DO NOT trust this doctor! I went for a yearly full body scan and she took a few biopsies. Her office called me a few weeks later saying I needed to have the spots removed as they were active cancer. I received the bill in the mail and they never submitted to my insurance company. After receiving the bill, I checked the reviews for the office and saw how many people have issues with billing. I had a bad feeling about the test results so I asked if I could come pick up a copy of the test results showing my biopsies were active cancer. I scheduled an appointment with another dermatologist and showed them the report. They said I do not need to remove those spots as they are NOT active skin cancer. They also said they hear a lot of stories like mine from this office. I am also still dealing with billing issues 6 months later! I would not recommend this office! read more

Wake Forest Dermatology I was a patient with Dr. Patricia Mathies since 2023 and 2024. She diagnosed me with cancer on my right temple and did 2 extractions and sent them to her pathology lab. They did not diagnose correctly and after spending $1,000 out of pocket expense, I felt that she misdiagnosed and the wound never got better after several months. I finally decided to go to a local dermatologist in my area and, much to my surprise, the cancer was still there. I now have to have a Mohs surgery to dig out what this incompetent dermatologist was not able to diagnose correctly. ** I would never recommend this dermatologist and her practice to anyone ever again. If you ever decide to use her services, then you are crazy. She is an incompetent doctor and her practice is all about the "money" and not about your Well being. read more

Well, I am no longer going to this dermatology office. Their labs are done by GPA (Greensboro Pathology Associates). GPA was hacked/information compromised. They did not bill me for 3/2024 until late May 2025 and after many phone calls!! They are horrible. I have asked for my May 2024 invoice and statement and never received one. I will never go anywhere that does labs through GPA. I put in a complaint to the BBB. Beware and read the reviews! They messed up someone's credit that never received invoices. So unethical. It is disappointing as I complained to the office staff at Wake Dermatology. It is crazy that a company can take over a year to invoice you. Sad situation for consumers and healthcare. read more

Updated my review as of December 2019: My husband, myself and my daughter have all been patients of Dr Matheis...my daughter was prescribed two prescriptions by Dr Matheis. Both medications were about to run out and had zero refills. So far, I've left THREE voicemails requesting refills. No calls back and no medication refills called in. Also, I've called Wake Forest Dermatology EIGHT times today alone... the phones go unanswered and go straight to a useless voicemail hole of despair. I'm pissed. My daughter is out of her meds, the office doesn't even answer the phones (what?!), and I get no calls back. After reading recent reviews elsewhere, I see I'm not alone. I'm really aggravated, disappointed and shocked that a dr would handle her business this way! I cannot recommend this Dr or her office any longer. I've since called another local dermatologist and explained my situation - the receptionist knew right away who I was talking about! She said, "Oh, I know, we can't get through, either, and can't get patients records transferred." What the heck?! This practice has a multitude of things wrong with it. I have waited for over 60 minutes to be seen at this office for a less than 10 minute mole check appointment. Additionally, they did not notify me they were running behind at check-in. Numerous people were frustrated in the waiting room for this. After my appointment, I was billed via my insurance within a month or so. All standard procedure. I was willing to forgive the long wait because everything else had gone fine. Fast forward nearly 1 YEAR later... they are billing my insurance yet again for the exact same date, procedure, and cost. They sent me a letter stating I owed them money. An open letter to Patricia Matheis, MD People come to you when they are scared. I did. After four successful cancer surgeries I had a suspected growth on my arm. You took biopsies of three areas that concerned you. At that point you questioned if two of the areas (that had been surgically treated before) could be recurrent cancer only because of the way they were healing. I had told you that I keloid scar, this information would factor heavily into any treatment going forward. You called a week later and told me that all three biopsies were pre-cancer. I asked what cells were found, and you said you had just called the lab and that's what you were told. At that time, you suggested treatments for pre-cancer. Immediately I sent an email asking for a copy of the pathology report. None was forthcoming. Statistically, MOHS surgery, which I had for all of my cancer surgeries has less than ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT recurrence rate in five years. I was confident that the pathology report was wrong. At my next visit, I insisted that I be given a copy of the pathology report before seeing you. Review of the report revealed none of the biopsies to be pre-cancer. As suspected, two of the biopsies were indeed scar tissue. As stated to your assistant, I believe the third biopsy to be diagnosed incorrectly also. Your assistant seemed shocked when I handed him the pathology report. When he walked in, he wanted to discuss treatments for my pre-cancerous condition. He left the room immediately to review the report with you, You didn't know the results of the report because you never read it and you never read the report because you never got it. What you did was not only sloppy and inexcusable it is the profoundly bad practice of the medical art of healing and borders on negligent abuse. There are no words or deeds that you can express or do to make up for this error, NONE! I can not in any way recommend you or your office as competent dermatologists. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Matheis for abouut 15 yrs. since she first moved into her building in WF. I was very happy with her for the first few years as far as the way her office was run and the way I was treated. If a biopsy was done, SHE would call me with the results, sometimes at 7:00pm! I had a black spot of some kind on my shoulder and asked her to check it out. She said it was nothing. It was "OKAY". Almost every time I went in to see her, I'd ask her to check it out. The answer was always the same. This last time I went in last month for a complete body check I mentioned it again only this time I said everyone was asking me about it. THEN she said ok then, she'd biopsy it. When I got the results, the girl at the desk called me to tell me the results. NOT the doctor! It came back melanoma and I was terrified. I lost a brother to melanoma. I also had a problem with trying to get in touch with her office. No one answered the phone. I actually drove to the office to see if she'd moved!! I was also told by an employee once that they work through lunch. NO LUNCH??? I thought that was illegal. Just to take in more patients I guess. I am so disenchanted by Dr. Matheis. After she removes my two malignant spots, I will never go back. I wish someone could recommend a good practice to call. read more

