Great place to take the kids. They have Mater from "cars" kids love it. Always a great place to go. You can definitely make a day of it !!

This place could use some serious updating since it can smell a bit musty in many areas since it's been around so long, especially in the old buildings that hold the antique items, but it's still a fun visit and takes some time to go through all the buildings, inside and outside, not just in the buildings with the vehicles. They have a food vendor there with hotdogs, etc. Nothing too fancy but food is available there if youneed to take a break after walking around. It's a good place to take kids just for something different. One of their antique buildings has a really large selection of older toys and pop memoriblia. Awesome place to check out. Definitely was a lot bigger and way better then what I expected. My 4yr old son loved it as well and bonus he was free. Thanks Greg for your response. If I had been able to negotiate for the specific auto I was interested in, I would not have been able to see the whole museum. I would only have been speaking to your salesman about that one vehicle. The main complaint; however, was that the person on the phone did not tell me I needed an appointment, even after being told that I was not interested in a museum, only interested in negotiating for the purchase of a specific car, so your explanation that people try to get free admission is laughable. read more

Volo Auto Museum has cleverly convinced the public (and presumably the State of Illinois) that they actually *are* a museum, by charging them $12 to get in ($3 more for a trolley ride to gawp at celebrity cars)...when in reality they are a used car lot with a lot of expensive cars. A true museum would provide historical context and research on its exhibits, which in this case are cars, lots of them. Volo does not do this, nor do they appear to have anyone on staff that could....the offices are clearly labeled "auto sales." There is no information with any of the car exhibits other than a sales card detailing the selling points of the vehicle, and a "no haggle" price. Volo recently added a war section with several military vehicles, a Cantigny-styled walk-through exhibit, and a handful of cases of guns and materials. The layout is a little haphazard, although there is some effort to provide contextual information on what you are looking at. It feels like an afterthought, or something put in to maintain their museum status. None of the ordinance is for sale, which is a refreshing break from everything else on the property, which includes an adequate grill and an enormous collection of run-down buildings selling a few antiques and tons of garage sale items. Unlike a typical museum, the atmosphere is very much a retail environment, with a bit of hustle thrown in. The overwhelming number of signs on the property (most of them issuing one command or another to their visitors), the garish, everything-but-the-sink approach to its design and decor, and a disjointed layout with four pole barns spread across several acres all work against what one expects from a true museum. Bottom line: Not much history here, but rather an expensive car store strictly for car collectors. read more

I am not a huge cars fan. My husband though loved them. We come here once in a while, and I have to tell you, even with my not liking cars as much as him I still have pretty good time. The cars do look really pretty cool. I really only like going when it is nice out, if it is not nice, either I tell my husband I'm not going or I have a worse time than I would on a nice day. read more

All I can say is BUYER BEWARE. I spend 43,000 and contacted them about a 250.00 wiper motor that there ad said was sent in and rebuilt. My mechanic in CA discovered it wasn't working upon his inspection it was discovered it was rebuilt wrong. Volo Mr Kusz my salesman was basically non responsive other than to say car was sold as is. Another words tough S. Once it's sold buyers lookout your on your own even if the ad states new or rebuilt. My experience was very negative and they displayed no honor in taking care of the problem what so ever. Over all bad purchase. I've replaced all the front suspension and all 4 brake cylinders front brakes 100% clogged not working at all. After of course they said all were in tip top shape. Fun time for the whole family! Lots of cool vehicles and history!

What a wonderful surprise! As someone who grew up in Northern Illinois and remembers a particularly boring field trip to the Volo Bog, I've been skeptical of all things Volo since then. Boy was I wrong. Came here with my dad (who absolutely loves vintage automobiles) and I was really impressed. Great variety and selection. It's not just cars. Also vintage snowmobiles, motorized bicycles, military equipment, and campers. The layout of all the different buildings can be a bit confusing, so pay attention to the signs. You will need to double back a few times to see everything, but it's well worth your time. For what it's worth, it appears the majority of 1 or 2 star reviews come from people who have very little presence on Yelp. I definitely recommend checking this place out. read more

Our family had a great time here today. This place has expanded since we were here many years ago. While I didn't see any cars I'd want to or could purchase, it's cool that they're all for sale. We also enjoyed the not-for-sale movie cars. The RV section is worth noting too. After all of that we spent time walking around the antique market. It may be some time until we go back but it's recommended if looking for something to do on an off day or weekend. read more

We showed up and there was a heavy gasoline and exhaust smell. I didn't want my two-year old breathing that so we turned around and left.

