As always blood is in short supply so after getting a couple calls to donate I made my appointment! Staff here is always pleasant and even though I didn't have time at work to do the fast track check in today it only took a few minutes to get it done here. Vitals were taken, finger stick, ouch, to check for iron levels and I was seated to start my donation. They always have staff here that are quick to get the needle in and virtually pain free. I finished my donation in record time today, under 20 minutes! I credit the squeeze ball and drinking lots of water to that! A snack and juice and wait for 15 minutes to ensure I was feeling ok and on my way! read more

I already contacted Vitalant to complain -- and to the Life Church that sponsored the blood drive. The owner said, "because of you, life was saved." Barf. What a silly platitude. If their staff had been half-way decent, they would have had my pint of blood. But they were so rude, I left -- with my blood still inside me. I'll give it to another local blood bank. read more

My wife and I began giving blood at Vitalant in 2018. For the first 2 or 3 years, everything was fine. The staff was friendly and the experience of giving blood at their Reno location was mostly pleasant. But after I came back following the pandemic, things seem to have changed there. The staff is no longer friendly, they occasionally make bad mistakes (a needle was knocked out of my arm once, for instance) and I they tend to ignore you while you are donating, which can sometimes be quite frustrating. I have also had bad experiences recently trying to cash in my credits for gift cards and t-shirts. I've had to call to find out where my order is and the response was dismissive and unhelpful. I wouldn't recommend Vitalant. While donating blood is important, I will go to a different organization from now on. The staff should understand that people who go there are donating their time and, quite literally, their blood, and recognize that donors are essential and should be respected. read more

I visited Vitalant for a blood donation. I made an appointment online and selected the Power Red option which collects more RBCs than a standard whole blood draw but returns plasma, white cells, etc. back into your blood stream. Starting with the receptionist, all the staff I encountered were friendly and kind. The donor lounger is fairly comfortable. I will try to make a better habit of periodic donation. read more

I have been a blood donor since the 70's when I took a bloodbanking course ( immunohematology ) at UNR when I was pre-med student. The old office was on Kirman. I got my 5 gallon donor medal about 20 years later. I felt a intuitive calling to donate today as I drove by the Terminal Way location because I read that a girl I have been praying for had over 40 units of blood & platelets in her fight with cancer. So today I donated a double bag of red blood cells ( B - ) The intake rep Jimmy, and the phlebotomists Kim & Andrew are all 5 stars... If you are going in for the first time for a 2 hour pheresis donation of platelets, be aware that you are entitled to a blanket as your body temp can drop; that pain or tingling at the site should be reported immediately; and they have tablet devices and earphones for the long haul. I only learned of these perks as someone was coming in just as I was finishing up and they got all set up. I had been quite cold and had pain and tingling the whole time, just thought that was part of the process, and I also would loved to have watched a movie. So if you get someone who doesn't tell you things: speak up, even if not one single person over a 2 hour period asks if you are ok, as happened to me. I went in upbeat and eager to donate, as the front desk person can attest to, but I left feeling depressed for having been ignored while performing a voluntary service to help those in need. Glad the platelets will help someone in an emergency, but didn't feel welcomed, so likely won't return. read more

My first time donating blood here was a 4.5 star experience, and because it's a non-profit organization that does important work, I'm rounding up. If you can, I recommend donating blood here or using their website to find a local blood drive. The website was easy to use, and I made an appointment for the next day. I received an email confirmation with a link to an online questionnaire that I was instructed to fill out the day of the donation. I arrived early for my appointment, prepared to get some reading done, but after the friendly receptionist checked me in, the nurse saw me immediately. A few more questions to answer, my photo taken, and my finger pricked to make sure my hemoglobin levels were high enough to donate, and I was in the chair, donating blood. All in all, the experience took no more than 25 minutes. Perfect! Mike, my nurse, was super friendly and competent. It was a genuine pleasure talking to him. The building is aesthetically pleasing to be in, with an interesting high circular area in the middle of where the donation chairs are. That is good because my eyes need something to draw their attention so that I don't accidentally look at my arm or the medical equipment that is taking my blood. There are TVs as well, and the donation chairs were comfy. I can't award them the full five stars, because their snack selection is pitiful! Maybe I was spoiled by the smorgasbord of treats at the American Red Cross in Atlanta where I used to donate. But come on, y'all can get more creative at Costco and really put out a spread for the donators to choose from while we wait 5-10 minutes to make sure we don't have an adverse reaction from donating. The apple juice in the elementary school sized plastic containers was delicious, though. So on everything that matters: United Blood Services is great, and I've marked on my calendar when I'm next eligible to donate blood. read more

