Unfortunately, since this place is decades old, and used to be really wonderful (maybe 8 years ago…read moreI liked it once?), there is now firmly in place a close-knit team of unmitigated Karens holding down the fort here -- condescending, surly, DELIBERATELY UNHELPFUL beeatches who LOVE to make everything as complicated as possible in order to NOT to help you find anything. They need to let you know at ALL TIMES how very stupid you are and how little grasp you have. They like to doubletalk, make things difficult, and ask circular questions. It is always a tiresome chore to try to shop there, and every time I go, I say oh yeah and I'm reminded! It's really quite funny if you're not suffering or in a hurry, which I was sadly both. Larry David could make a great episode about this eternally empty pharmacy with its sad dusty rows of pill bottles on Curb Your Enthusiasm, as the level of snooty Santa Monica-esque tom foolery and ultra LA "super bullsh#t" as my friend calls it is in high rare form here. Hah! I tried to look past the nasty staff today, as I've gamely done for years now -- a tall statuesque white haired woman in her 60's is a particular delight -- and would easily have spent a thousand bucks there today, but yeah, that will be my last visit. The saddest part is how mom and pops are disappearing. People like the staff here are why Amazon wins -- I went outside and ordered what I was looking for before the light had changed.

It's usually been an older crowd that's wanted whatever health products were popular 10-20 years ago. At one point during the late 90's and early 00's, it was tremendously popular with the celebrity class of LA, and it was Erewhon before there was Erewhon. It has since drifted into a more relaxed, slightly frumpier incarnation now in 2026. As you can see from all the 1 and 5 star reviews, it's a place that inspires both stubborn loyalty and intense frustration in equal measure, and I think that about sums up experience for the uninitiated. You'll see that I've split the difference with this 3 star review in an attempt to capture reality. This is far from a perfect grocery store -- the prices are high, a lot of the produce is not looking so good, the milk is always about to expire, the aisles are poorly organized, they're missing lots of things you want. But it's also a real co-op and not a chain, it's possible to eat healthfully from here, and they are extremely responsive to their member's (numerously and frequently delusional and extremely SaMo) requests. The angry reviews about bad service here are overblown; I've been here dozens of times and never had a problem. And as long as it's member-owned, it can always change for the better very quickly, which I've seen happen here before, and may happen again. Personally, my reason for not shopping here is just the poor organization of the store overall, selection of dry goods which are widely second-rate to me, and shabby, soon-to-be-expiring produce and perishables attached to a luxury price. I see no reason to shop here when I have the SaMo farmer's market AND better organized specialty stores like Erehwon or McCall's right near by -- which are, despite what numerous reviews here desperately proclaim, the exact same price point as Co-Opportunity. I hope this clears up why the reviews here are all-over-the-place, it's because the store is too!
