As a parent, I will be as honest as I can. We were deciding between Hockaday, Ursuline and a coed…read moreschool. Our daughter got into all three. We ultimately decided on Hockaday because of what we were told by the administration. They left out very important pieces. First, they are again looking for another Head of school. They have a leadership problem for sure. Secondly, the upper school parents are given actual grades only twice a year. Mid year (when it is too late to do anything about 25% of their grades) and the final grade at the end of the year. There is not computer access to test scores or even scheduled parent teacher conferences. You are expected to have your child do all of this with the help of their advisor. Their advisor is a teacher at the school who has to work with all the teachers that the girls do not like. The advisors tell the girls things like "whatever your teacher says, is the final decision." This is in regards to things like what class your child can take next year. If your child has amazing test scores from other schools and on all her standardized tests but this one teacher who has only known your child for months says your kid can't do the work, your child will be demoted. This is true for all Math classes, Science classes and Foreign language classes. The biggest kicker is we are paying over $35,000.00 a year for this school - not our daughter and not the teachers. Hockaday does not see to understand that we are the clients. The teacher shortage also means that the administration supports the teachers who should not be working at a top tier private school. Ask any girl and they will list 5 teachers who everyone dislikes. The administration doesn't care. In fact, they specifically say that the girls can ask for schedule changes for any reason except they don't want the teacher they are assigned. Seems odd they would ever have to put that if all the teachers were as good as they claim. The parents pay more tuition than state colleges but the girls are not allowed to pick their classes or teachers. Think about that for a minute. So how about that epic education? Nope, they have so many days off for holidays and random stuff that the classes are rushed and the girls are stressed more than the boys at their brother school St. Mark's. In fact, St.Marks continues to be in the top 5 for schools nationwide and Hockaday is about 150. I personally think it is because my child was an A student at her other schools but Hockaday is a completely different story. For the first time, my child gets c's. This is in classes like English, History and Spanish. The teachers first will give special privileges to lifer hockaday students because those girls "already know how we do things here at hockaday". Interesting because those are the girls who never score as high as the new students who have to actually have the scores and intelligence to get into Hockaday at High School. Everyone is accepted in Kindergarten - as long as you can pay. The English teachers feel you can only get an A if you see them every day and are their little pet. That is not possible if your child has extra curricular activities for the 3 hours required by coaches every single day. The kids make appointments during their breaks and rarely eat because they use lunch time as a conference time. Yes, all the teachers want you to be in their class constantly. A good teacher, teaches the complete lesson in the time allotted. It's called time management and consideration for other people. Spanish is ridiculously hard. Take Latin or French if you want an A. My best advice is don't be stupid like us and pay $35,000 a year (plus all of the fundraising requests) to a school that will cause your child to not get into an Ivy League or top tier school. Luckily, the college counselors who have never been accepted to an Ivy will give you suggestions like Gettysburg college. Also, they spend a huge portion of their money towards sports. We have all kinds of sports fields going in and not a single reason why we should not take our daughter out of school. Luckily, they have some random woman who requires the girls to spend hours doing things like pretending they are poor, talking about being privileged, and forced community service to whatever is the most humiliating. They have spoken to the girls for hours this month about being stressed. THEY ARE THE ONES STRESSING everyone out. The girls NEED their Y hours to visit teachers and do the 7 pages of homework on the internal organs in Spanish 2 not discussing how the counselors made really bad decisions they regret. Also, we buy the lap tops and everything else. Books are not included in tuition. So add another $600 a year. At this point, I think I will be in AA soon if my kid stays at this school.

My daughter went to TCA and ran cross country. She started her first period during a race and it…read moreleaked badly through her shorts. She stopped running and went to her TCA coach to tell her and was given no empathy. At all. In fact, she made her finish the race. The next day my daughter got in trouble for stopping the race at school!

