Wow! This was a breath-taking experience. My heart almost skipped a beat! I actually touched fire with my tongue...very sexy. TASTING THE TIP...of fire was one of the coolest parlor tricks I learned on the day. Always liked the concept of mastering the fire element. I did just that with my instructor Cat! This woman knows her craft. As I held two wands in one hand, one on fire and the other not; I transferred the flames from one wand to the other using MY BARE FINGERS. In one instance, I actually held fire in the palm of my left hand as I transferred the flames from one wand to the other still using MY BARE HAND. Yes, I dipped the wands in flame fluid before each lesson. During the brief moment,the flame in my left palm felt surreal. I remember Cat stated that when your palm is on fire it is instinctive to extinguish the flame by rubbing your hand on clothing to snuff the flames; this action can be dangerous. Clothes can catch on fire and it becomes a messy situation. The smartest action is to hold out your hand and close the palm quickly. Students are instructed to style their hair away from their face, wear sleeveless clothing and flat shoes. Cat is a highly skilled professional, displays patience with her students! First and foremost, Vixen Deville (Cat) is an amazing person who celebrates life at every turn, and she brings all of that energy and spirit to her Burlesque and Body Confidence. While in Los Angeles, I received this package as a gift from my wife. I met Cat at Karma Lounge with two other people, and we enjoyed one stellar performance after another from Dollface Dames. Now, this isn't your grandfather's burlesque with a guy beating a tom-tom as a curvaceous woman twists and turns with over-sized feather fans. The acts incorporated steam punk, Goth, alternative ballet, Catwoman, and much more to great music. The crowd encompassed a mix of men and women there to appreciate great dance and confidence, and celebrate the performer's individual style and empowerment. In regard to the performances, we're not talking about a group of size zero models sashaying back and forth on stage, but strong, vibrant women who are athletic and driven, and celebrate the female form in any size. This is most certainly where Vixen's "Body Confidence" comes into play. Whether male or female, and regardless of your shape and size, Vixen wants you to appreciate, embrace, and love who you are as a person. She helps bring out your confidence with a wonderful, fun, and engaging photoshoot. With professional make-up artist Elana Rose enhancing your look or keeping you natural, and professional photographer Jimmy Valena behind the lens, Cat directs you in a photoshoot with costumes and themes you both agreed upon. Everyone needs to talk one class with Cat. EVERYONE. It was a New Years resolution to step out of my comfort zone and dive into a hobby- I chose Burlesque. What can I say about Vixen/Cat that does service to the utter fabulousness she is? I suppose some good adjectives to use are: spectacular, stunning, expert, superb, excellent! I started off by taking her Intro to Burlesque workshop many moons ago thinking I was only doing this for fun and some growth, not EVER thinking I would perform (I'm not a performer; I've never performed in public). Well, after taking Cat's workshop classes... I gathered the courage and debuted last week with my own original burlesque character and piece! It was such a rush and a creative release for me, the entire process, and Cat was a wonderful teacher the entire way. She worked closely with me to help imagine the character/piece into existence, allowing me to fully dream my creation while providing helpful, supportive, and strong feedback along the way. Such an empowering experience! For those who want to dip their toe into the world of burlesque, Cat/Vixen DeVille's introductory class is the way to go. I started off by taking her intro class, and decided to do her workshop experience. In the workshop, you do a few classes focused on building up your basic burlesque skills, and as you continue through, you explore and build your burlesque character and act for a debut performance at the end. Cat is an amazing teacher with a plethora experience to help you develop and fine-tune your act. Cat does a great job of coaching you through your fears and giving you guidance as you create your act, all the while encouraging you to do you. A lot of ladies doing this experience are typically venturing out of their comfort zone, and I have to say, you won't find anyone better than Cat to be there for you along your burlesque journey! If you are considering the workshop, I do recommend that you go in with the mindset of "going all in"--meaning, taking the risk to go out of your comfort zone and loving yourself for ALL that you are--strengths and insecurities. From what I saw, the people who got the most out of the experience were the ones who were willing to take that risk! And trust me, having gone through it myself and facing my own insecurities related to performing my act, I was all the better for having done it. I had a blast creating my costume and act, and had such an adrenaline rush when I finally performed my act in front of an audience! Cat integrates self-love throughout her classes, and for me, I really felt an internal shift toward confidence and self-love at the end of it (with a newfound love for burlesque!). Taking this class was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I can't say enough good things about Vixen and this wonderful class. I was a burlesque singer for a troupe when I was diagnosed with vocal cord damage. I was instructed by my doctor stop singing immediately and make all kinds of lifestyle changes. So while on vocal rest it was suggested that I take a class and start working on other burlesque skills that didn't require me to sing. I had taken Vixen's intro class the year before, just before a show that required me to dance, and I needed some confidence to be get through that show. I'm not a dancer. That one hour did the trick. I had an amazing time, met new people, and walked out of there feeling awesome. The night of the show I was confident and calm and pretty good. I talked to Vixen about my situation and she was super encouraging. I wasn't really sure if this was a good idea for me try dancing. She said there are all kinds of different acts in burlesque that I could do. And because she had seen me sing, she said I was a natural at performing and that I could definitely embrace something new. I walked into that class with a bunch jumbled ideas as to what I wanted to do. And with each class the number I was developing was coming into shape with the help of Vixen. When I had freakouts about wardrobe malfunctions she gave helpful suggestions as to how to get around them. When I freaked out in general, she was always so encouraging explaining that what I was doing wasn't easy and I was doing amazingly well for someone who hasn't been doing this for years. . The encouragement was contagious, because the students in her class were encouraging each other as each of our acts started to take form. It was a great environment to learn and grow. She isn't traditional about teaching steps, it's more about telling a story with each number. And not where your foot will be when you get to count 8. Because she taught that way it was easy to remember what I was doing from one moment to the next in my number. She encouraged students to embellish their costumes and really make them their own. Again super helpful suggestions as to how to make improvements to something as simple as a glove. With me being a bigger girl, I was super self conscious about my body, and the fact that I wasn't as flexible as most students. I was hopeless at stocking removal. Vixen made me feel like that was OK. I didn't have to remove stockings, there are other things I can do to enhance the number. It was all about what I was comfortable with, and nothing was a real requirement other than feeling good and presenting your true self. At the end of my class I had a fully developed act, a fairly comprehensive costume, and a new found confidence that really helped me step into my new role as dancer. The transformation was very noticeable among the people who knew me best. I debuted my act last month and it was a big hit. Everyone who saw love it and was extremely proud of me. As a result I have performed this number a total of 3 times in the last 3 weeks and it's really been a crowd pleaser. I felt good about performing as a dancer. The producer of my troupe is now encouraging me to dance in group numbers, and do more solo dance numbers. I have since returned to singing, but the skills I've gained from this class have enhanced even my singing performances. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to step out into something new. Especially if you're not the traditional body type. If you're anything like me you'll gain a love for your own body and embrace it as it is. I gained so much as result of taking this class.
