called Monday morning to reschedule vs waiting til the last moment. The person I spoke to was rude and condensing when I explained the situation. Wanted to charge a cancelation fee of $500. The paperwork I signed clearly stated the appointment was able to be canceled for a medical emergency for myself or immediate family. When I explained what the papers I signed stated , I was told I had to cancel for a medical emergency a week in advance, not sure how to do that, it was an emergency. I canceled entire appointment due to the unprofessional treatment I received. I would not recommend. read more

Administration stinks. I cancelled an appointment almost a week ago, and I just got an automated message telling me of the appointment again. Quality: I don't know recent level, but when we went to a doctor in this practice many years ago, I had to force him to stay with me more than 10 minutes to answer my questions. My husband went for a check-up one time, and as the doctor looked at my husband's chart, he said, "You have sickle-cell anemia." Then he looked up (finally) at my husband and saw that he couldn't possibly have sickle-cell anemia because he is not black. So - the doctor is at fault for not paying attention to my husband and his chart, and the administration again is at fault for making grave filing errors. For grades, I'd give them a C for quality and an F for administration. read more

This place is stuck in the dark ages. They have a patient portal but it's only used to share medical reports. In order to make any appointments or ask any questions you have to call and you will wait on hold anywhere between 5-30 minutes to speak with nurses who are rude and seem annoyed by having to do their jobs. The front desk people are the same. They also do not respond when CVS contacts them to get permission to refill prescriptions so you have to call and wait on hold forever anytime you need a prescription refill. If you have questions about test results you have to call (wait on hold forever) and then talk to the nurse who will just read the report you already have read and then she will tell you that she will have to ask the doctor. Then they call back but if another question comes up it's the same process. The doctor rarely ever calls for anything. The final nail in the coffin for me was calling this week to ask them to send an order for my mammogram and ultrasound. Not only did they not fax it to the radiologist as promised, i drove to the practice and I got an order for a mammogram and a bone density scan (I'm only 45) and no ultrasound. All staff who could possibly help me had already left even though they didn't technically close for another half hour. I will not be returning to this practice. read more

I went here last week for a physical after a break of a few years. Sarah Johns and her nurse Kevin are wonderful! However, dealing with other office staff I just get attitude and rudeness. Is it actually legal to charge someone for lab results?? They wouldn't give them to me over the phone and insisted I set up a virtual visit (with another appt fee) for the results. If this is the way they conduct business, I will never go back there. I think this is a very shady way of giving lab results and possibly illegal. read more

This review is for Dr. Seema Sharma. I've been going to this practice for 15 years and my primary care physician has changed 4 times now (some good and some bad, including one who fat-shamed me), but Dr. Sharma is fantastic. I never feel rushed when I go in and she really takes the time to listen to my concerns and answer my questions. I hope she sticks around for years to come. Also, the physicians assistants have been solid as well and one helped me to diagnose my hypothyroidism several years ago (which coincidentally explained some of my weight gain after being fat-shamed by my primary care doctor). I know there have been some complaints about front desk staff, but they always seem swamped. I feel like they need to at least hire another person. read more

Dr Singh is the nicest and most caring primary doctor. When I have labs or other tests she calls and tells me the results. I took my mother n law in for an ongoing medical issue and Ms Kennedy PA waisted no time getting my mother n law the help she needed. Ms. Kennedy PA was kind and understanding . I now understand the poor ratings for this doctor's office. Let me start by saying my doctor seems very good and cares about my health. He is a straight shooter, which I like and need in a healthcare provider. Unfortunately for doctors everywhere, I would argue that the healthcare system in the United States is not ideal. Instead of focusing on the best care available, we are forced to focus on who and what is covered by our insurance. Issues of pricing and access come into play. Etc. The primary reason this practice gets poor reviews is due to the front desk staff. At best they are helpless and at worst they're incompetent. Here is one example of why I say that: I called to schedule a follow up appointment. "When did your doctor want to see you for the follow-up?" they asked. "He didn't say. And he recently changed my medication, so he may want to get blood work done before I come in. Can you check my chart?" They claimed there was nothing in my chart about the follow-up or medication change. I'm guessing that's not true (incompetent), but maybe it is (helpless). If you can get past the front desk issues, there are some good healthcare providers in this practice. Good luck! read more