I purchased a car from these folks and all I can say is WOW. A 1964.5 Mustang which, if I purchased from a private party would have cost me every cent, I paid at Volo. However from Volo they made sure every step of the way the car would be perfect. On test drive I found a few things I was concerned about. When they test drove it they not only fixed what I found but things I didn't. They poured 3,000 into it and never complained. When buying a classic I would NEVER go anywhere but Volo. If I purchased from a private party I would never have the confidence I have with Volo. Thanks Jay and all you guys, you rock. read more

We should have known that the website description was highly overblown. $14.95/person so see about 2 dozen "Hollywood" cars with very bad mannequins and a ton of really pretty vintage cars for sale. So unless you are a die hard car fan -- don't waste your money. read more

It's a nice place to LOOK at the vintage/collector cars but BUYER BE VERY AWARE. We purchased a 1972 Chevelle a number of years ago, it WAS NOT what was represented. We have the printed proof of what was represented, it was FRAUD. I have a letter from the Chicago BBB stating that we definitely had a case against him, that he should enter into arbitration but they have no method to get him to do so....he DID NOT arbitrate this matter. We were totally ripped off.............I would NEVER buy another vehicle from VOLO. read more

Buyer be aware be very very aware The listing said there was only 200 miles on the new motor well the first month I owned it I had to get Towed twice I have spent over $3300 on car repairs in just the first month New carburetor new transmission and shift kit new fuel pump and regulator new starter and ignition switch and it still needs more a lot of little things that was not done right and other things that were covered up I know they knew about some of these problems the ignition switch,carburetor and transmission and did not disclose them.When they brought the car out it was running.Anybody that started the car would have known that there where problems because when you turned the key the whole thing would turn,and it was always hard to start. So from the very first day I owned the car it needed a new ignition switch,carburetor,and transmission I am going to see if they want to buy the car back ha ha and if so I will take the $5000.00 loss. I haven't even drove the car much because it's always in the shop being repaired.the car DID NOT arrive to me in good working order.my problems started the very first day. read more

Went up with some friends to the Volvo Auto Museum on a Saturday to check out what it was all about. Having driven by many times on the way to my grandfathers house I always wanted to stop in and see what they had here. I found ticket prices to be reasonable for what they had on display here. I was really amazed at the number of Classic cars they have. Not only that but most are for sale... Who wants to buy me one. Lots of great Muscle cars to be seen here. Also great cars from the 20's, 30's, 40's 50's and 60's... Really enjoyed the Duzenburg collection. Having never seen one in real life this was worth coming to see on its own. The famous car collection is also a must see... Where else can you see the Benz that Britney spears crashed :) Didn't eat in the little cafe' so can't comment on it. Did hit the Antique store though and it is huge. Was so much there I didn't even see half of it. Really enjoyed the Volo Auto Museum... Now if I can just get that winning lotto ticket so I can come back and get a old Vette!!! read more

I am so torn. I really want to like you, Volo Auto Museum. But as a noise-sensitive person, my experience was nearly ruined by the very loud volume of the music playing in every exhibition hall except the one holding the very oldest cars. I thought about brining my father back here (he's a retired automotive engineer), and had second thoughts. But then I realized that seniors could just turn off their hearing aids!! Next time I will bring ear plugs. There's a lot to see here, so you get your money's worth. But it's also very stimulating. The movie buffs will be very excited to see all the cars from film. I guess I'm just less interested in that kind of stuff. I actually really enjoyed the quiet gallery of cars from the 20's and 30's. Talk about a time machine!! There's food on-site, a playground to let the youngsters roam, and an antique mall that's indoors and very large. I just wish I'd been able to hear myself think, and my companion speak to me. read more

The Volo Auto Museum is really cool. If you are into cars this is the place for you. Also, if you have kids, this is a really fun place to bring them, all the cars are so unique and so fun to look at. They even have a complete section devoted to the kids, called Kids Zone- which has Warner Bros and a exhibits with a bunch of different Disney characters in it! My favorite sections were the 101 Dalmatians and the Snow White sections, they were cute. I would definitely bring my nieces with me next time I go, I know they would love it. read more

Not a bad place to spend an afternoon but the recent price hike on admissions will now limit my future visits. It was about $15+ per person which I think is too high given that most of the cars and mall items for sale are overpriced compared to other car brokers and thrift shops. The military museum is a nice feature. Agree that some of the younger staff members are rude but many other staff members will greet and assist you in the shopping areas. read more

