I spotted the store when we were driving around looking for parking and we decided to check it out when we were walking up the road. I was very hopeful for finding items. They had quite a few brand new records but not nearly enough used. Prices on some of the used stuff was higher than I was hoping for. I did find a Tchaikovsky album that I am excited to listen to. They also had a selection of CDs in the store. Quite a few people were shopping and it was a nice store. The gentleman working there was taking care of newer merchandise and was quite friendly. If I was local I would probably shop here more often. read more

A must-visit for me whenever I'm in AVL. Might just be well-suited for my personal tastes, but the selection at this place is phenomenal for its small size, including some really rare finds. Especially when it comes to metal and prog, but I've also bought plenty of jazz and hip hop from here. I always end up buying several things even when I tell myself to restrict myself to only things I have to have. Well-organized, nice owner, lots of band merch too. read more

For downtown record stores this is a decent place. It's a bit beat up on the inside but it does house a decent selection of new and used. One thing that stood out to me was the large selection of classical records. It's good to see a downtown store house so many classical records. read more

If you are a rock fan, this might be up your alley, I'm not sure. Some decent reissues overrun by grey market european reissues and forgettable used selection in all genres outside of rock. Pretty store, but I get the feeling they cater to a sort of touristy "ohh people still like records?!" crowd. I can't see myself visiting regularly if I lived in the area. Pass. read more

Reasonable selection of all genres on vinyl and some cds. Prices are competitive. The condition of the records we looked at were all excellent with no scratches or visible wear. The album covers ranged from very worn to near excellent. The shop is very small, but the staff is friendly and helpful. Note: parking in the area can be a challenge. read more

Another cool little record store in downtown Asheville. A nice selection of alternative reissues with a mix of hip hop, blues and rock. I was able to find a Portugal. The Man "The Satanic Satanist " and could have left with several other titles. Something different here was a fresh section of used vinyl both old and new. also a smattering of cassettes as well. Engaging your customers is key to a successful business, store was half empty not much inventory and not a friendly person was working there. As a visitor that is an immediate turn off, I walked around with a record I intended to purchase but just on principle alone I put it back and left. I visited three other Record stores in the area while here in Asheville this was by far the worst will not return to this store. read more

I like this place. I'm from out of town, and I visit about twice a year, and I make a point to visit this place. It has historical significance for me, as it's been around for a while, my nephew and I have bought many records here in the past. If you are expecting a scene from "high fidelity" you might be disappointed. But, if you're like me, and like to be left alone, you'll probably dig this place. Some of the other reviewer's whine about the price, sure, some of the new release prices are high, but I'm supporting an INDEPENDENT STORE. If you have a problem with something that's maybe $.50 more a dollar more than some chain store, you don't belong here. This is a place where you support local business, show up and buy something. As far as atmosphere is concerned, it's small, quirky, personal, and the person usually behind the desk will chat with you if you chat them up. I managed to find a couple of very cool new releases, and some awesome older records and very fine shape. I'm happy. I'll be back next time I'm in town. read more

Neat little record store. Has a huge selection of older music. If you're looking for something from the past, you've probably got a good chance of finding it here. As far as new music and newer releases go, it's not a huge selection but a decent one. They can order whatever you're looking for too. Prices are a little high on something's (not much higher than online) but this is a local business you're supporting and you don't have to wait for it to be shipped to you. I'll def be going back here bc rotation of albums seem to be frequent since vinyl is popular right now and they do buy your used albums. read more

I was willing to give this store a chance, despite the alarming reviews on Yelp (mostly because the record store employee manning the desk was a woman and the one in the complaints on yelp was a man, so we figured "different employee, we won't have that problem"). Now, we didn't get cussed out, but the woman behind the counter was rude and unresponsive. When we asked a question, she wouldn't even look at us and her one word answer was dripping with a tone of voice that screamed "I just want you people to go away". Maybe the problem was that it was over 95 degrees and there was no AC...or maybe only rude people work here...either way, save yourself the trouble and go to Static Age Records two stores down. read more

Great record shop. A very good used section with reasonable prices. I found 2 lps quickly off my want list in VG + condition. One had a minor scuff and the owner played for me right away. Love that kind of service. But what really excited me about this shop was the new / repress selection especially in the blues and soul/ r&b many of the need to have in your collection lps like Merry Clayton - Gimme Shelter and Marvin Gaye's - What's Going On, etc. But the "I need to make a comment" moment came when I was looking through the new/repress section I stumbled across Steamhammer's - Mountains lp this is a killer heavy prog/ blues rock lp that needs to be apart of a rock'n rollers record collection. Good selection of re-issue 12" LP's of Funk, Soul, Jazz and Reggae classics. In the Jazz section (which is large) there are a lot of nice gems (org presses). There is a large Rock section and decent sized Swing Vocalist section, but I have never really dug thru either. I have dug in the country section a bit and have found some good records too. All the used records are in very good condition and the store is organized well. There are virtually no 45's other than a small batch of Punk, Indie and Local that live in a little box near the counter. As a side note, there is a dope selection of vinyl and musical inspired postcards. I recommend getting some coffee at Izze's a couple of doors up and then going into Voltage for a long dig. Disappointed...everywhere online the shop hours are posted and say they're open til 7pm. Arrived at 5:07pm just to see them closing up shop, with new temp hours posted on the door. Oh well...sad to say we don't have time left on our trip to revisit during "new hours" read more

