I've been going to Vitality for about 12 years, usually twice a week. I just turned 75, and while I no longer take Level 4 classes, I credit Pilates with helping me age with reasonable grace, and to fairly rapid recovery from surgeries. I've been doing Pilates for over 20 years in several cities across the U.S., so I've been to a lot of studios. I've been going to Vitality for the past 3 years, and it's easily my favorite. Let's be real: Pilates can be expensive. That's just how it is. Before starting at Vitality, I checked out all the studios in my area--mainly looking at 1) schedule and 2) cost. Vitality had the best class times and was the most affordable. And then I started taking classes... and realized the instructors here are some of the best I've ever worked with. Like, actually-know-the-body, offer-real-corrections, make-you-laugh-while-you-sweat kind of good. Another win, in my opinion: no weird memberships that require a notarized letter and a blood oath to cancel. I also appreciated that pricing was clearly listed on the website. I didn't have to fill out a form and wait for someone to call me with a sales pitch. It's all just... there. I'm on a monthly plan now (I think there are a few different options), but I started with a 5-class package to see if I liked it. Some Pilates studios can give off a certain vibe--everyone looks the same, cute outfits, perfect form, like they walked out of a Pilates catalog. I've never felt that vibe at Vitality. People are welcoming, unpretentious, and really there to move and feel better. It's a nice community. read more

I have utilized the Phinney Ridge location for well over ten years. Taking a variety of classes, including reformer, jumpboard, and bodhi, has helped me both pre-hab and rehab from three total joint replacements and a broken wrist. For years, my physical therapist has told me to "keep on going to Pilates." The recent change in management at Vitality has given the Studios new equipment and a more refined teaching philosophy. One can find a wide range of class options from beginner-friendly to very intense to relaxing. Class size allows for individual attention. Some instructors push you to the limits while others, whose expert eyes offer precise, corrective feedback, make Pilates easier. Instructors offer suggestions to make each exercise more or less difficult. It's your choice. Because of the wide variety of classes available each week, you can always try something new. read more

I've been going to Vitality - primarily the Phinney Ridge but occasionally Ravenna and Mt. Baker - for several months now and the general quality of the beginner classes is outstanding. (I may soon progress to intermediate, I was strengthening personal back stuff so I am slower than most -- but there is no pressure to leave beginner if you don't want to. It is still a fierce workout! Just more focus on form.) All of my instructors have been fantastic but the one that stands out for me is Warren Woo. He speaks Pilates, yoga, and dance, and I've seen him work with folks who are athletic but don't know Pilates, folks that know other kinds of Pilates or yoga but trying this style of reformer out for the first time, older folks with back issues like me! He gives concise form instructions and really encourages the class with empathy "Whew that was a lot! We can put that away!" Seriously, the studio is great with a variety of locations and Zoom classes and their initial special deal is a great way to try them all out before opting into a membership. read more

I've been a part of the teacher training twice, once in 2017 and again in 2023. I've had nothing but great experiences both times. The veteran instructors are all incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming, and everybody at the studio has always been professional. Teacher training programs can be a big professional investment, but the mentorship and leadership at vitality has been worth every penny. A huge benefit of the teacher training program is a membership to take their group classes, and I always leave classes feeling challenged and connected to my breath and movement. I would happily recommend this studio to anyone interested in starting their Pilates journey, either as a student or a teacher. read more