Great Doctors, wonderful Practitioners, great answering service when calling for appt. HOWEVER; THE FRONT DESK, NOT SO MUCH!!! The front desk staff can't wait to give you the answer.... before you can finish asking your question!!! I wish they could slow down a bit and be a bit more patient. Importantly, Pls Get off texting on my personal phone, this is how mistakes happened to me and this mistake has wasted my time off work and cost me more $ for the incomplete procedure! I believe if people don't like their jobs, they should leave! there are always others who can that job! Since the Pandemic, people are burnout these days from date-to-date jobs, including doctors and nurses. Terrible experience. I had to wait 6 weeks in significant pain for my visit and the doctor took one look at me and diagnosed me as overweight and constipated. Once I went to a different practice to find someone who would actually listen to me it turned out I have severe gastritis, a hiatal hernia, and possible further complications because of waiting so long to get properly diagnosed. When I spoke to the office manager she said I just needed to get their bill paid before they sent it to collections. No care whatsoever for the misdiagnosis. I realize they aren't going to care about this review but I hope it will save other people the time, money, and frustration. read more

Very insulted by person answering the phones and the pre-authorization person. They talk to you without respect. I tell them I am out of town on a family emergency and had to stay longer than expected. I needed to get more medical and now on the third day and still don't have the meds. Today they tell me it could be 72 more hours. They are cold hearted and don't care. I am here because a family member is on life support due to complications from COVID and I get "listen to what I am saying" I have been going to VMA for over 30 years and the service I get from the people over the phone is insulting. When I get back home I will be filing a complaint directly with the managing doctor. read more

As many of the other reviewers have experienced, the nurses and receptionists are INCREDIBLY RUDE. It's as if you are interrupting their game of solitaire or something whenever you call them. And good luck getting them to call you back. I was in AGONY from a herniated disc and called begging for an MRI referral. I waited...and waited. I finally called them again and waited some more. But it's not just the nurses and receptionists - it's also the doctor. He seems to know/remember little about his patients' history (does he even look at their file before appointments?). I met with him twice in a two week period about back pain, and in the second visit he asked me the same questions (and got the same answers) that he did in the first visit. He seemed to have no recollection of the first visit. Then upon speaking to him a third time two weeks later, he again seemed to have no recollection of what my symptoms were. Back to the MRI - after FINALLY getting a referral I went and had the exam. Then I called VMA to see if Dr. would want me to come in and discuss it/get the results. Their response was basically "don't call us, we'll call you." Great, more waiting, I thought. And that's just what I did - I waited... and waited some more. Finally after several more days of EXCRUCIATING hernia pain I called them and asked if the doc had seen the results yet. FINALLY Dr. called me and asked "do you have pain down your left side" - um you mean the same pain down my left side that I've told you and your nurses about over and over? Then he was like "uh yeah you should probably see a surgeon immediately about that" - YA THINK? IS THAT WHY I'VE BEEN ON THE FLOOR IN PAIN THIS WHOLE WEEK WHILE I'VE BEEN WAITING?! GEE THANKS FOR TAKING TIME OUT OF YOUR BUSY WEEK TO GET BACK TO ME. I guess the Dr., though a nice enough guy (unlike nurses/receptionists), is just too busy, and maybe that's the problem with the nurses and receptionists also. If they're too busy for me, they'll likely be too busy for you. read more

I wanted to switch doctors because my last practice did not have any board certified internists. Thank you to my Aetna provider search, I was able to find this group. They are in Springfield, but just a quick 10 minute drive from Burke. The location is kinda weird, they are in a cluster of row houses/buildings behind a Shell gas station, don't trust google maps or a GPS, just trust me when I say you need to drive past the Shell station and onto the street with office buildings that look like town homes. Parking is easy, lots of it around the buildings. The office itself is on the second level. The front desk staff is great! Both guys that I encountered were polite, kind and attentive. I met my doctor's nurse and she was fantastic! First impressions are always key to my happiness, especially at a doctor's office. The doctor came in shortly after my initial visit with the nurse. I had heard that this doctor was very smart. She was very thorough, asked lots of questions, and went straight to the point about options for my care. I always appreciate a provider who is straight up and honest. I know they are busy and I am just as busy. I appreciate that I don't have to sit in a doctor's waiting room for long amounts of time because all the appointments are backed up. That was always the case with my last doctor's office. In summary, I was greeted in a friendly and helpful manner. The nurse and the doctor were on point with my issues. I'm not sure if this will always be the case, but my first impression left a good one. read more

