I don't think many other folks here understand how valuable an indoor 25-100m public range is. The staff are friendly, the safety class is efficient, and the range is well-lit and well-built. They have a finicky website you need to use to make a reservation, but it's not too hard to figure out. The range is also not fully heated or cooled, so you need to dress accordingly. I go here on very regular basis (typically 2+ times a month), and I've never had a bad experience, other than when another patron insists on being helpful by cleaning up casings around their bench when the range is cold. Here's the thing y'all -- and I say this after reading a couple of the other reviews: It's F-R-E-E free. Free.99. No charge, ever. Don't like the hours? Go somewhere else. Don't like the staff? Go somewhere else, although I doubt it's them that's the problem. Don't like the facility? Go somewhere else. Don't like all the steps you have to take to get a lane? Well, maybe if you'd actually read the instructions on their website you might've gone somewhere else -- but now that you know, go somewhere else. Don't like walking down range to hang your target? Go somewhere else. This is a good facility, well staffed with quality people, at a great price. Did I mention it's free?!? Not to mention there's nowhere else anywhere nearby with 100M indoor rifle lanes. Some people really f***ing baffle me. This range is free to use; that gets high marks from me as it saves me 50 too 100 dollars, but there are trade offs. You have to bring all your own firearms, targets, ammo, and safety gear. There are no rentals or store on site. The ranges are manual - you have to walk down and attach your target to the stand when the range goes cold, which is about every 20 minutes or so. First of all I will say that I am new to the sport, or art of self-defense, whatever you choose to call it. As someone that has never fired one before I figured the best thing to do before I injure myself is take a class on the subject, especially if I decide to later get my concealed. I searched around for other places that teach beginner classes, but I really didn't want to shell out $100 for a beginner class, $25 for each practice session, and $200 for a concealed class. Then I found this place online. I was like, WOW!!!. They have a FREE basic beginner safety class which will save me money. Then I noticed that they they have FREE range. That means if I go with a friend, and it is $25 each at other ranges, it saves $50 an hour. So two hours at the range day can save $100 if you were going to go with a friend. For the cons, it is in Apex, so that is 25 minutes or so from my house, and I literally pass by at least 3 closer ranges, with one of them across the street from my house. They don't have a fancy, or up-to-date HVAC, so when it is cold outside, make sure you take a sweater for INSIDE. When it is hot AF outside, be prepared for it to be warm inside. They also don't have an automatic target stand. You have to wait for a cold range to walk down range and hang your targets. They only do a couple of switches per hour, so that is food for thought. They also don't have any ammo, or targets for you. You have to bring your own with you. Nor do they have any retail supplies. They are only open to the public 4 days a week. This is because M-F during the day they are a range for the law enforcement to use. If you want to save money for buying more ammo, come here. If you have tons of money and you don't know what to do with it, give me some, then go here. #497 read more

Very professional and experienced staff. The RSO, Shawn, helped me tremendously with my aim and form when firing a pistol.

Always have had a great experience here. The RSOs are really wonderful and I always feel safe. I've been by myself or with others and always enjoyed my time. It never bothered me that it's not climate controlled but it looks like they are temporarily closed July through August for annual cleaning and adding an HVAC so that will be different! One time a group was there laughing and joking and someone was waving a gun, just not paying attention to their surroundings or had never been to a gun range before, and they shut that down immediately! They stopped it and then talked to them about gun safety (I'm sure AGAIN) and the group calmed down. I was really glad they handled it the way they did. I've been to other ranges where it seemed like no one was handling situations effectively. Glad this is available to locals! Very happy with their services. read more

I've been to several shooting ranges back in California, but this is my first one here in North Carolina. Yesterday was my first and last time here. Before you are allowed to use this range, you must take a one time 2 hour orientation course. This part I thought was great, as I believe all ranges should do something similar. They cover basic safety rules and procedures. However, using the range was entirely different. The cashier/front desk attendant had a real attitude problem. He will make you feel like an idiot if someone else is trying to do something while you're at the counter. He also has little knowledge about what targets you should select for your type of shooting. Honestly, I wanted to go home just after dealing with him. The RSO's (range safety officers) were just as impolite and impatient. They had little people skills and respond to basic inquiries like you're an idiot. Although I am fairly versed with firearms, I feel that others who are new to the hobby may be turned off from it if this was their first encounter with RSO's. Newbies need instructors that are patient and attentive, not demeaning and impatient. The lighting was another issue. It is very poor and you may have problems trying to uncase your gun or load your magazines. The hours are very askew. They are closed Monday and Wednesday, and on the days they are open, the hours are weird. On business days, they are only open for about 3 hours in the evening. On weekends, they're open a little longer (about 6 hours). If I had anything positive to say about this place, it would be that it is very clean and does have a professional atmosphere (though not a welcoming one). read more

