While the Cadillac Ranch is iconic on Route 66, the Bug Ranch is actually more fun. It is designed like a park to walk through and has a convenient parking lot directly out front. There is a location behind the main park set up with a snack bar, mini golf, paint ball, and souvenirs along with cans of spray paint to use in the park itself. They could do with better advertising for the snack bar and store, it wasn't immediately obvious. I do recommend checking it out though, nowhere near as crowded as Cadillac Ranch and just as much fun! read more

What a fun place. There's a lot of creativity on these vehicles there's 10 Volkswagen's and other cars also including a Big Texan limo. You take your own spray paint and you can spray any of the vehicles. And even the sidewalks are painted. I found a can of spray paint and had to put our initials and also put INDY. read more

Another art installation where you can spray paint vehicles. Something so alluring about spray painting a vehicle. Located on the I-40 access road this ranch has a large metal entrance sign and concrete walkways. There are a few VW bugs, planted head first in the ground, facing the road. Behind them is a row of limousines, planted trunk down and long horn hood ornaments up. Those limos stick way up and climbing them to paint the hoods seems quite a feat. During our visit in December, a small crew were removing spray paint from the walkways. Keepin' it tidy. A small, dirt parking area is available for visitors. A nice little stop to stretch you legs, get some photos and enjoy the day. read more

Ok so I hate to be the one to tell everyone this BUT Slug Bug Ranch is much better than Cadillac Ranch. Neither are amazing but Slug Bug is better. They are both similar but this one is newer and better. You park right in front so it is much easier for people who are disabled. There are more cars and things to paint and it is set up a bit nicer. Very close to Cadillac Ranch so it's easy to visit both. read more

Obviously derivative of the Cadillac Ranch on the west side of Amarillo but don't let that stop you from this small detour that is immediately off the interstate. Doubly so if you still have leftover paint from there. Five Volkswagen Beetles, buried nose down in the ground. They've been stripped down to the bare metal but they're still easily accessible and located next to a gas station and some other buildings that closed a few years ago. Colorful for quick photo ops and not too far from the freeway. Like another yelper said it's much smaller than Cadillac ranch and not as picturesque of a backdrop, but an easy, fun stop for road trips. :) There was a bag hanging off one of the cars with extra spray paint cans so we got a chance to spray paint our initials. So if you didn't bring any paint there's a chance there's a bottle somewhere! read more

Ready for another review about some other old cars on I-40 (Route 66)? This time, they are VW Bugs. These particular cars bring back a memory from my teen years... the quick story is below. The location pin was in the wrong place, but we stumbled upon it while thinking we missed it! It is corrected now. It is on the East side of Amarillo on the I-40 Frontage Road. This place doesn't get the same kind of love as the Cadillac Ranch. With that being said, the cars are spray painted just like the other place. We were the only people present when we stopped by. And look! There's no trash strewn around! I didn't get out of the car to take photos. It was muddy, so I didn't want to traipse through it. I had my husband drive to just the right places and I snapped the pictures. He was a good sport! There are 4 Bugs stuck in the ground at the same angle. With the lack of foot traffic, there is plant life growing up the vehicles. In the same property sits another old relic... Here's my short true story: When I went shopping for my first car, a used car, I decided to take a look at a Powder Blue VW Bug. We were set to take a test drive. My mom was attempting to get into the back seat when her foot touched the ground... yes, the floor had rusted out & her foot broke through, probably from all the salt on the roads in MO. Needless to say, I didn't buy any car from their lot. I am glad we stopped by to see it, however, a second visit is not necessary. If you've got a few minutes to spare and want to check it out, I'd say, "Go for it". read more

I liked this better than Cadillac Ranch. It is creepier because of the abandoned buildings next to it and feels less touristy. If you are into creepy buildings and spray painting cars, then by all means stop and take a look. Worth a peek. read more

Google maps had the location wrong initially so just know it's out there kind of by the Love's. It's not as big as the Cadillac Ranch, but it's pretty much the same thing, and the abandoned buildings next to it that you can also paint add another level of grittiness to this site. read more

Another fun little side stop while in the Amarillo area. Not as iconic as Cadillac Ranch, but, I bet when you go, you'll be all by yourself! Again, you can paint on the cars, or just look at all that is left behind by others. It's an old gas station that is now abandoned, and while attempting to salvage his business from the up and coming Love's across the way, the original owner tried to make his very own Cadillac Ranch. It didn't quite pan out, but nonetheless, it's a pretty cool place to visit and imagine what it must have been like back in it's day! read more

It was much drier here when I came than the Cadillac Ranch. Similar concept, less famous but almost cooler. Better places to spray paint. Off the beaten path a bit but worth a stop-- especially if you are driving to OKC from Amarillo. I split off and took back roads on my way to Dallas. It is about 20 miles outside of downtown Amarillo, in the City of Conway, towards OKC It is not in as a good shape as Cadillac Ranch, but there are less people and it is different surroundings, including a abandon gas station. It's like the Cadillac Ranch just down the road in Amarillo, except with old VW Beatles. Basically, someone stripped down about 10 or 15 Beatles to their steel cage & buried them in the dirt. They're sticking out of the ground at a 45 degree angle & covered in graffiti. File this one under "Bizarre Roadside Attractions". And also under "Awesome". read more

I love Amarillo's public art. It is always done with humor and encourages interaction. Every time we pass through Amarillo we stop to see one of their many installations. Cadillac Ranch (I40, Exit 60) was the first of its kind, and for that reason, will always remain my favorite, but the VW Bug Slug and the Giant Pair Legs (I27 and Sundown Lane) are worth visits too. I would warn, however, with the VW Bug Slug that the building next to it clearly sees regular drug activity so not a place I would visit if the sun isn't high. read more