They showed up in a DISGUSTING BUS. The thing looks 30 years old! It smells, it's rundown, and even though I saw staff cleaning, it didn't make a difference! It was also smoking! The bus was SMOKING. We aren't in healthcare so there isn't much we can do to help with the pandemic, besides wearing masks and practicing social distancing, so we thought we'd our part. They do ask a lot of questions and not everyone is eligible to donate. They do not turn people away because of sexual orientation. Only certain behaviors or exposure. Their new name is Vitalant. Same nice people. The technicians here are excellent. They make you feel relaxed, and seem to care about your comfort. The reclining chairs are comfortable while you are donating; they have waters and snacks and don't rush you after your finished. I have donated blood here many times in the past. I did not donate for awhile due to a busy schedule and low hemoglobin levels, but things have calmed down and I take iron supplements now so hopefully I can donate more frequently. Today the process was a bit different than before due to COVID-19 protocols. I made an appointment online which was quick and easy. I was able to fill out the health questionnaire online which was also easy, and then print out a ticket to bring with me for the donation. This saved about ten minutes at the donation center. They take your temperature with a forehead scanning device before you check-in. Masks are required to be worn by donors and staff. They also do a good job at keeping donors six feet away from each other. Check-in was smooth and the staff member was nice. Theresa took my vitals and was very friendly. A few more questions and it was time to donate. I donated double red blood cells. A slightly higher hemoglobin level is required for this type of donation. Basically they remove the red blood cells and return other blood components back to you in a saline solution. I usually feel better after this type of donation! Sometimes you can get cold, but they have heat packs (or blankets before COVID-19). You can also feel a tingling sensation during the return of the other blood components, but it passes quickly. This donation takes about 30 minutes (whole blood donation takes about 10-15 minutes). Mike was in charge of my donation. He was great...painless insertion of the needle, hit the vein in the first try, checked on me frequently, and explained the whole process. The staff here are very nice and appreciative of your donation. Before, during, and after the donation they offer you water and snacks (sweet or salty). They also check on you frequently to be sure you feel OK and are not having any discomfort. They do not rush you out of the donor chair and recommend waiting in the building for 15 minutes to be sure you do not have a reaction to donating. They give you a sheet at checkout with your blood pressure, blood type, and hemoglobin level. You can also go online to get your vitals and cholesterol levels too. They walked me to the front of the building after my donation since they are using overflow rooms in the back to keep social distancing in place. The building is clean, and a very pleasant environment. They have plenty of flat screen TVs to watch while waiting and donating (not in the overflow rooms however). I highly recommend donating blood here whether you are a first time donor or have donated before. read more

Vitalant (use to be United Blood Services) has always co-operated with the Veterans Administration and Medicare and offered free services to patients of these organizations (phlebotomies and other procedures). Now under new management they are going to be charging as much as $250.00 for veterans to have their blood drawn. No one should continue to donate blood to this organization. read more

Also, the staff are real professional and friendly. There are snacks available for all donors after you are done giving. I'm about to visit this UBS location for the third time tomorrow and am honored to regularly donate blood here every 8 weeks since moving to Reno. The staff are very kind and express their appreciation for your donation, making this a great place to start your donor experience if you're a bit nervous. By creating an online log-in it is easy and convenient to schedule an appointment at the center or even locate other mobile donation cites around the city. Ample free parking is available in front of the building and the facility is clean and comfortable. Private rooms are used for the questionnaire and health screening portion of the visit and the donation chairs are in a bright, airy room with multiple TVs. The recovery/rest area offers indoor and outdoor seating, reading materials, beverages and snacks. Please consider making an appointment and help to save lives! read more