I never shot a gun in my life. I was petrified and almost dreading coming to the basic firearms class, but because of Barry, John, and Ed, I feel confident in handling basic hand guns and I had FUN! Best range around with some minor drawbacks. To shoot here, if you live in Wake County or ANY county that touches Wake, you must take the 2 hour safety course and pass a test. Cost, $15. But in reality $5 since you get 5 $2 off coupons for range time, which is $10 an hour. You can not rent firearms as you can with some other ranges. You can however purchase all your standard caliber ammunitions. A variety of paper target styles. And you can rent a variety of equipment from pistol and rifle rests, to spotting scopes, and that thing which I can't pronounce or spell that measures muzzle velocity. Thats a useful tool for hand loaders. The pluses are you have the ability to shoot both rifle and pistol indoors, and most often you can switch between them in your lane. Can even go all the way out to 100 Meters. That just doesn't exist at an indoor range anywhere else. You are also pretty much free to fire any caliber weapon you like up to .50 cal. Again, you are not going to find that at any other indoor range. The one thing you most certainly can NOT shoot is a shotgun unless you are firing slugs. Must be slugs. Class III items are allowed as long as you have your paperwork with you. Want to use your suppressor, go on over to your lane and be as quiet as you want. Want to bring your fully automatic? Go ahead, BUT, you can only fire it in semi mode. You can't fire it on full auto. Minor children are allowed with parent. You will have to sign a release. Big whoop. I bring mine about 50% of the time The downsides are fairly minor. The lighting was improved, but could still be better. There is almost always a wait. Sometimes very short. Sometimes 30 minutes plus. And unlike what most people envision a shooting range to be, they do not have those "send out and retrieve" systems where you clip your target on it, hit a button and send it out, then hit a button and bring it back to you. You will have to wait until the range is cold to go out and set up your target on manually moved target holders. Then fire away when the range goes hot. Then wait / continue firing until the range once again goes cold to go out and change your target. Not really that big of a deal, but it can get annoying some times when you get your lane and the range just went hot and now you have to wait 20 minutes to set your first target. The other downside for some, not for me, but for some people is the aspect of pretty much any weapon being allowed. Its not uncommon to get a lane next to a guy who just got a shiny new AK pistol with a break on it and by golly, he's gonna unload that 30 round clip in 10 seconds. So now you have a fire breathing cannon next to you and the concussive force can be pretty distracting. The ROs are pretty good about not putting you next to such if you don't want to be. Such doesn't bother me, but when I have my 9 and 6 year old with me and they just want to enjoy their Mossberg 22s and Sig 22s, I really don't want that next to us. Its a quality facility with quality employees and 99% of the shooters follow the rules and are respectful of one another. And for the price, $10 an hour per lane, not person , but per lane, so you and a friend, spouse, kid, etc can share a lane and still only pay $10, it can't be beat. read more

what's to say about a government gun range? It's SAFE. There's no horseplay here. Sometimes, the RSO's could use a sense of humor, but i get it, gun safety requires no laughing. Although it's in door, it's cold in the winter and warm in the summer due to the fresh air forced into the facility. It NEVER smells of gun powder, which to me is a plus. People of all ages come here, i've seen dads bring their sons & daughters to teach them to shoot, husbands & wives as well. It gets loud, so EVERYONE needs their own ear protection. The range officers are always helpful, and answer any/all questions. Been here many times for classes and punching holes. It's worth the class to use the facility. IF you live in Wake county or any county which shares a border with Wake, you are required to sit through the training class on gun safety and range rules. (small price to pay). I've had friends from out of state that were able to come in and shoot NBD as i'm a member. (been through class) We've shot rifles on the 100yd range as well as pistols (as far or close as you want). read more