I bought a truck online from Volo Cars around the holidays. When I was looking at the photos online, I noticed the weather stripping that went around the cab doors had pulled away and the glue used to attach it had oozed out in several places and looked just awful. I wondered why they would not have fixed this before they took and posted the pictures. I mentioned this to the sales person and he assured me this would be fixed. It was not! Jay said before their vehicles are shipped they are inspected and make sure fluids are good, lights work, etc... He said they take pride in all their vehicles. They did not with this truck. They did nothing but drive it into the trailer on shipping day. I had a shop go through the vehicle after it was delivered to make sure it checked out okay. The mechanic gave me a two page list of repairs that needed to be addressed. Other than a nice paint job, this truck was mechanically neglected. The master cylinder was empty. Yes, empty. It had a bad transmission leak. It had to be pulled and needed new seals. The cooling fins in the radiator were blocked. The shocks were original. Hard to believe when this truck was supposed to be a frame off restore. They must have just forgot to do the shocks, right. The wheel bearings had to be repacked. Needed upper and lower ball joints. The play in the steering was terrible. I don't know who did this restore, but a coat of paint doesn't constitute a restoration in my book. This truck was a pig with lipstick and a dress. The internet description was egregiously false. I don't typically write reviews, but the problems and attention this truck came with need to be posted so someone else doesn't have to go through the same thing. Finally got the chance to come here with my boyfriend. Such a cool place. Cars, scooters, motorcycles, tractors, boat engines, antiques, historic military artifacts. How can you not have fun here? Every person I came in contact with was pleasant to us. The diner looked very cool and clean, so next time I'll probably eat there. The only complaints for me is it's confusing to figure out how to get to the next building, felt like my IQ dropped a couple points here. My second complaint was how hot the buildings were, I saw a thermometer say 80 degrees. Otherwise, loved this place! read more

I've been meaning to go to the Volo Auto Museum for many years and finally got around to it. The first thing that struck me was what a big operation it is with all it's buildings. They have a huge collection of cars and many other interesting things. Even kids will have a great time. The Duesenberg room is amazing! They have a restaurant too but the food appeared to be just frozen stuff that is re-heated and the staff was not very friendly. Don't get me wrong; they weren't nasty or anything but they had no enthusiasm and never even smiled even when I tried to joke with them. The reason I am only giving three stars is because of something that really surprised me. The paint work on their cars was incredibly poor. They look great from a distance but, when you get up close you see uneven painting, ripples, bubbles, runs and dings were just painted over without being repaired. I couldn't believe it. If you don't believe this, just look closely and at different angles to the light. $29.95 Earl Scheib jobs in the sixties were far better. That's no exaggeration. Some of the cars looked like they had been done with spray cans of brushes The Duesenbergs were almost certainly done with much greater care but I didn't go back to check after I started noticing the horrible paint work on the other cars. But my wife said she saw flaws in them too but I'm sure they were very minor. I wondered whether the terrible paint work might be just how they received the cars but they were obviously freshly painted and the incredible defects were consistent from car to car. It was unbelievable. I wouldn't even think of buying one of their cars if they painted it. I'm afraid the paint might bubble up and fall off - which might be the best thing! I just couldn't believe it. Look closely and you will see what I'm talking about. It's a shame to have such shoddy work on such beautiful old cars. read more

This place is entertaining. It's strange mix of "retail" vs. "museum." It's better for kids than one might expect. And if you're in the market to buy a variety of antiques, not just cars, you can find some at this place. (They really charge high prices for the cars, but there are some deals in there) We raced through the place in about 2-1/2 hours and didn't quite cover the whole place. You could easily spend 5 hours in the place or more. It's much more than cars, but you've got to love old stuff. It's a funny sort of place that's run by a big family. The family members sort of segregates the place in terms of what family members take care of which parts of the various business units. So much so, they almost seem to resent each other. (I got that opinion almost directly from one of them) It's sort of funny, but beyond that, the place does seem to run with some harmony. Give them a visit. read more

This review is not for the facility itself, but for an extremely rude and abrasive employee who has helped make our decision never to return. As a frequent visitor and collector of classic cars, my husband received numerous email invitations to attend a special event on Saturday, May 25. According to the invitation, if you brought a classic car to display in a special area of the museum, everything was free for the day. Given the weather, we didn't bring the car but wanted to enjoy the rest of the museum. We had apparently misunderstood all the communications touting free admissions; that wasn't available to us since we did not bring the car to display. When we attempted to enter the "car corral", this very rude woman told us to buy tickets in the museum. My husband asked about the communications he received stating free admission and, instead of just explaining the misunderstanding, she started yelling things such as, "nothing is free", "you have to pay to get in Great America, why wouldn't you have to pay at least as much here", "you never received any such brochure; get it and show it to me". Even as we were walking away she continued her tirade. I have never experienced such animosity and poor behavior from a representative of an organization in my life. While we would have purchased tickets and spent time there had this woman behaved with any amount of courtesy, that was not the case. She is a terrible representative of this facility. As residents of Libertyville we have frequented the Volo Auto Museum for many events over the years. Because of this woman, we will not be returning. read more

