Stop by here yesterday and they delivered from service down to the food. Walking in you have Both regular seating and bar seating. The vibe you have your one love kind of music playing and some other know island music playing to enjoy the atmosphere it was very vibrant and chill with a lot of space to enjoy food and drinks and sit down. The service was smooth and pleasant and quick with us getting our order. We both got the small jerk chicken special where it comes with two sides 13.99 x2 plus taxes. With our two sides we got Mac and cheese which is up charge , and the other sides are no up charge all sides were good and didn't miss in the flavor department and jerk chicken was delicious and had that nice spice to it with the chicken be dark meat and falling off the bone you know it was made with perfection I was very impressed and would definitely recommend this place if your looking for some good Jamaican food. read more

The oxtail was pricey, but well worth it!! So tender and fall-off-the-bone moist, not to mention the sweet potato was soft as puddin' and tasted superb with the brown sugar butter side. Island jerk hut has always been my spot, haven't been since they were in that small shack pre-Covid. The prices have definitely gone up but that's everywhere so it's the norm. The taste is just as good and the portions aren't bad. If you go during the lunch hour expect to wait 15-25mins. Service was good. read more

Did not disappoint!! I really want to give them 4.5 stars as that's what they deserve. I was worried because we were ordering late at night, about 30 mins before they closed. However, they were pleasant on the phone and meals were delicious! We ordered two large oxtails, plantains with rice and peas as our sides. Only complaint is that there wasn't enough rice for my husband and I. I usually don't finish my rice but I did and wanted more so I understood immediately when hubby said he wasn't full. The other portions were EXCELLENT! Nice sized pieces of oxtails and plenty plantains! As an African, I'm always irritated with the plantain portions as they are not expensive but this place showed out and I loved it! We ordered takeout, so I can't speak on the ambiance beyond the friendly service. But I expect it to be nice also given our to-go experience. We'll definitely be back! read more

I found this place searching for Jamaican food. It had mostly good reviews, so I gave it a try. It's setup like a fast food takeout. We ordered oxtail, which comes with 2 sides. Oxtails no matter where you get them I think are overpriced. You order at the counter, and they give you a number. The food comes bagged for takeout. I went once at their old location and it was too far for me to go back so I was ecstatic to learn that they opened a new location- which is a breath of fresh air compared to the literal hut they once had. The new restaurant is brighter and bigger and yes they have indoor seating! (The old place had a picnic tables outside). I went during lunch and was welcome with a warm friendly greeting. I'm not a fan of jerk chicken but theirs is the only place I would get it from. Not only did I order the jerk chicken to share but I also decided to get another Caribbean favorite of mine which is the brown stew chicken. I ordered the small size and it still comes with 2 sides just as the large does. The small is a really nice portion. The prices here are much more reasonable than some of the other Caribbean spots in the area. And IMO, tastes a whole lot better too! I had Island Jerk Hut for the first time. I had a craving and MP's is always packed, so i found this place on yelp and stopped by. I walked in and it was several people waiting on orders. So they seem to be pretty busy. I just knew the food was gonna be on point!! So i went to order with the young girl at the counter. She wasn't friendly at all. She had a nice nasty kinda approach and kinda rushed me by continuing to say "will that be all"? Thats a pet peeve of mine, when I'm done i will say that'll be all... Lol. Dang.. But maybe she was having a bad day.. Her and the cook were having words because he was hot and wanted to leave, so maybe he was aggitating her. But seriously do that in the back somewhere boo... Anyways it was a few things they were out of. So i ordered the jerk pork with mac n cheese and cabbage and a beef patty... Several people were talking about those beef patties, but there was only one left... I was told about 15 mins. So i left and came back 25 mins later and my little box of food had been forgotten. They said they were still waiting on something. So i asked how long and kinda got brushed off. It was very busy but kindness and professionalism goes a long way. So i continued to wait. The side orders are out in front where you pick up your food and i ain't gonna lie it didn't look appealing at all. If they aren't gonna keep it looking clean it should probably be in the back. But thats just my opinion. The food is a little pricey, and they charge extra if you get mac n cheese. So i finally got my food and left. The pork was a little spicy but didn't have much actual flavor and it was alot of fat. More fat than meat. The mac was ultra dry. There was cheese on top but none hardly in the middle. So i was just eating noodles it felt like. The cabbage was alright. The beef patties was my favorite thing. It was mild with good flavor and flaky crust... The plantains were ok as well but you don't get alot. Maybe it was an off day for them. So I'll give them another chance. But i wouldn't go out my way to eat here again. 3 stars. read more