Before stepping foot on this range, you must take a safety orientation course to familiarize yourself with range rules and firearm safety rules. The perk to sitting through it is a membership that does not expire unless you do something stupid, and a few bucks off your first five visits to the range. It's $15 for Wake County residents and takes approximately two hours. While public use of the range is limited to certain days of the week and times, it is an absolute steal if you can get in there. Plus, there are tons of courses that you can take which will help you be a better shooter. Today, my fiancé and I took two rifles and two pistols to the range and were able to get two lanes next to each other, as well as some targets, for $9 each. The range wasn't really all that packed, but it was snowing so people might not have wanted to leave their homes. We were able to shoot for an hour, burning through a few hundred rounds each, and since we were on a range that allowed for pistol and rifle fire, use both types of guns indoors. Most RSOs were pretty awesome, but there was one female RSO that needs to work on her communication skills. Aside from her, the staff is top notch. read more

I would have to say that I've met several of the range safety officer's and they are all very helpful and professional.Just recently Bill gave my son some hands-on training to make him a safer shooter and I was very appreciative of the kindness of the entire staff when we went. If you follow the rules and have a safe mindset and a positive attitude this is the best deal around! I absolutely love going there and spending an hour or two brushing up on my skills and teaching my son respect for firearms and other people. There is 100 meter range for siting in, and if you forget your or eye protection, targets or ammunition, or you need to rent a spotting scope they are very affordable and read that equipment or sell you those items at a reasonable price. The facility is nice however the RSO's are too eager to act like drill instructors, most of them are the type who think there is "a communist in the white house" as i heard one of them say. Ran by the kind of folks who think they are born with gun knowledge and safety While i admit they must often yell to catch your attention because everyone is wearing ear protection, being cursed at should not be part of the process. I was packing up my rifle, unloaded, made the mistake of point my gun case toward the wall instead of down range and was literally yelled at in a very condescending tone. Great shooting range with some drawbacks. Low light is one and could be easily corrected. Have to walk to change targets which isn't a big deal but the 100 yard is a pain in the butt. The female RSO is rude and will yell in your face if you make a mistake. Our first time out we walked the gun to the firing line after it was made safe but didn't have it in the holster, while I understand the mistake was my fault she yelled at me like a drill Sargent and embarrassed me in front of other gunners in a very disrespectful way. This should be done in a better way. We are new to the range and try to do everything in a safe manner but all ranges have different rules. After all we do pay their salaries and our taxes built this place. read more

Started to give it only one star, but decided on two because at least it's another gun range to go to. Horrible lighting (can't see my sights clearly). Horrible climate control (I went in summer and sweated like crazy). Horrible ventilation (gun powder just hangs in the air). Horrible noise control (cement floors and brick walls make for a LOUD experience). But the thing that annoyed me the most was no motorized target holders. Here we have a huge, tax payer funded range and we're still in the stone age of having to take all the lanes to "cold", and walk your targets out, which also means you have to wait on others before you can switch targets, etc. While I've heard many negatives about the range officers attitudes, luckily I didn't experience any bad ones during my visit. Better lighting and motorized target holders would go a LONG way in making this a better range. read more

Best range around here for sure. You do have to take a 2 hour safety course before even shooting here but for only $15 to start and the discount coupons they give to you for the first 5 range trips, you cant beat it. Also I believe the information given is great for any beginner shooters and is essential. $10 per lane per hour is unheard of around here, as PDHSC in Raleigh charges $25 per person! Anyway, this range is great, but there are some odd differences between a normal range and this one. First, there are no target retrieval systems, the range switches between cold and hot every 20 minutes or so, allowing you to go out onto the range and setup your own target on standing cardboard figures, feels odd at first but it works. Second, the lightning is okay, before the renovation it was horrible, the lightning is better now, but when I am shooting, sometimes I can't even see my rear sights because of the lightning configuration. Lastly, a few of the range officers are complete jerks, most of them are great and actually help out people with tips on shooting, as there are a lot of beginners, something a range officer isn't even required to do. However there are a few ROs that are pure d-bags, yelling at people, making people feel less than, and just micro managing everyone. I understand safety is key in such an environment but they can be a little nicer, especially to new shooters. This is not all the time though, as most of the time the nice range officers are there. Bottom line is, with 40 different lanes for pistol AND rifle shooting, cheap hourly cost, and mostly great range officers, it definitely beats anywhere else. read more