If you're looking for unprofessional service, like getting gaffed off and ignored, not listened to, given the run around, receiving no call backs, being put on hold, and being hung up on while they "transfer you", oh and being made to feel like you're a bother to them....sign up as a patient at Virginia Medical Alliance. I had signed up for new insurance and need to pick a new primary care doctor to get " a referral to see my dermatologist" I already knew which dermatologist I wanted to see had the name, address, and phone number all written out. I was charged 350.00 as a "new complex patient" I understand doctors need to get paid but 350.00 is ridiculous for me to walk in and ask for a referral when I already have the information. We only came here for a general check up BUT I sit here in the waiting room I can only tell You that the receptionists are a shit show. Specifically Diana. A. Her mask is not covering her nose B. Didn't acknowledge us as we stood in front of her for 3 minutes while her and her colleague argued about who was going to the meeting. Looked up at us twice but did not say a word. Not a hello. Not a we'll be right with you. C. A lady who was waiting in her car for a Covid test comes in bc she couldn't call due to a phone system update. She was pretty pissed and slightly rude. The receptionist handles it well BUT then gets on the phone with her friend to complain about the customer. Mind you there are 3 of us in the waiting room and can hear her. She's complaining in Spanish so assumes we can't understand, but I can. After she finishes complaining, she then loudly tells her friend to text her bc she always leaves her on read. D. The nurses just beyond the waiting room can also be overheard complaining about customers and how dumb they are when they describe what car they're in. E. I'm in the service industry. Yes we complain about customers, but customers should not hear any of this. They need to understand that they're doing their jobs and personal tasks in front of customers and leaving a really bad impression. This has been over a 10 min. period. read more

I have been going to VMA for years now and have only had good experiences. They have knowledgeable doctors who care and take the time with patients. I see negative reviews are all tied to receptionists/office staff. I have always been able to call and get an appointment, but I think the bigger point is that they have really good medical staff and that's what matters the most. I feel compelled to give this place a review after I checked out yelp the day before my first appointment and all the negative reviews made me nervous... however I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, I had to wait for about 15 minutes after my appt time to be seen but that is pretty typical for me at all dr offices plus Dr. Audrey Thornberg apologized for the wait which I appreciated. This place is horrible. It used to be so great, and the staff used to be professional and nice. I called a week ago for a med refill (that was supposed to be done already because I literally saw my doctor a month ago and asked for them to add refills), and the nurse was talking to a coworker WHILE I was on the phone. It's now been a week and I'm out of medication. To top it off, I called several times today (normal office hours/day time) just to get a tone on the other end, like the phone is out of order or something? It's sad, because the doctor I see is so caring and nice, but the staff is awful. Super unprofessional and make you feel like an inconvenience. Like...if you don't enjoy your job...go get a new one. After about 25 years we have walked away. Dr. Oshrey who my husband trusted immensely treated him like a second class citizen because he did not take the vaccine, the experiment vaccine. 2 physical appointments and both times berated. Never once was he given informed consent. Never. Only referred to as stupid. My husband's blood work clearly showed a spike in PSA in April and a few other things. He called the only to have a nurse call and say all was fine. He called 3 times and Dr.Oshrey never returned any calls. None. Many weeks later a referral came in the mail to a urologist. Guess what, there is a huge issue per MRI. And the blood work was the first indication, 100% ignored. I know Dr. Oshrey is sick of telling people to take the jab as he made it very clear to my husband last appointment. He has already had Covid and is not interested in the vax. No informed consent, bullying and a clear dereliction, of duty, much less a clear violation of do no harm. Was he discriminating and withholding treatment because someone made a personal choice about taking a vaccine that is still experimental? That answer is yes, otherwise is absolutely incompetence. Should have run away long ago, the referral girl never sent the referrals, never. Complained about that and they acknowledged it and gave a person above her to contact. This is a huge lawsuit coming, Dr.Oshrey I would think long and hard, about what you said to your patients And how you treated them. We won't stand for your discrimination and failure to uphold your oath. Consider this notice. Crimes against humanity. No return call ever, none. 3 calls and no return call ever. Unfortunately this is not a positive review. I recently had my annual check up by Dr. Sarah Jones. She is a very pleasant person but during my visit she was rushing through. The fact that I had to remind Dr. Jones about paps smear check makes me think that she didn't really want to spend her time for this important part of any woman's annual check up or perhaps she is not competent with this procedure. It happened that my last exam was 4 years ago and nevertheless after my reminder, Dr. Jones got confused and quickly responded that the exam is not due for another year. I didn't want to be impolite and didn't say anything. The true professional in this place is Victoria Currall but because she is so good it's hard to schedule an appointment with her. Unfortunately my recent visit will be most likely the last one as I'm thinking to change the care provider. Also, this place definitely needs a makeover. read more