United Blood Services is a great place to donate if you are a donor. If you aren't, you should look into it! You can schedule your appointments online so you never have to wait for an opening. They are always running a promotion to give their donors something - either a drawing into a car raffle, a gift certificate for a free pizza, a pint of ice cream, etc. They also have the Hero in You Rewards program where you can redeem your points for movie gift certificates and other items. You get points for making and keeping appointments and for of course, donating. I've only donated Whole Blood so far so I can't speak to other types of donations but the process is very simple and pretty fast. I fill out my questionnaire at home and then they do a quick check to make sure I'm healthy enough to donate. Afterwards they move you to the donor room and set everything up and it only takes about 10-15 for me to donate. Then they have you wait in the waiting room with snacks and juice for 15 minutes. The first time I donated about 10 years ago, I nearly passed out, but now I know to eat beforehand and afterwards. You might be a bit tired but nothing a quick nap won't fix and of course you'll just feel good for doing something for others. My mom needed blood many times before she passed away, so I do it for her and I'm grateful there were donors for her when she needed it. read more

Came in with an appointment, signed in, did my interview online on the computer in the lobby. All done within the first 5 minutes. No wait. Personal interview, prick. 10 minutes. I'm in a chair. Painless stick, extremely friendly and pleasant technicians check up often and joke around, technicians show me everything about the scale and machine and the beeps it was sending out, I got a certificate of appreciation with my name on it, absolutely painless needle exit. 10 minutes. I snack and drink gatorade for 15 minutes. And I'm out! I left without any discomfort or regrets. Saving lives and having a ball while doing so. I wish all my blood donation centers were this amazing. I've been to 6 different locations. This place is the best by far. read more

I've been donating blood here for 3 years and I've never had a problem until now. The employee I worked with was very rude and she didn't even bother trying to answer some questions I had regarding internal bleeding from my last donation. She asked me my height and weight and then took my hemoglobin, had me do the survey, and then came in and weighed me. I was 2.5 pounds too light and she said "yeah you're not donating today." I'm upset because I've never once been weighed and I've been donating for over 5 years. If they aren't going to do it every time, then they shouldn't do it once and not allow me to donate. She especially should have weighed me before she had me do the other things. The whole process was a waste of my time. read more

The staff is friendly and the wait is generally pretty short. Everything about UBS is pretty typical for a blood donation office. They have several tvs on while you're being "drained". The donation area is very open so you can see and hear everything that is going on. Sometimes it can be a little noisy. I suggest taking a book and some headphones. Protip: Ask about a "double donation". It takes a little longer but helps more people. read more

While the blood mobile is very convenient, I never thought donating blood was painful until I moved to Reno. First time visiting their office, Staff here were okay. Front desk employee was very welcoming as well as the assistance through the process, but overall I would feel good coming back. They explain alot to you, they love explaining every step to you as your donating. Reno Radio Blood Drive was a bust...real waste of time and realization discrimination is tolerated when you are trying to help others. I never want to see or hear another whining plead for donations after being denied on my first visit solely based on being a gay man citing. FDA regulations. I could of lied but why. Biggest population with HIV are not gay. If it's tested, what's the issue? Makes me question the effectiveness if this is a deal breaker. Promiscuous heterosexuals welcome with open arms. I can donate my organs checking a box on a DMV form no questions asked. Our government is behind the times. Staff was nice, thanks for the ice cream coupon. read more

Last year, I went in to donate blood at one of my high school's blood drives. I couldn't because my pulse was too high. Despite this, I get calls at least once every two weeks/at least three times a month soliciting blood from these guys. No matter the fact that I consistently tell them that I'm only interested in donating at school blood drives because I don't want to waste an hour and a half and drive to goddamned Reno to donate blood, they still call. I think by now it's safe to assume that they are run by vampires, though Dio Brando or Dracula would probably be less annoying. I resorted to going to their site and opting out of being contacted through most means and changing my phone number in their records to avoid calls, as they have no 'do not call' list form, and various complaints I've read online state that asking for one's number to be removed is ineffective. These guys do an important job I'm sure, but I'd rather they focused on that rather than shaking down people to donate. read more
