Two star review just because the original agent who showed me the apartment in Washington Heights was very kind in person. But that's where the good ends. Last week I saw an apartment, liked it, applied for it, even provided a "deposit in good faith" which I have now learned is ILLEGAL in New York. Within a day, I was verbally approved for the apartment, which I know means nothing, however, I have a third party guarantor that was accepted and signed the apartment up in their systems and the policy was issued within 30 minutes for coverage on a 12 month lease. Ultimately, the apartment had been taken off market after the deposit. bit of time passes by and I receive a phone call explaining that there was some worry about a section in the guarantor's agreement around renewals and that the guarantor would not renew me for a renewal lease. I of course had read that agreement before I signed and know that is not what it said; it said that for any lease extension or renewal, I'd just need to resubmit my financial documentation to the guarantor for review/approval. Prior to submitting any application, the broker who I had been working with, and am not continuing to work with them, shared my specific situation as to why I had a guarantor that had qualified me for up $3100 a month in rental coverage. Currently, I am in a chapter 13 bankruptcy. Over the past 15 years, I have dealt with my mother being killed in a freak accident, five years after that my father being diagnosed with advanced vascular dementia and then him passing a few years later. I took on many financial responsibilities by choice to help my father in settling unmasked financial doings that my mother did behind his back, as well as becoming my father's legal caretaker when he became ill. So forgive me for exhausting my personal resources and doing what had to be done for my father. When the pandemic hit, my brother and sister-in-law lost jobs and their home, they also had my niece and nephew who were a newborn and a toddler at the time...guess what...Uncle stepped in to help to the best of my abilities. I have been renting the same apartment in Chicago for the past 17 years; I even have the renewal lease to decide on by the end of March for year 18. In addition to having the most amazing references that can be provided, and lastly, $30k to pay rent. I'm glad that yesterday I finally received the deposit back. But am laughing as I just received notification that the apartment I applied for and been re-listed to the market...at $100 less than what I was willing to pay. I had even asked if it would be possible to negotiate for $2250, was told no, and still agreed with the $2295...yet here I am, denied. I finally received the deposit back yesterday, thankfully. But I can assure you that this process has been nothing but disappointing. It's so shameful how people and companies act and would think that with all that is going on in the world, would do their best to understand. Absolutely disgraceful.

I had a confirmed viewing with (Voro, LLC) at +1 (347) 339-9613 on June 21 at 3 PM for the unit at 24-19 43rd Street #3, Astoria. She confirmed again at 2:30 PM as I was on the way from Brooklyn. I arrived at 3:07 PM after paying $66 for Lyft, only to be told the apartment was no longer available. No prior notice. Complete waste of time and money. Extremely unprofessional.

College student applied to live in Brooklyn apartment that Parkoff aka New Park Management manages. They do not do lease signings on line via docusign. Required her to make a one day trip from Chicago to sign her lease in person would not make an exception. I even offered to go in person and have her facetime with them. They made the appointment at 5pm after regular business hours when no one else was in the office. Scott started off by talking about how there are roaches & mice and that no rent reductions would be given except in case of a fire. He said who cares about mold and disparaged other renters who have suffered floods/leaks etc. When I explained that we needed to get the lease signed as it was now after 6pm and she had a flight to catch back to Chicago. He escorted us out of the building and said he could not be rushed and that we would have to reschedule the lease signing. Scott Kiaer even threatened to call the police if we followed him back into the building. A college student flew in from Chicago for the day just to get this lease signed so she could move for school! Scott Kiaer acted unhinged! Sam Beniaminian claimed to not know Scott's last name. Low and behold when I did a google search of Parkoff Managment they were involved in a discrimination lawsuit and let their buildings fall into states of disrepair. Run don't walk away from this company! The Fair Housing Justice Center (FHJC) announced today that it has filed yet another lawsuit against New York real estate behemoth The Parkoff Organization A/K/A Parkoff Operating Corp. and its management company New Park Management LLC. Parkoff is one of the area's largest real estate organizations, owning and operating over 4,000 rental units throughout the city. Also named as defendants in the complaint are building owners Hawthorne Gardens LLC, Henry Hudson Gardens LLC, Netherlands Property Assets LLC, 75-76 Third Avenue Assets III LLC, and York 80 LLC; real estate companies Advanta Real Estate A/K/A Advanta Service Center, Queens Apartment Realty LLC, Contact Realty Corp. A/K/A Contact Realty II Corp., and Compass Inc. A/K/A Compass Realty, and real estate agents Matthew Scott Miguel, Samuel Beniaminian, Diego Hidalgo, Michael Lee, and Kevin Loh. The complaint details Parkoff's long history of repeatedly discriminating against prospective tenants. It was sued in 1991 for race discrimination at seven buildings in Manhattan and the Bronx, and again in 2017 by the FHJC for race, source of income, and family status discrimination at two buildings in Brooklyn. Notably, Parkoff was also sued by the City in 2021 for allowing nine of their buildings to fall into such disrepair and hazardous condition that the City alleged its actions constituted public nuisances and unlawful harassment of its tenants.