I don't live in Asheville, but have family there and have been visiting Voltage Records on my annual trips to town for at least the past five years. I'm a fervent supporter of independent records stores and always find a few great albums to buy when I stop in. This past Christmas, my girlfriend thoughtfully bought a double-LP there that she'd seen me eying. When I opened it up though, I found that it contained two copies of the same record instead of the the two different ones that should have been inside. We were staying in a town a few hours from Asheville and so I decided to make a quick stop into the store to exchange it for a complete copy before flying out of Asheville on the last day of our trip. So a few minutes before noon on Dec 29, the two of us swung by to make the exchange and had the most unpleasant, even frightening experience I've ever had in any store. The guy working there told us he didn't have another copy but we could exchange it for store credit. We explained that we didn't have a lot of time to burn browsing for something else and weren't from the area and thus wouldn't be able to cash in store credit another day. My girlfriend requested that, given that the item we'd purchased was defective and he couldn't replace it, he give us a refund. He expressed an increasing level of annoyance and explained that the store's policy was to only give store credit, not refunds and said it "wasn't his fault" the record set was defective. My girlfriend calmly explained that she expected the store to stand behind the products it sold, and he blurted out "fine, here's your f***ing money" and slammed the cash on the counter before telling her to get out. I was away from the counter and hadn't noticed the words he'd used, just the tenseness of the exchange. I smiled tentatively at my girlfriend as if to say "thanks for dealing with that" and he proceeded to tell me to "wipe that f***ing smirk off my face." I asked him what the problem was, and he got increasingly belligerent and swore some more as he told us to both get out. His body language and tone of voice suggested he was a step away from jumping over the counter to take a swing at me. We left and will never shop there again, nor will any of our friends and family in town now that they've heard about this experience. I do not know if the guy we dealt with that day was the owner or just an employee (either way, he's usually there), but as long as he's associated with the store, I want nothing to do with it. I'm well acquainted with and even expect a bit of surliness and condescension from record store employees, but this was something altogether different. It's hard to fathom how anyone could get so violently angry over a $20 return and inexcusable to speak to either of us that way. Most guys I know there would have punched him in the mouth for what he said to my girlfriend alone, and while I abhor violence, I feel like he deserved at least that, although I'd settle for him losing his job. So anyway, if you live in the area, do stop by Voltage Records if you enjoy being verbally assaulted. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. The dude who was working there was so incredibly rude, it blew my mind. I was there in December, and I know that record store employees are not traditionally known for their warm and cuddly customer service, but this was beyond the pale. There is just no good reason for a record store employee to drop f-bombs on his customers, especially when they are being perfectly polite to said employee! I think this guy might be a sociopath. read more

This was the second store we visited after Static Age during our quick afternoon stop in Asheville. We spent quite a bit of time leafing through their record bins which were slightly too high for 5'6" me to see all the way to the back but was otherwise very easy to flip through. We found one or two things that suited us but it's mostly good for some classic rock, popular records from the 60s and 70s and jazz. No electronic, industrial, punk, new wave, no wave or any of that obscure stuff from the 80s and 90s. No metal either. read more

Cool little shop for classic rock some jazz and the just in bin is stocked with new and used LPs pretty regularly. I have found some true gems in there from time to time. Worth checking out. The owner has always been polite to me (if a little quiet) and will order obscure stuff for you, if he has a distributor that stocks it. As for the girl behind the counter she's hit or miss. Some times friendly, sometimes she keeps to herself. But if you're not rude to her she won't be rude to you. It's a decent record store. If you have the time check it out. read more

Goodwill has trouble offloading those on customers for 50c. Either the vinyl market is absolutely insane in Asheville, or this place never sells anything. Thumbed through their cheap crates and various genres for about 5 minutes before I realized how rediculous everything was priced and then walked out. Good selection of new and used vinyl and displayed in a way that actually permits enough space in the bins to easily browse - this in contrast to those record stores that pack the bins so tightly that you can't browse through them easily. Great record store with consistent good stock of new reissues and originals. Definitely top pick in Asheville for collectors of Jazz LPs. Not so much in the way of 45s, but the selection in everything else makes up for it. Nice assortment of basic essentials, blues, country, soul, punk, rock 'n' roll, comps and foreign. (also t-shirts and the coolest cd box sets if you're into that) Ideal for the enthusiast of older music, but with some newer trendy stuff thrown in. Nothing but helpful and pleasant exchanges with the owner who has done me a lot of favors as a loyal customer over the years. I'm a vinyl nut and live in Asheville, but had never visited Voltage until today. I usually go to Harvest and Static, just a few doors down. The main reason I had not visited Voltage was due to the negative reviews seen here. I can truthfully say that I love this (Voltage) store. I don't like to be bothered by clerks while looking through the stacks, and I was left alone to do my thing. I found 7 very clean and nice Classic Rock albums for less than $20 bucks total. The clerk behind the counter was very nice and I complimented him on having such a nice shop. The selection of thousands of records is fantastic, and they are very nicely organized by genre, major artist name, etc. I just don't understand people who bitch and give low star ratings because the seller did not have a particular album they were looking for or their spoiled brat asses are to hot from lack of air conditioning. These same folks probably have "save the planet" bumper stickers on their cars. Hats off to Voltage for being a great store; I'll be back many times. read more