Having tried reformer Pilates when it first came out decades ago, I couldn't understand why Pilates would cost as much as, or more than, a massage or PT session. And, being young and spry at the time, I found that performing slow-paced, controlled exercises with injured athletes or middle-agers with various pain issues to be quite a downer, in that it offered a glimpse into my own lumbago-ictic future. Now that my middle-aged premonitions have come true, I was told by several PTs, acupuncturists, doctors that developing a strong core - the golden principle of Pilates - is the key to maintaining a pain-free back (that, and not trying to twerk excessively in too-tight jeans after three glasses of wine). Lured by the sexy and sometimes devastating Groupon I purchased a 10-class package for about $70.00. Vitality requires that new members take a few classes of their Foundation series, which provide a basic understanding about Pilates methodology and terminology, the different parts of the reformer and some of Pilates' core exercises. Depending upon your skill level you can get past the Foundation courses quickly (I did only 2 or 3) and move onto the Intermediate Level. I had already been practicing Pilates for 4-5 months at another facility, but still found the classes to be useful in going over some of the terminology and basic practices. I also liked the fact that everyone had to achieve a basic level of understanding before moving on, so that classes can move at the same pace, and there is less risk for injury. Each level is clearly defined with "goals", so that you must be able to understand how to perform certain moves before being okayed by the instructor to go onto the next level. It helps if you consistently attend a certain instructor's class, so that he/she can see your progress. I've had Intermediate classes with Andy, Lillian, Kimberly, Autumn and Bhodi classes with Nicole. Each instructor has his/her style and each may vary the class routine and difficulty according to the students present that day. While Pilates classes are not cheap, Vitality's group classes are less expensive than some traditional Pilates studios and more in line with the Club Pilates philosophy by providing classes that incorporate different equipment: Bhodi, chair, jumpboard in a small class setting (no more than 8 students per class). You can buy group classes at a monthly or annual rate or as a 15-class pass, with the 15-class rate at about $30/class (including tax). The monthly membership of about $208.00 including tax does have restrictions in that you can only book 2 classes per week in advance with the ability to book more classes within 48 hours of the class. As most popular classes are usually full, it's sometimes difficult to find a last-minute drop out for the class of your choice. Also, as Vitality's popularity grows with the Groupon offerings, I wish there were more classes available at the Ravenna location during different hours of the day. But as the studio here has only one room for group reformer classes, only one reformer class can take place at a time, which means if Ravenna's your location of choice, you're stuck with limited offerings. For those of you considering the Groupon - sign up was easy. I emailed a friendly person who signed me up onto the mindbodyonline website, which allows me to browse and book classes and reschedule them easily. It was also easy to cancel the auto monthly membership, as long as proper notice is given. A great way to try out Pilates, if your schedule allows. read more

Hilary, Your response to me - given that I'd expressed I was quite experienced in Pilates - was very condescending and disrespectful. Did you not read my review?! I only went to a few of your classes because your instructors, who were dismissive and seemed overwhelmed, explicitly told me that people who bought Groupons could ONLY take beginner classes. Take responsibility and learn to be respectful! Your studio equipment is old and your classes are very large, so at least provide quality service. When I went to Vitality Pilates, I'd been getting private instruction and taking advanced group equipment classes 4x a week for over 2 years at several different places. I took months of basic core classes. It's rude for you to insinuate I don't understand Pilates and need to take more beginner core classes. In fact, I was initially taught Pilates my PT, so I am intimately aware that Pilates is much more than a workout. Two of my PT's other patients had similarly negative experiences at Vitality, so the PT practice is dissuading other patient from going to your studio at this point. Pilates on 10th and Union Pilates have superior customer service, equipment, and instructors, so I advise people check out these studios. Hilary, maybe you should take some classes at Pilates on 10th or Union Pilates so you can learn how a studio should be run? read more

I moved to Ravenna and wanted to find a new place to do pilates that was closer to my house. I had been doing pilates for a couple years in Wallingford so I was not looking for a beginner class. I walked into Vitality Pilates to ask about classes one afternoon. The woman at the front desk was on the phone and ignored me so I waited patiently. When she got off the phone I asked her about pilates classes and tried to explain my situation. Well, she could not have come across as more disinterested. Basically what I learned is that they have beginner classes that I should take and that a possible customer walking into the place was clearly a pest for her. For athletic classes that are $25-$30 an hour (standard) this is not at all acceptable. I would give them 1 star for this experience, but I'm giving them 2 because maybe the classes are good. I didn't have the full experience - but I did have a pretty poor one. When I go back to pilates, I might have to go back to Wallingford. read more

