    Shrimp Tempura Bowl
    Sheryl M.

Hmm...if I've never tasted fresh Ahi before, would I like it here? If I've never tasted Poke from Hawaii before, would I like it here? Or, would I like it here only because there isn't anything else like it around, and it has such a cute name? Pretending not to be a local from Hawaii, but a native of Minnesota, I sit here and ask myself these questions in order to objectively write this review. Tough, but here goes. Between appointments at the nearby Mayo Clinic, my partner and I ventured into one of the food courts across the street. Maybe it's not so bad. There were lots of people at this one stall. We read the menu and saw that it was quite large. There was everything from ramen and pho to sushi and poke bowls on it. The specials of the day was a Shoyu Chicken Plate and a Ahi Poke Bowl. I opted to get the Shrimp Tempura Bowl, my partner got the Ahi Poke Bowl, and we shared an order of Spicy Ahi Rolls. Both bowls had mildly seasoned sushi rice on the bottom then topped with shredded carrots, daikon (radish), sprouts, and, diced cucumbers. Sorry, but all this stuff was a turn off. The previously frozen Ahi in the Ahi bowl was simply seasoned with Hawaiian (Rock) Salt and nothing else. It was "okay". The Shrimp Tempura was precooked, overcooked, and served at room temperature. Not good. The Spicy Ahi Rolls were spicy in a good way, but the fish wasn't all that fresh. Fish shouldn't taste fishy. The presentation looked good and the customer service was outstanding. Because of this, and trying to remain objective, I'll give it 3 stars. If I was at home in Hawaii, however, this would easily be a (barely) 2 star review. It isn't likely that we'll be back, but, kudos to Wabi Sabi Express for trying. The locals of Rochester seem to enjoy your food.

Healthy and fresh Japanese food at it's best. The poke bowls are absolutely delicious. The fish and chicken katsu are fried to perfection and hit the spot if you need some comfort food like okasan used to make.

Great place in Rochester to find Japanese cuisine. In addition to classic or specialty fresh sushi rolls, they also have really flavorful hot noodle bowls. My favorite is the spicy combo Sushi Rice Bowl (seasoned rice topped with a variety of veggies, spicy mix of tuna and salmon and finished off with some sauce drizzle). Location might be hard to find - in the newly remodeled 2nd floor First Ave Food court. Sometimes they will have a special of the day, like a special unlisted dish, or free tea or $1 miso soup with a purchase. Wonderful place to visit, whether its for a quick lunch or a place to sit and enjoy some sushi.

Ramen with pork and egg. It's creamy broth but I forget what one it was.

The ramen was very filling but lacked some flavor. Needs a splash of fish sauce or something, lol. I added some soy sauce which made it taste good. The sriracha was extra spicy which I like. The pork and egg were really good. The sushi was good but they didn't have sushi rice, just brown rice which is a weird texture. I liked the filling of the Philly roll and the outside of the scorpion roll. I'd probably go back to try the other ramen they have just cause I love noodles and they're the only ramen place in town!

I love this little hidden gem of a lunch location in the First Avenue Food Court. If you haven't been, GO! The food court is located between Salad Brothers and the sky way, across from the entrance to Newt's. The prices are great, the sushi is good, and the service is friendly. On Monday's miso soup is only $1 (and is a very generous portion), and they have a variety of sushi rolls, bowls, etc. I've only been there twice, but I recommend the spicy tuna roll. Very tasty! But with such a diverse menu, you could eat here every afternoon and rarely have the same thing twice.

Great hot dishes. I love the ramen in the winter months. I haven't tried the sushi yet but it doesn't look anything that special.

I typically get Salmon, Eel, and California Temaki and all of those are genuinely the best you can get in town. They dont even judge me for sometimes getting like 3-4 bowls of miso soup. Its great. Even if im not in the mood for sushi all of their appetizers are delicious and their fried rice is one of the best in town as well. The entire staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The very few times I've ever had something come out incorrect all I had to do was politely point it out and they swiftly fixed the problem, or remade it correctly. They are very fast and super attentive. The restraint itself is very clean and comfortable.

