The office staff/receptionists, however, are too often rude and seem resentful at having to answer the phone and help patients. As far as their 'Boutique," however, I purchased a really expensive pair of glasses. After wearing them a couple of days, I found they were a defective design--the cross bar protruded radically onto the lens, visible in your line of sight constantly. I was told to wear them and try to get used to it. Unable to, I was put through hell getting a refund even when the office manager acknowledged the defect--and I was 'banned' by letter from ever entering their 'Boutique' as punishment. From poor service by the Boutique, to failure to stand by their product, to trying to humiliate their clients.

That perfectly describes the U.C. Davis Eye Center's optometry shop--they are situated in the U.C. Davis Medical Group building and receive a steady stream of business from the practitioners in that building--although they do not damage the business of the practitioners, they do not benefit them either. Why would anyone choose UC Davis Eye Center's optometry shop? It's not because of their prices, which are on par with any shopping mall optometry store. It's not because of their selection, which is on par with any shopping mall optometry store. It's not because of their customer service, which is on par with a resentful ex-lover serving you in a job that they already hate but can't afford to leave (ok, In fairness, people can do their job well even if they hate their work and hate you). It's also not because they're quick--plan to spend triple the time you would otherwise expect for any transaction. It's because they're there---location. Guess what, optometry shop? You need your customers more than they need you--so get your butts in gear, answer your darn phone, call me back the same day if I leave a message, call me when my prescription arrives like you said you would, hire more people to work the store so I'm not waiting for an hour to be serviced every time I go in, and don't screw up my order so I have to go through the process twice. Either that, or lower your prices so I can justify putting up with your shop. You clearly scored a great location, because there's no other explanation for how you've managed to stay in business, but even if you can't respect your customers enough to give them decent service, have some respect for yourselves. Nonetheless, I give this shop two stars because (1) they've never stolen anything from me and (2) the last time that I visited, they seemed to have extra people on staff, none of whom were in a bad mood, so I'm hopeful that they are making changes. I'll reassess them again the next time that I'm in and upgrade/downgrade appropriately.

When I went to check out and…read moreget my date for cataract surgery, I was shocked and irritated to hear I owed $45 per eye, $90, for the drops given before the examination. That money I had set aside for Christmas presents. I didn't know about that before the appointment. I turned my face away, said, "This is 'f-ing crazy. " I also said Merry Christmas to myself. I was not irritated at the staff; I was irritated with the situation and disappointed. I also asked if they would check again to see if my insurance didn't cover it. Barnett came running down the hall accusing me of cussing out his staff. I was blindsided. Didn't see it coming. My words were not directed toward the staff. Barnett told his staff to cancel my surgery. I might add, I haven't been able to see well for 2 years. I was diagnosed back in April. I was also disappointed the surgery wouldn't be for 6 months. Depressed. It was a momentary reaction on my part, and I had no ill-will toward the staff. I tried to explain, but I couldn't. He yelled, calling me a liar! All this was in front of other patients in the waiting room. I begged Barnett to not to cancel my surgery! After calling me a liar, he promptly told his staff to take me off the books...no surgery. He threw me out of the office. I left in tears. A woman in the waiting room came to my car and told me she saw and heard the whole thing. She said," I watched you, heard you, and you didn't do anything wrong." She comforted me and was shocked at Barnett's behavior toward me. I still cry and get stomach aches over the event. I tried to apologize, but I wasn't allowed. Instead, I was called a liar and refused surgery and help. There should be a list of rules on his lobby wall: 1. No having a bad day 2. No irritation, depression, or questioning about insurance allowed. 3. No foul language allowed, not even to yourself. 4. No comments allowed 5. Must stay quiet and obey 6. No speaking 7. Sit down, wait, be treated without a word 8. Check out quietly with nothing said about money owed. 9. No questions...just pay 10. Smile, be cheerful, leaving any trials you're having outside the door. Do not bring them into this office. 11. No depression, irritation, frustration, profanity allowed! If you see Barnett, he'll be nice and apparently he will do a good job. He wasn't to me. If you ask him about this, he'll continue to call me a liar. Make sure nobody close to you died the day before you see Barnett...a husband, a child, a good friend...which might affect your state of mind and heart and being in a sad, depressed or frustrated way. No one told me this could not be combined with the $99 frame special. I only learned that AFTER I purchased the frames. When I questioned it, instead of simply explaining the policy, the situation was turned into a personal attack. I was told I was no longer welcome in the store, and the owner later labeled me "aggressive" and accused me of cursing at staff. The owner's response says everything. Rather than acknowledging that the terms were not explained to me beforehand, she chose to defend the employee and blame the customer. I got my refund, but I would rather take my business somewhere that values customers more than they value being right. You can keep the $100. I'll keep my dignity and take my business elsewhere.

At my first appointment, the doctor mentioned that it is difficult to get 20/20 results when the patient has had LASIK and that when we considered lenses Toric might be an option. At the pre-surgery appointment, my surgeon said that regular lenses would be fine because of what "a good job the LASIK surgeon had done."