I'd always thought pilates required private lessons, a high level of fitness, and a lot of money. Fortunately, I took a moment to check out Vitality Pilates and discovered that they offer small classes at a reasonable price that work for every fitness level. I'm amazed at how quickly the classes go by, feeling almost easy, and then, by the end, I feel that I still had an excellent workout. If you've never tried pilates, I highly recommend it! Every instructor I've had at Vitality Pilates has been impeccable in terms of understanding any injuries or potential injuries, helping me modify the exercises and providing outstanding and helpful instruction. I feel totally supported and encouraged. I also love the calm environment and decor, and the friendly and helpful staff. I've never had trouble finding a class that works for my schedule and getting into one, even occasionally at the last minute. The online scheduling and reservation system is excellent, and checking in is quick and easy. Even better is that my husband enjoys taking the classes with me. After 20+ years of trying to find some form of exercise we both enjoyed doing together, we've finally found something! read more

I wanted to try the introductory offer of 8 classes. I stopped by the studio a couple of times and there was never anyone available to explain the system/procedure to me. I called customer service and was basically told to either sign up online or go by the studio with questions (which I already had done). I signed up and have enjoyed it, but it would have worked better for me if someone had explained THEIR policies. I would have done things differently had I known. read more

I'm not sure why the Ravenna study has such a bad rating. I've been attending classes here for several years. I took some time off because of a surgery. But I've been very happy here both before and after my weightloss. I started at the studio 400 plus pounds and a size 24. I needed to build all the core I could. Now coming back after a 200lb weightloss I enjoy the studio just as much. Joy is by far our fav instructor. She's fun and very efficient with our time. My husband just started at the studio and he loves it. Natalie is also a lovely instructor she starts our weekends off right! Melissa is fantastic on Monday nights! If you are looking for a fun, low impact, kick butt studio this is the place! Only 7 ppl in class max great punch card and monthly membership. After two years of membership at Vitality, there are a couple of things that are nagging at me... finally getting around to writing this updated review that's been a long time coming. Don't get me wrong. I gave Vitality a five-star review back in October 2010 because I recognized the high quality of instruction and equipment. Both of those things are still true. Vitality provides an excellent introductory series for people who are new to pilates or even new to fitness classes in general - I highly recommend it if you're looking for a place to try out pilates. However, it seems like the Ravenna studio in particular gets the short end of the stick between the three Vitality locations. After two years attending multilevel classes primarily at the Ravenna studio, there are still NO MIRRORS in the group classrooms. I've never been to a studio that didn't have mirrors, out of the three other studios where I've taken classes in Washington DC and Tacoma - even Vitality's Phinney Ridge location has several mirrors in both studios (I've never been to the Mount Baker location). Being able to see yourself in the mirror is an important part of becoming more aware of your alignment, weaknesses and imbalances as you work through the exercises - especially when you have eight students in a class and the instructor can't spend much time watching any single student. I'm also very disappointed in the lack of advanced class offerings at Ravenna in particular. The multilevel classes often cater more to the beginner level, as many of the newer multilevel students came straight from an intro series. When you have been taking pilates for four or five years, you come to class hoping to be challenged and maybe even to learn something new. I rarely feel that happens at my Vitality classes these days. Several of my favorite instructors, who knew me personally and never failed to make class rigorous for every individual in the class - tailoring it to every level isn't easy! - have cut back their class offerings at the Ravenna studio or no longer teach with Vitality. Unfortunately, there are no Advanced classes at Ravenna on the fall 2012 schedule. Only a few multilevel classes fit my schedule and are taught by instructors whose teaching style works well for me and my body. "Multilevel" varies greatly depending on who is teaching the class - some instructors will provide modifications to make it as challenging as you want, while others teach to a more basic level. I'm struggling to find classes that are stimulating and rigorous with teachers whose philosophy and teaching style works for me. This is really frustrating, especially considering I'm locked into a contract for another six months! That's another thing: their contract for annual members is air-tight. You either pay $40 more per month for a month-to-month membership, or sign up for a yearly membership that has no reasonable "outs" (there is also a 15-class punch card option, but if you're attending class at least 2x/week then it's not cost efficient). If the class schedule gets shuffled around and the instructors or class times no longer fit your needs, you are outta luck. Cancelling your membership before the year is up means you forfeit the cost of the remaining months. That seems ridiculous, and in hindsight I can't believe I agreed to it. No gym I've belonged to or pilates studio I've frequented has ever imposed such a policy, and I wish I had thought harder about it before signing the annual membership contract last winter! I signed up without thinking too hard about it because Vitality is the most convenient and comprehensive pilates studio in my area, and like I said the quality of instruction is generally quite good - plus, at the time there were more advanced class options at the Ravenna location. This review is tough for me to write, as I admire and respect many of the the instructors I've worked with at Vitality in the past couple years... but I also realize they don't run the business, and I think that there are several things missing that would make the Vitality experience truly worthy of a five-star review. I hope they will reconsider their contract options, listen to my feedback about offering more advanced classes at ALL studios, not just one or two, and with a wider variety of instructors. Oh, and PLEASE - install mirrors at Ravenna!! For the price they charge, that should be a given! read more

