All of the DJs are volunteers and work on their own free time, without pay. I visited the studio last week during their radiothon and was pleasantly surprised with the shows J-Magic's Jambalaya (Where the Guitar is the Star) and Spoonful of Blues. Their commitment to providing free radio (ie free of commercials/ads) is really awesome and they are even available streaming online at www.valleyfreeradio.org. I listen on Tuesday nights, when the above mentioned programs are airing. I hope that VFR continues to be on the airwaves for years to come.

To claim their programming is eclectic is an understatement, and there are many niche categories of music (Celtic, polka, reggae) that can't be found on other stations in the area. The public affairs shows are provocative and entertaining. WAPJ also gives the Lions Clubs a show on Monday nights, Lions Around Connecticut, and I've been lucky to be a guest on the show occasionally. WAPJ covers a large area, including my town of Woodbury where radio reception is spotty, at best. If you're tired of Top 40 and the 300 song format of most commercial stations, WAPJ is a great change for your ears.
