So I pulled into the Cracker Barrel in Gaffney, South Carolina, already halfway prepared to be disappointed and planning my "I told you so" speech for the ride home. We were met at the door by a smiling host who sat us quicker than you can say "y'all come back now." Ann, our waitress, was at the table before I even had the menu open. She grabbed our water and coffee order and took off like she had somewhere to be, which, as it turned out, was right back at our table. We both ordered breakfast, because there are some things in life you don't overthink. Now, I dearly love country fried steak. Somewhere in the Good Book there's probably a footnote that says it's acceptable for breakfast, lunch, and supper. I was already feeling pretty good about my decision when Ann reappeared, unannounced, with a plate of hot biscuits and apple butter. No upcharge, no "would you like to add that for $3.99," just biscuits like God and Dan Evans intended. I have not had that happen in years. One bite of that apple butter and I was suddenly 20 years younger, back when Cracker Barrel was new and my cholesterol was lower and the world seemed a little less complicated. It tasted just like I remembered, which almost never happens anymore unless you're misremembering.
