This restaurant has been around for a while and I've read about it through various Alabama tourism outlets. It has an interesting recent history in that it was destroyed and rebuilt, I believe during the 2011 tornado outbreak. The inside has kind of a fun, local / diner-y feel to it and they had a lot of business during our visit. We had heard they used to serve German food but it appears they no longer do so, as the menu was limited to more classic American lunch fare such as burgers and sandwiches. The prices are quite competitive and fair. Our waitress was okay - not super friendly, though she warmed some when we asked her about the cute chapel across the street. She didn't check on us too much but was timely with our order and request for a check. My dad got a fried bologna sandwich, my mom got a burger, and I tried the "Eric," which is grilled chicken and jalapeños and cheese sandwiched between Texas toast. Dad and I got fries while mom got onion rings. I'd say everything was about average. My parents both said they'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 but agreed a 3 was appropriate when I explained my own internal ranking guide (2 = wouldn't want to go even if a friend asked; 3 = probably wouldn't go again of my own accord but wouldn't complain if someone else asked to try it). The bologna sandwich was very thick cut. My mom said her burger reminded her of a diner style burger and was fine, but to me it didn't look too appetizing. She was disappointed in the onion rings and liked our fries better. The fries were crispy on the outside but a little mealy on the inside. My chicken sandwich got reaaaaally soggy on the bottom and the chicken was cut very thin/in a weird shape, but the jalapeños were pleasantly spicy and the cheese made it nice and gooey. It was a decent sandwich. Glad to have marked an Alabama institution off the list of places to try! As one of the oldest restaurants in the area, there's a lot of history here.

Very cute little bakery inside. Nice places to sit, cute old timey knickknacks and baking relics -- my mom got a huge kick out of the old KitchenAid mixers. Even though it was later in the afternoon, they had a decent selection of desserts. A friendly employee greeted us immediately and was helpful with checkout and bagging. I chose a smaller orange roll based on the recommendation of lots of reviewers, as well as something a bit more unique to me: a sweet potato and pecan muffin. Somewhat unusual combination that sounded super good! I split my treats with husband later that evening. The orange roll was solid -- the soft and yeasty roll was the best part -- though for me the orange glaze was a little too sweet. That's how I usually feel about orange rolls though so if you really love them you'll probably like this one! The muffin remained remarkably moist and the pecans were so nice and toasty on top. It was very subtly sweet and had lots of nice spices. Would love to try more muffins from here! Thanks for the yummy treats! Definitely hope to return someday to try the pie bars, strata, and more.

Greasy with an odd sweet seasoning? Like paprika blended with sugar. Kiddo had the chicken club. He really liked it. The addition of pimento cheese was interesting in a good way. He did not eat his fries, this kid always eats his fries. I liked the vibe of the place, they do live music and that's cool. The service (or lack thereof) is the reason for the 3-star rating. Our server vanished. Never once checked on us, we had to wait 15 minutes after eating for our check. It was so bad that we had to wave down another server to finally get the check.

The interior is decorated really nicely, kind of cool and funky vibes with a surprising amount of space available to hang out. Cute merchandise for sale too. I had a little bit of trouble finding the menu but eventually found it on a paper card placed somewhat inconspicuously near the register. I was only interested in coffee but they have a decent selection of cafe-type food and other beverages. They have seasonal specials and more standard, always-available house specials. I selected one of these and got a small iced Turtle latte, which had chocolate, caramel, and praline flavors. I thought service was a little standoffish and put-upon seeming, but I wouldn't say they were rude; just not super welcoming. My drink was made and served quickly and I got back on the road. The drink was good! Nice balance of ice to liquid and a yummy, sweet, rich turtle flavor. There was a slight artificially nutty aftertaste that I'd guess was the praline that I didn't love, but overall this was a solid drink that I'd probably order again. Give them a try if you're in the area.

The staff still seemed irritable and not friendly, which again made us feel more like an inconvenience than customers. We had to ask multiple times about our drinks and food, which was frustrating. Again, the HIGH prices... On the bright side, there's a nice bookish vibe that gives it that cozy feel. With the exposed bricks/ductwork, mismatched secondhand furniture, and a small selection of books, it does seem like a good spot to relax and chat with friends... Still, I'll be looking for a different coffee place next time! Somewhere the employees attitudes match the chill atmosphere.

It's easy to miss from the outside, but totally worth a visit! The inside is dimly lit, cool, and comfortable. It's not a huge space but arrayed such that one could easily have enough room between themselves and other patrons if privacy was desired. They have lots of super cute knick knacks and an impressive selection of teas. They also have a stage for open mic nights or small musical acts. Seems like a cool space to hang out! Service was the best part. The woman who took my order welcomed me in, helped me select a beverage, and made polite conversation with me while she prepared my drink. She was just so warm, welcoming, affirming, and kind. I felt right at home. Somewhat embarrassingly, I'm far enough removed from the experience that I don't remember exactly what I got. I asked the employee what her favorite specialty drink was and ordered that. In my head, I believe it was something involving cinnamon and white chocolate, but I'm not positive. At any rate, it was a solid drink. I do remember the white chocolate element having a slightly chemical-y aftertaste, which is unfortunately common with white chocolate syrups - or so I feel. Still, it was a solid enough drink that I liked. I'd like to try other menu offerings in the future if the opportunity arises. Definitely recommend for lovely service and a positive environment!