I first joined this studio in 2011, so have attended over the course of many years. Many of the instructors are amazing and very good. My low review is due to the operation of the business. First, the yearly membership, as mentioned by other reviewers, is incredibly restrictive. After a job change requiring significant travel (7+ months in Southern Africa), I was told that is not a good enough reason for ending my membership and was then condescendingly given a contract law lesson by the person with whom I spoke. I would assume this would be a change in residence, but apparently not. I cannot believe I ever agreed to that membership. Never again. In addition, the studio in Ravenna seems to get the short end of the stick--fewer classes, same couple of instructors (some of which are not very good), out of date H/VAC system (little heat in winter, no a/c in summer). I cannot recommend a long-term relationship with this studio. Maybe a couple of one-off classes, but nothing more. read more

I signed up for Pilates to help with my recovery from a shoulder injury, and that it has. Every instructor I encountered at Vitality familiarized themselves with my limitations and goals. I always feel cared for and challenged during the classes. The studios are clean and have excellent equipment. I recommend Vitality Pilates for anyone looking to realize a fitness goal. read more

The quality of instruction is much better than that of other studios I've visited across the city. The instructors are knowledgeable and very good at giving appropriate cues and corrections. They also give modifications for injured/pregnant clients. There isn't a regular front desk person, though. It can be frustrating at times but is probably a cost-saving measure. It's kind of a pain if you have an immediate question about your account. That's the only reason I wouldn't give them 5 stars. read more

I started pilates at the Ravenna Vitality Pilates over 3 years ago. The studio goes through small updates every few months but the instructors and standards continually rise. I love the class size and new classes becoming available every few months. The front office staff is attentive and listens to feedback. My fiance and I were passing through Seattle on a trip. After a long few days of hiking, we were looking for a good place to get a massage. We stumbled upon Vitality Pilates in Ravenna and couldn't have been more pleased. Marie Lynah was our masseuse. She got to know us a bit before starting our sessions, really taking the time to determine what areas she should focus on during the 1 hour. We each ended up getting a deep tissue massage. My fiance went second and even after spending an hour with me before, he couldn't stop talking about how much better his back and shoulders felt. We both left Vitality in Ravenna wishing that we lived in Seattle. We would go back and get a massage from Marie Lynah in a heartbeat. read more

The owner's comment is simply inaccurate. The contract does not require electronic cancellation. I gave them a written cancellation and they continued to bill me. To this date they have refused to respond to my request for reimbursement. There are a lot of other Pilates studios out there that don't place making a buck over all else--try one of those. read more
