To claim their programming is eclectic is an understatement, and there are many niche categories of music (Celtic, polka, reggae) that can't be found on other stations in the area. The public affairs shows are provocative and entertaining. WAPJ also gives the Lions Clubs a show on Monday nights, Lions Around Connecticut, and I've been lucky to be a guest on the show occasionally. WAPJ covers a large area, including my town of Woodbury where radio reception is spotty, at best. If you're tired of Top 40 and the 300 song format of most commercial stations, WAPJ is a great change for your ears.

I visited the studio last week during their radiothon and was pleasantly surprised with the shows J-Magic's Jambalaya (Where the Guitar is the Star) and Spoonful of Blues. Their commitment to providing free radio (ie free of commercials/ads) is really awesome and they are even available streaming online at www.valleyfreeradio.org. I've had the good fortune to have bombed around a few beach towns over the past couple of years,…read moremostly on the West Coast, but some on the East Coast too. They are fun and generally pretty low key. Unfortunately, if you don't come armed with your own music, the radio in many of these places seems to drift towards "Freebird" and "We Built This City on Rock 'n'Roll". Ugh! I don't mind a yearly dose of Freebird, but that's kind of the end of it for me. Enter WEHM. (http://www.wehm.com/) They call themselves "progressive" which might be a bit optimistic, but they throw in some Cure, X, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, etc. in with their Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, etc. It's definitely a rock station, but a smart one. You won't have to get your plaid shirt and duct taped shorts out any more than your black frock and pancake makeup to listen. They also play just enough new stuff to keep it interesting. One of the things that I always LOVE about these little stations, and by no means is this phenomenon isolated just to small beach towns, is the locally produced commercials. "Hi, I'm Jim, the Car Doctor." "Hi, I'm Rod, the Car Nurse" (Together) "We wanna FIX YOUR CAR" Or whatever. They're always good for a little giggle. WEHM is no exception. They have the surfer dude from the local surf shop giving updates on the tide, etc. Funny stuff. So what, I'm easily amused. If you're on 27E looking for a radio station, you could do a lot worse than this.