Worst dermatology place in the triangle. I hate to say this because I have been going to this place since I was a teenager but not by choice. They NEVER answer their phone, if you are lucky it takes call several times calling to get someone to pick up just to be placed on hold and they do not answer your voicemails in a timely manner. My prescriptions have been called in incorrectly MULTIPLE times. They called in OLD prescriptions from pervious visits and when I finally got in touch with them they said NONE of the medicines Dr. Mathesis wrote on the piece of paper for me were even on my chart so explain that one..... They have staff that have no idea what they are doing nor do they care. You will wait in the waiting room for over an hour but only spend 10 minutes in the room because she rushes you out. These things are annoying, but much worse is the poor care provided by Dr. Matheis. She calls for unnecessary treatments and appears to be only trying to increase her income. After being told that I just needed to pay the co-pay amount, I received a bill with late charges in the mail. When I called to question this, I was told that they had not yet billed my insurer. I have been into this office four times now. Not once have I waited less than 30 minutes PAST my appointment time after arriving 15+ minutes early. On top of this, I was told over the phone that I had "malignant melanoma" when I did not. For over two months, I thought I had cancer WHEN I DID NOT. I shed a whole lot of wasted tears. Definitely Shady billing practices going on with her. I had two small moles that needed to be removed. She told me I could only do 1 at a time because my insurance will not pay for two procedures in 1 visit. Totally absurd. I've been to numerous other practices and this has never been an issue. So I had the one removed. Had to wait 2 weeks until I could get the second removed. Meanwhile, I called my insurance company. They specifically said that is NOT true. Basically this Dr. is padding her wallet by billing for 2 office visits and whatever duplicate charges she does. I told her on my second visit what my insurance co (BCBS) said. Her response was, "well some other insurance co's won't authorize ". So instead of knowing or looking into a patient's authorization from their specific insurance co., she just has a blanket policy across the board to only do one procedure per visit. BEWARE - $$$$ out of pocket! I went in for a simple skin rash - a bit of psoriasis on my shoulders. I was seen for about 15 min. first by an intern, then Dr. Mathais then another intern. Without any discussion of options, she prescribed 3 medications for me, including a steroid and an antibiotic for a month. I used insurance but still had to pay almost $300 out of pocket. I just got a bill for another $107 and it states that I might get ANOTHER bill. Total for this 15 min basic visit - $732. BEWARE!! (By the way, No way was I going on those meds for a month. My first experience with Dr. Matheis was disappointing. I have seen other dermatologists in RDU but I had seen good reviews for this practice and thought I would give it a try. The office staff was so kind and welcoming and did a wonderful job. However, on my way out from my appointment I witnessed the Dr. being condescending and abruptly rude to her employees. The doctor kept talking all during my examination and wouldn't shut up. I came in for a full body scan, not a lesson in Dermatology. She prescribed skin cream that was ineffective, so I asked for another medication. My son worked here part time for a few days. It only took a few days for them to 'hire someone full time'. No one bothered to tell him, he brought all of his signed 'working papers' in (he was so excited to do this, he's 17 and this was his first job (filing). He was screened and recommended by a program at Wakefied High, so they had never seen him before the interview, where they took him around and started him working. He's an honor student and super industrious so we are just assuming the reason he was let go so abruptly and so hurt fully. Kids have to learn how the world works, especially the children who are poc. Very sad. read more

