Jerk chicken cabbage and yellow rice

Not a fan of jamaican food trying well, the first time the restaurant was small, but I guess it's catering to a quick snack and run type atmosphere. The food, what's okay? Cabbage has a little hint of spice or heat The waitress was awesome, very friendly. Like talking to your favorite aunt would definitely go again.

What's up? Wah Gwaan is Jamaican for what's going on, or what's up? Don't be fooled by the location of this somewhat newer Jamaican restaurant in an outlet mall. It's indeed 100% authentic Jamaican fare. I've had my eye on Wah Gwaan all year. They opened in December 2024 and will celebrate one year next month. The location is convenient by H&M. So my suggestion is to park by the bus loop. I noticed most customers carry out. Either way customers order at the counter where there is a menu. I dined in and they do a nice full service china, silverware and table cloth for customers which I really appreciated. They also offer a small bar with wine and beer. They offer a small menu to focus on what they do best. The friendly owner with Jamaican accent took my order. I could not resist getting their oxtails which is a traditional dish, side of cabbage and brown rice with peas. My wife also got a traditional dish of Curry chicken with side of cabbage with white rice and peas. . They offer bottle drinks only. The wait was very short for small rice bowls which we both loved! Then maybe 10 more minutes tops mains rolled out. The food looked and smelled amazing! I chatted up the young lady owner about the place. She said it owned by her and Uncle whom is the cook. My wife first. The Curry Chicken was plentiful and good, but she was a bit overwhelmed by the spice as not use to it. The cabbage is different, she thought it was just ok. Although not perfectly to her liking she enjoyed. My oxtails were the bomb! Tender, juicy packed with flavor. If new to oxtail be prepared for a lot of bone which is normal. Oxtail is the meat off the tail of a cow. I enjoyed the cabbage, it was fresh and crispy, a different take. The portions are served liked dinner entrees, so expect large. Outside of oxtail $26 which is considered a delicacy the items are around $12+. On my opinion fair. Check out at the counter was smooth. You can tip off the card. My overall is I'm impressed with the business, the authenticity of the food and kindness of the staff. My wife was not as big a fan of her dish, but still did enjoy. I think they can retool the experience for customers eating in. Table service and check out would polish them up. This may be too challenging with staffing. 4.5 rounding down and I would return and recommend.

I saw a post on this restaurant on social media and was ready to go the next day! It's by H&M and they have a few seatings in the inside to take a nice break from shopping. The menu was minimal which is fine because it allowed for more concentration on their main dishes. I ordered the oxtail with rice and beans, and potato salad. The oxtail was still a little too tough for me but it had great flavor! The rice and beans were mushy and lacked any flavor. The potato salad was interesting. It had sweet potatoes in it. It added a little sweetness and it was yummy!! The owner was really nice and wish them all the best!

Excellent food and excellent service. I will certainly be a regular. We tried oxtail, jerk chicken, and curry goat. Each dish was phenomenal. The cabbage is phenomenal fresh and tasty. There are several Jamaican beverages to choose from. Dishes are authentic (coming from a Jamaican). There is ample parking as this restaurant is located at the outlet mall in Norfolk. Jody and Uncle Charles are wonderful and will help you choose a meal according to your pallet. Happy Eating Yeeps!!!

I got the oxtails and they are so tender and the flavor is amazing. It's unlike any other Caribbean restaurant I've ever had. Sorry I couldn't give you 10 stars. Delicious!!!

Bear with me here; maybe this goes out into the abyss but I'm still gonna say it…read more Years & years ago I was wandering around the area & came upon Island Krave. It was brand new & the woman tending the store was friendly, energetic & passionate about the food she was serving. I ordered jerk chicken but she insisted on letting me have a taste of everything on the menu. Everything was delicious & I now had a new obsession- the sweet coco bread. For years after that whenever I was around I would pop in. I've since moved to GA and been living here for almost ten years. Any transplant will tell you sometimes only family & food keep you tethered to your home state. So happens this wknd I was in town for my sisters wedding & got my hair done a couple blocks away from Island Krave. As she finished up I placed an order on Uber eats, really excited for this meal- something familiar & missed. To see how the quality & care has declined truly hurts my heart. The portion of meat they served me was actually disrespectful to people who work hard for their money & choose to support a small business. These pictures are after they added some. If you're going to chop it to smitherens you need to measure it out to ensure the portions make sense. Anyone that cooks can tell you this is a thigh at best. & this is a $17 plate. I don't want to talk down on the place too much it's just sad how much of a let down the entire meal was after I felt like they threw my stuff together thinking it was being delivered and they wouldn't have to look me in the face. The Mac was good & the flavor of the chicken was as well. Cabbage mushy & salty. Rice is not yellow. & apparently $5 gets you one slice of coco bread now (I got two bc of my troubles, ha!) Idk I hope they can figure it out but personally I would never spend another dollar in this place.

No salt or anything.. I was so excited to have soft fluffy coco bread. I kid you not; it was like a hot dog bun. So disappointed. We're running out of good options here.

It's the kind of place where you walk in thinking, "Oh nice," and walk out Googling how to recreate the lighting in your own living room. Cozy without being cramped. Trendy without making me feel like my shoes were judged. The food? Listen. I would like to publicly apologize to my taste buds for ever doubting them. Every bite tasted like the chef stood over the plate whispering, "You deserve this." Bold flavors, perfectly cooked, plated like it was about to audition for a food magazine. Now why four stars instead of five? Because I have trust issues. And also because the food came out so good I now have unrealistic expectations for every other meal I will ever eat. That feels like a burden I wasn't prepared to carry. Service was friendly, attentive, and didn't once make me feel bad for asking, "What's that?" three separate times. Water refills were prompt. Smiles were genuine. No one hovered. No one disappeared into the void. Would I go back? Absolutely. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I pretend I discovered it before it was cool? Also yes. Four stars. Only because if I give five, they might get too powerful.

I tried them before a long time ago and haven't had them recently, so I was really anticipating having them again. The ordering process was quick and easy, we used their computer screens to put our orders in. Not too bad of a wait for our food. The staff were very communicative on our food status while we were waiting, which I appreciated. My order included an Afro pie (7.5/10), I absolutely loved the sauce it came with, but I do feel like the meat inside and pie itself was dry. Sautéed green beans (10/10). Chicken Egusi soup w/ pounded yam (9/10), the flavors were amazing! I loved how savory it was; however, I do believe they switched the spice level of my soup with my sisters because I asked for none-little spice, yet my soup tasted like it was their highest spice level !! I had to keep taking breaks while eating because while it did taste really good, it was also so so spicy! I really did enjoy my meal, despite receiving the wrong spice level in my Egusi soup. I will def return again soon. My overall rate of experience : 8.6/10