This place does have really good food - no question there. Everything I've had (across teriyaki,…read moretempura, sushi, rolls, handrolls, other apps, soup) has been great. Couple of odd things, one of them keeping me from being there eating dinner right now because I'd -really- like some sushi and they're right down the street: 1. the place has three websites. I'm not referring to the fact there's a North and a South location, or referring to Yelp or anything - just... three different websites. It's strange. 2. They charge a 33% uplift for all-you-can-eat dinner, at near-zero value-add. I know this because I went in, had the dinner, and found out at bill time it was uplifted over lunch... simply by virtue of being dinner. I understand that "dinner", time-wise, tends to mean different portion sizes in other contexts, different staffing levels, it's where you make your money unless you are a bar, etc. And in this case they broaden the menu slightly, adding sashimi as an option. I'm not a chef but I'm thinking that takes less labor to produce than about anything else. On the flip side of that, I'm sure sashimi, if someone was determined, is the fastest avenue for the restaurant to burn through material cost... if someone came in for three hours eating sashimi 5 pieces at a time and got away with it. That's the risk of running any all-you-can-eat offering - sometimes the bull, sometimes the horns. The food, cleanliness, staff etc is, without question, great. I'll definitely eat lunch there in the future.

Recently, I returned to this mall and looked at the options at the food court. I saw Yihi Japan, which is a Japanese stall where you can get teriyaki dishes and more. I have a soft spot for teriyaki fast food at malls. There used to be an excellent one at Markville Mall. When the mall renovated its food court area to be more upscale, this mom-and-pop stall shuttered for good. I decided to try Yihi Japan out. There were three men behind the counter. I was looking at the menu and one of them gave me a chicken morsel smothered in some sweet honey sauce on a toothpick. The chicken was yummy and the light batter around it was delicious. The sauce was too sweet for my liking, but it did have some tang to it that I enjoyed. I am a teriyaki person. The special was beef and chicken teriyaki for $12.59. I decided to splurge and got the beef and shrimp teriyaki with veggies on fried rice for $12.99. The three men were not Japanese. They were Latinos. Never judge a book by its cover. I had yummy pizza in Stockholm several years back. The man who made it was Chinese. I also got a fountain drink with my meal. I ordered a Diet Pepsi. I paid with a credit card. I got my drink first and sipped it as I waited. It was icy cold and hit the spot. One of the men was training another guy at the grill. I waited and watched. He asked if I wanted veggies, including mushrooms. Yes, please! I saw my food get carefully placed in my styrofoam container. Sadly, both my drink and this container were styrofoam. I hope that changes down the road. I let the man who had prepared my food know that he did a great job. He smiled, obviously proud of his accomplishment. I placed my drink on the tray with my food and headed to a table at the food court to chow down. There is wifi available, but it is spotty. It was enough for me to play a game on my phone as I ate. My beef and shrimp teriyaki was yummy. The beef was done perfectly. I loved the mushrooms, broccoli, and other veggies that came with my meal. The shrimp was also done perfectly. They weren't rubbery at all. The sodium level was rather high in the teriyaki sauce and proteins, though. I wish that it wasn't so salty. It became a bit of a vicious cycle to drink more because I was thirsty. Luckily, my feet didn't swell up! Yihi Japan is a nice addition to the food court. A&W has always been there, but it's nice to order food that isn't strictly labelled American at this food court. (21)

She was an absolute gem--friendly, attentive, and genuinely interested in getting to know our family dynamic. Before she left, she was saying, "pass this to mommy, this is grandma's, etc." SO cute! She offered great recommendations, and put some minds at ease for first time sushi goers, which made it all the more fun. I will note that we had some folks doing AYCE, and others ordered Ala carte, and this made no difference to our waitress, or Kumo! The Ala carte portion sizes were huge! The food? Hot, fresh, and delivered with lightning speed. Like seriously, I thought they had secret microphones under the table. We couldn't believe how quickly everything arrived--no waiting around, just one delicious dish after another. And let me tell you, we left so miserably full that we could barely waddle out the door, but it was worth every bite.