Such a neat way to spend the afternoon with the family. We paid extra to visit the private car collection, which included cars owned by Michael Jordan, Oprah, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Charlie Sheen, etc. - what moved me most there was Princess Diana cars and the unpublished photos of her. I'm not necessarily a car junkie, but this was a neat place and I would want to bring out of towners here for something different. read more

5 stars because WOW there is just nothing like this place! It feels so science fiction btw if u go during the week on a mild winter day when no one is there but your family and a few others. One girl at the pizza parlor didn't treat my dad too well, which was upsetting. I love The Terminator and they had a model of the full metal terminator that you can view up close. I wasn't keen on the vintage ads they have posted up on the wall in one location that are extremely condescending towards women. It's not a boys club. It's a family place. And either way, "chicks" dig sci fi and race cars too. Not to mention this also gives the impression that men who like cars and trucks are sexist pigs which is just not true. So I hope they are down the next time I visit. Last but not least there should be a warning sign outside the Vietnam war room as it is not kid friendly in the least and could potentially trigger PTSD in vets. It totally freaked out my toddler who started crying and screaming once we were in there. read more

Not one, but two mini theaters, an entire showroom dedicated to Hollywood Star Cars and movie stuff galore! The Duesenberg room has to be seen to be believed. It will take your breath away, I know of no other attraction like it anywhere. My husband, 4-year old son, and I came to visit on a Tuesday during our Spring Break from work (we both work in schools). We wanted to get our son out of the house and go on an "adventure." After looking at pictures online, we decided that we couldn't go wrong with Volo Auto Museum since our son owns hundreds of Hot Wheels Cars. So we packed up and drove an hour to Volo. As soon as we pulled up, I was a little worried. There was a rather run-down looking playground and signs directing us where to buy tickets. The outside of the museum was just not very pleasing to the eye. We made it in and saw the batman display on the way to buy tickets and it seemed that maybe we hadn't wasted a drive. We paid $30 for two adult tickets. Staff members were pleasant enough so I did not have that rude-staff experience that other people seemed to have. We were offered a map and given a run down of what we would see during our visit and how to get to it all. The map was hand-drawn and just unprofessional looking. We made it through the first showroom and our son was ready to go. He was just not impressed. There were plenty of exhibits that were geared towards kids but they were small and just not very exciting. After dragging him through the whole place, we made it to the Tow Mater and Lightning McQueen display where we thought for sure that our son would lose his mind to the excitement of seeing these cars in real life. Again, this did not happen. Also, we tried to take pictures by both of these cars but there was a guy servicing the souvenir penny machine which was right in between these two cars. He was on his cell phone and moving around the machine which meant we had to use awkward angles to keep him out of the pictures. Then our son was hungry but after seeing the dried up frozen pizza on the spinning warmers, I knew I was not going to be feeding him there. I was happier feeding him McDonald's than risking spending more money on something that might either make us sick or that we would just throw away. I just do not see how these people have given so many good reviews. While there wasn't anything specific that made our visit terrible, it just was not worth two hours in the car and $30. Our son had more fun looking at the pictures online than he did seeing them in person. My husband and I felt so bad that we disappointed our son that we are taking him to Chuck E. Cheese tomorrow and I hate that place! We really wanted this place to be fun for our family but it wasn't and we will not be back. read more

We had a wonderful experience at the museum. Are children loved the experience, they are 10 and 6. They have watched multiple older movies and the best part was seeing our children's faces experiencing the cars from their favorite movies. Our experience with the staff was very pleasant. It's one of the few places you can't visit just once. We go 2 times a year. It's always changing, there's always something new to see or fun to do. I've been going to Volo on and off for a few years. The selection of cars to see and buy is unbelievable. Next year are my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. My dad's first car was a 1962 Chevy Impala. So one rainy day, with nothing really going on, I thought I'd stop by to se if they had one. Walking down the first aisle, I saw the telltale rear end of the Implala but wasn't sure of the year. I couldn't believe it was a '62! To cut to the chase, I bought it. The car runs fine and was given a good once over by the Volo staff. I'll definitely be going back next time I am in the market for a vintage car. read more