This is my student's first year in high school at the Westwood School as a 9th grader. He wakes up…read moreevery day ready for school and rises to the challenges. That was definitely not me in high school - and I went to a great private Catholic high school. I love that they now have different levels of the IB program to fit each student's goals. The school continues to grow and expand - yet maintain what we love about a caring, smaller community. Yesterday a school in Allen accidentally called me saying that they had my son's phone but could not give me the child's name because there are almost 2k 9th graders, and she did not know. I can't imagine being somewhere that the office staff did not know my kid's name. Everyone at the Westwood School knows my student - and what would best serve him academically and emotionally - as they know what is "normal" or not normal in his every day interactions. I never worry about him during the day as I know he has the most caring community teaching, guiding, supporting, and looking out for him. We can't wait for the beautiful new campus. The tour last week just blew me away as to how amazing it will be for the kids - and I can't wait for our new gym! The teachers are phenomenal and like college level educators! There aren't enough stars for how much this school has made our son confident, caring, and ready for anything life hands him. I don't worry about his future. He believes he can do anything he wants to do in life - and I love everything about this school. There is nothing like it when I talk to all of my other parent friends around the nation - and I am so blessed we found it when he was small.

His experience has been what I had always wanted for him. A place where kids are encouraged to be their personal best - a place where they are encouraged to discover the answer rather than regurgitate it. Pam Butler - the founder - was inspired to start the school based on Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream" speech. It was her dream to have a school foundation based on the content of one's character in a supportive community with personal excellence as the goal. This school has empowered our son to be a confident and independent learner who feels like he can do anything. I highly recommend checking out Westwood for your family, as it is the best kept secret in Dallas.

My son has attended the Performance Course (to prepare for baseball) that is offered in the Summer and he loved it! My daughter is in drill team (Sapphires) and has also been a part of the HS dance team. She's had a great experience with the Art program and entered her pieces into VASE for the 2024-2025 school year. Amazing feedback from her Art teacher! I do feel some situations with teachers in different grade levels can improve as well as overall disciplinary action for students. The main parking lot at the front entrance of the school gets pretty packed during lunch time to where you have to park alongside the curb in the fire lane. They did make designated "visitor parking" but that gets taken quick. Security is on campus and I.d. is required before entry. Love our pep rally days and how involved the student body participates, as well as staff involvement. Our principal is great with motivating our children and keeping a positive vibe, not just for incoming Freshman but overall for the students. Nurses and Counselors are helpful as well as the front desk ladies assisting with check ins and all student related situations. #DUBEAST#ItsagreatdaytobealiveandagreatdaytobeaRAIDER!

Unless your family has the resources to donate large sums of money, the "right" race, or gain favor through employment at the school, you are just a number--tolerated, but never truly included. The school's values are less about Christ and more about class and elitism. A tight-knit inner circle of donors, board members, and influential families call the shots. Everyone else is kept in their place. Diversity at Dallas Christian is performative at best. Minority students are rarely visible outside of athletic teams, and there is a pattern of recruitment that raises serious ethical questions. These students are valued for what they can do on the field or court--not who they are. And yes, there have been documented and disturbing instances where students of color have been called racial slurs, including the N-word, by both peers and staff. Consequences for these actions have been minimal, and accountability is nonexistent. The emotional toll is real. Kids who start off confident and engaged quickly become withdrawn, questioning their worth in an environment that measures value by status. The self-esteem damage lingers long after. Many of the glowing reviews online are not from impartial voices--they are parents on the board, major donors, or paid reviewers. Don't be misled by the marketing or manufactured praise. The reality inside is far different. Meanwhile, families who experience harm are pushed out quietly, without support, and without acknowledgment. Even staff members who happen to be minorities are part of the same exclusionary system--and they know it. There is no safe space here, only a well-oiled machine that rewards compliance and marginalizes difference. If your family doesn't "fit" their mold--racially, politically, or socially--you will be pushed out, one way or another. The environment is not just biased, it is hostile. And they'll use your tuition to do it. With the rise of school vouchers, this kind of systemic discrimination is only going to get easier to hide. If you are a minority family, a values-driven family, or seeking real faith-based education--run. Don't be fooled by the brochures. The truth is much uglier.
