Huge thanks to Von at Von's Violin Shop today. I'd been dealing with a really frustrating problem for a while: either the G or D string would barely speak unless I pressed extremely hard with my left hand. The weird part was that whenever I changed one of those strings, the new one would suddenly respond much more easily... and then the other one would start having the same issue. It kept switching back and forth and was driving me crazy. It turned out the bridge was crooked. My untrained eyes couldn't really tell so I didn't think that was the problem. Von carefully adjusted it and also shared some great stories from his years in the business, including working with Isaac Stern. That combination of skill and genuine care meant a lot. Really grateful. Prior to this, I also had my bows rehaired here and their pricing is fairly reasonable. If you're in the Denver area and need violin work done right, this is the place. read more

I'm so pleased with my violin repair. I loved the sound before and couldn't image it better. I bought a good quality violin 7 years ago and had only had one repair when the sound post fell. Derek at Von's saw the the post was too short, I needed a new bridge. I was hesitant. But the difference is night and day. Derek also repaired a crack under the tailpiece and a seam repair. I'm virtually playing a whole new violin. So very happy with the experience I need a rehair next, and to keep everything humidified properly so it remains a beautiful violin. Wow! Perfection! I have never had perfection!!!! If you have a ridiculously long neck like I do and have to customize your chin rest, go see Derek! So glad I complained to him about it!!!! So reasonably priced as well! I would have paid $200 for this. Having the ability to properly support my instrument is going to level up my playing in ways I could have only dreamed of before! I would strongly caution coming here to get repairs. While at first I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced everything was, I received a call from the luthier stating that the repair cost had increased by approximately 60%. The man that I originally spoke to said the chin rest was in good condition, but the luthier said that he was a business owner and wasn't knowledgeable about the inner workings of the violin and that the entire chin rest had to be replaced. Rather than waiting for me to say yes to the new cost, the luthier did the repairs without my consent. When I pointed this out, he stated he tried to call me but the phone hung up so he went ahead with the repairs because he was very busy. Lastly, Von's had the violin for a week and it took the luthier just shy of an hour to repair the violin. They had that entire time to connect with me about the new cost and instead they made a weak attempt to contact me, did the repairs, then called me again and left a voicemail stating the repairs were done. This is not good business. You don't take your car in for an oil change just to come back and find that the mechanic went ahead and replaced the alternator. Good business practice is ensuring the customer is aware of any change in cost than what was originally quoted and receiving consent for that new cost. As well as having the integrity to not throw your co-workers under the bus. Since I've posted this review the business owner called me back and initiated a refund for the extra cost. I'm glad to have spoken with him. read more

I came in desperately trying to find someone who would buy the violin my ex-fiance purchased from Gorsett Violin shop. Gorsett is a horrible place and they should be ashamed for ripping my fiance off when they sold her that violin. The violin was in really bad shape and had a lot of warping in the wood and bridge, which was evident to the layman's eyes when Von took it out of it's case and showed it to me. Gorsett should have NEVER sold us that thing and the owner who was the one who sold it should be ashamed of herself for taking advantage of people like that. It was a disaster. Von saved us a lot of problems and possibly from even going homeless by offering us a fair price. Not only that, but when he saw me break down in tears after receiving an offer from him, he and his wife spent upwards of 30 minutes genuinely curious about my problems and offered some of the best advice and emotional support I've ever received. I love Von. After hearing him speak and describe his knowledge of the violin thoroughly I knew I was extremely fortunate to have found him. I don't think it's fair at all that someone would rate him 1 star out of 5 just because they didn't bother to call ahead and check. Everyone who uses Google maps or other such listings often knows that their hours can often be wrong, especially for small businesses who don't have time or the skills to manage so many online listings. Von has saved my life! I broke my bridge and have multiple recitals next week, so I was freaking out. I took my violin in on Tuesday, and I've already gotten it back with a new bridge. It sounds amazing. He also fixed a hole that was left by a fine tuner. Von's also has a good selection of instruments for sale. I didn't end up buying one from them either, but they were very helpful and didn't hold it against me when I came back with a violin from somewhere else. read more

Took my broken cello to other shops who couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Then finally took the advice of many and took it here, and they correctly diagnosed it within seconds! Von and his wife are positively lovely, and such a pleasure to do business with. Very reasonable prices, and outstanding work. Von's Violin Shop is the best! I took a two year break from violin and needless to say it really needed major work done. I told him to go for it and fix whatever he thought he needed and it was really fascinating to watch him pin point all the problems without me even telling him. He also knew where my violin came from and even the origins of the maker. The man not only knows his stuff, but is clearly passionate which is such a joy to see. My violin sounds great, my bow is fantastic and he even gave me advice on the type of rosin I should be using. He even gave my family and I free tickets to see a quartet as a little bonus. Von's Violin Shop is just what you might imagine a skilled luthier's shop would be. Upstairs in a nice neighbohood, a cross between quaint and fashionable. He and his wife provide the personal touch to everythng. He is a skilled craftsmen. I purchased my current cello from him. Not only is it an outstanding instrument, but he had pains takingly set it up, starting by allowing it to settle in to the Colorado climate. The pegs fit great. I really like his bridge, which is both well shaped and beautiful. Their gentle manner is as unassuming as their knowledge of these instruements great. I highly recommend them for purchases, repairs and adjustments. read more