The receptionist are EXTREMELY rude. They act like you are wasting their time and are incredibly short with you for no reason. The doctors' bedside manner are horrific and it's impossible to get a simple prescription refill without getting into a whole mess with the entire office. I also had a terrible experience twice with them not calling me back about important test results that I need some explaining on. Had an appt today here at. 10am. I showed up at 9:50am with all my new patient paperwork filled out. As I'm sitting there waiting and waiting, i saw a few patients who came in after me, already seen and done with their appt I don't know what time I finally made it into the exam room, but at 11:10am I finally decided to get dressed and walk out. I had my two toddlers with me and I can only keep them calm for so long. The staff and nurses are really nice and friendly but not a single person apologized for or acknowledged being an hour behind schedule. And lastly, I always like to comment on the atmosphere of the places I review. It did not help that the office feels like a dark basement with barely any light. And the exam room felt more like a storage closet. On my way out, I passed by the Dr's office and I noticed he was sitting at his desk talking on the phone, which only fueled my frustration. ***revised: I did receive a voicemail from the Dr. apologizing for being behind schedule, and he also mentioned his phone call was an emergency call. Odd physical location. You will have to do a double take following the GPS to this location. The office itself is old and outdated and I definitely met friendlier staff working the reception area. No greetings coming in and I'm awkwardly waiting for them to finish their conversation with each other before I can get a word in that I have an appointment. The nurses and doctors are more polite and friendly. The main reason I would come back to this practice is due to the convenience of the location from my home. I would go somewhere else for anything more serious than a cold/flu or annual check ups. read more

To be honest, I think that 3.5 stars is the right ranking for this office, but alas, yelp says that's not a choice, so below is my ranking breakdown: I have been seeing Hillary Schmidt, PA for probably 3 or 4 years now. She takes her time and works to diagnose the issue. I don't feel rushed or that my voice isn't being heard. I would give her four stars if I could rate her individually. The front desk staff is cold and unwelcoming and I always feel like I am bothering them. I would appreciate a little warmth from them and a little explanation sometimes. I think they are a two star operation The office has a lab on the first floor. I am so appreciative of the convenience of not having to visit the local LabCorp (shudder). The service there is usually pretty snappy; I haven't waited more than 20 minutes. And the staff have been kind. I think I would rate that 3-4 stars. I have never had an issue finding parking here. The doctor I saw for a physical examination was friendly. He did not rush through the evaluation. My main complaint is VMA does not assist you in any way if you need blood work, a urine test, etc. Instead they will refer you to an ouside lab, such as Labcorp. As a result, you will need to schedule another visit at the diagnostics center and spend an additional hour waiting in-line for the nurse to call your name. My recommendation: find an office that will do all the lab work for you. read more

I agree with the other comments about the nurses and receptionists being less than courteous, however, I continue to go here because I like my Doctor. I used to be able to use the lab downstairs (which was great, the wait sometimes was long, but they are so nice down there), but unfortunately my insurance changed and now I have to go to a separate lab. I've been a patient for several years, and I used to see another Doctor who has since left the practice. I have seen some of the other physicians, and continue to see the P.A. here. all in all, the Doctors are good, they know what they are doing, but sometimes the staff is a little gruff. read more