I travel to the Hampton Roads area every few months for business and whenever I land in Norfolk my next stop is Island Jerk Hut. My go to is the Jerk Chicken, rice and peas and cabbage. My wife gets the oxtail. Everything on the menu is outstanding. The service is excellent. The ambiance makes you feel like you're eating at a family members house not a restaurant. The restaurant itself is nice and warming, could definitely see myself sitting down and eating with the clear window views and natural sunlight. The food, well the best thing I can say about it was the jerk chicken was definitely spicy. I definitely couldn't tell what part of the chicken this was even though it was classified as dark. The mac and cheese was lack luster, nothing amazing but not the worst I've had. The cabbage was just terrible. Big pieces of carrots mixed in and it was tasteless. Finally got around to visiting their new location, and happy to report it is still amazing. Their old spot in South Norfolk was a dumpy, tiny building that looked like it could actually be in Kingston, and the food oozed that authenticity. The new location is spacious, bright, and clean by they are still serving the most authentic and flavorful Jamaican food in the 757. I've been looking for a good Jamaican restaurant so I thought I'd give it a try. I've apparently passed this one plenty of time and just didn't know it was there. It is off to the side with plenty of parking which was nice. I was greeted upon entering which is too tier for me the associate was pleasant and answered any question a I had as a first time guest. I ordered the jerk chicken dark, rice and peas with cabbage. It was super tasty the cabbage was bland and not as hot in temperature as I would like but everything else was extremely good I'd just order a different side the next time I came. They had bottled beverages and of course I pared my meal with a pineapple soda! They had the vibes with the music going and just an over fresh feel. The associate mentioned they have happy hour and good rum punch so I'll be back! This restaurant has a full bar and drink menu with some things I'd love to come back and try. read more

This is my favorite Jamaican spot. The food is savory, fresh, and filling. I have tried almost everything on the menu and have not been disappointed. Their escovitch is very good, I love their curry (goat and chicken); they have the best jerk chicken. My favorite sides are rice and peas and cabbage. My husband enjoys the yellow rice. The only downside is that they do get busy and there can be a long wait...and they are closed on Mondays. I could eat here everyday. The staff are also friendly and welcoming. read more

Welcome back, Island Jerk Hut. After closing their tiny location in SoNo due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020, Island Jerk Hut has reopened bigger and better at a new location. You can find them in Indian River Shopping Center in Chesapeake. The shopping center is pretty rundown with a lot of vacant spaces but Island Jerk Hut has put a lot of time and effort into creating an attractive and functional space. Access in and out of the shopping center is easy and convenient with multiple access points from Indian River Road, Sparrow Road and MacDonald Road. Island Jerk Hut is located at the east end of the shopping center near the MacDonald Road entrance. The huge parking lot shared with the other businesses in the center could definitely use some maintenance but is serviceable and assures there will never be an issue finding a spot to park your vehicle even if you are driving a semi-trailer truck. The restaurant did a soft opening on June 11 with an official grand opening on June 18. The grand opening was complete with a ribbon cutting by Chesapeake Mayor Rick West and some city council members. Island Jerk Hut is off to a great start. Hours are noon to 8 PM Monday through Thursday, noon to 9 PM Friday and Saturday. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. Though their business hours are a little limited they stay busy. There seems to always be cars in the parking lot and customers in the restaurant. They are still staffing up and at this time are unable to take phone orders, there is also no online ordering available. You just need to come on by and wait in line. I promise you, the wait is worth it. The menu is authentic Jamaican food. Meals at the old location were really delicious and what they are producing at the new site is truly fabulous as well. So far I've tried the jerk chicken, jerk pork and jerk ribs. One of my friends tried the brown stew chicken and said it was amazing. Mere words cannot adequately describe how special and delicious the food is at Jerk Hut. The sides are also really delicious. I've had the steamed cabbage, mac & cheese and rice & peas. They are all delicious. I rate the food a solid five stars. It is hands down the best Jamaican food I have ever experienced anywhere. The staff is friendly and efficient, they really make you feel like a valued customer. I know Island Jerk Hut will have a long and successful run in their new location. I look forward to working my way through the rest of their menu items. read more

This was my first and only time. I will not return. The jerk sauce is hot/sweet and just horrible. The cabbage was 2 minutes from being mushy. The yellow rice was overcooked as well. The woman cashier was pleasant & polite. The woman that served my to-go order was curt at best. She pointed me in the direction to pay .75 cents for a additional jerk sauce. The cashier gave it to me free. Thank GOD as it was absolutely horrible. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. I literally threw the entire meal in the trash. read more