Made an appointment for first available which was 2 months out. I get there, and the girl asks for my insurance card, only to inform me that they don't take my particular version of BCBS (I have BCBS Home). Hi there folks... I had a great experience with the Wake Forest Dermatology team a few months ago. I was scheduled for an appointment and I was called back approx. 5 minutes after I arrived. Dr. Matheis spent approx. 20 minutes with me discussing my condition and placing skin samples under the microscope as I waited in the room. She also pressured my insurance company to provide the expensive medication I needed to clear up my skin. Having a Dr that is kind, prompt, knowledgeable, and fights FOR you is just what I wanted. This is not my first visit with Wake Forest Dermotology, however it has been several years since my last visit. I think the office manager must have heard your reviews, because everyone I delt with was awesome! The nurse even found me some glasses to use with the bright lights since I had just come from the eye doctor and my eyes were dialated. Such great service. I am only giving them one star because zero stars is not an option. Over a week ago, I requested an appointment online and filled out all the online paperwork. I was referred by a friend and had heard good things. The next day, I called and left a message requesting an appointment and mentioned the urgency of why I needed an appointment, and expressed my thankfulness in any help they could give me. I never got a call back, never got an email confirmation, nothing. I had to visit urgent care in the meantime. Have since made an appointment at a different dermatologist. I have been a patient of Dr. Matheis for years. She is very good at finding even small potentially cancerous spots. That being said, 2 years ago at my yearly check up, I requested, when I made the appointment, to not just have any spots scraped for biopsy, but to please go ahead and cut out whatever might be needed to get clean margins, because my mother had a stroke and I didn't know when I'd be back in NC. During the appointment, she only did scrapes, told her my request, she said she didn't have time for the other and knew nothing about it. That was frustrating. (Background- mine have always been some type of cell that always needed further removal) I went online this year to see if I could find another dermatologist, but was having difficulty due to COVID, so I looked up WF online to get the phone number and saw all the bad reviews. I thought, OK, just know you'll have to wait and let's just make the same request to only come in once, b/c again, I'm helping my mother- dementia and a back surgery in March of 2020, and will just "pop" down to NC to do this b/c I know I'll have spots. I asked her to remove "big chunks" and get clean margins. She didn't say no, so I figured all was good. She left the room, the assistant gave me the directions for cleaning the areas, etc. I looked down at my legs and noticed only band aids and no stitches. . . when I asked, she said that Dr. M only took samples. Sigh. Results came back as needing to have removal, but guess what. . . I'm in VA taking care of my mother and don't know when I'll get back to NC. I won't be going back. If I can't trust them to do what's best for me as the patient, then I can't keep going to them. read more

WARNING... Find A Different Dermatologist! HORRIBLE!!! After a six week wait for my appointment I went to their office. My appointment was a 2:30 and I arrived at 2:15. At 2:25 the lady at the front desk approached me to inform me that Dr. Matheis had a meeting get moved to my 2:30 appointment time so she could not see me and they had to cancel my appointment. I tried calling this office many times after being referred by my primary care physician saying they took my insurance. No one ever answered the phone, so I finally stopped in and asked them if they took my insurance, which they said they did, inmate an appointment! Well my appointment was supposed to be yesterday at 10:45 AM. I got there and gave them my insurance card and now they are telling me that I would owe some, that my insurance would not cover my entire visit but they were not sure exactly what was covered. Most doctor offices know what their patients insurance covers or they can at least call and find out. So they finally called and now they're telling me I was going to owe a good portion of it that my insurance did not cover the entire thing. They have no clue what they were doing as when I first made my appointment I was told by insurance was excepted and I would've nothing. They also do not know how to answer a telephone. This is not the place to visit! My entire cheek and surrounding face were removed due to Dr. Matheis's "oversight". I was a patient for four years and during my numerous visits I repeatedly asked about a growth in my cheek as it grew larger. Each time I was told it was scar tissue from her previous biopsies or a cyst. Fortunately my primary doctor arranged for surgery at a Mohs center before I also lost my nose and eye. I have been undergoing painful facial reconstructive surgery for the past year but my face will never be normal or without pain. read more

I am on the the fence with Dr M. I had my first appointment last week. It took me 2 weeks to get an appointment. The waiting room was full. I was taken back near my appointment time. I waited a while longer in the room. She rushed in and introduced herself. She quickly glanced at my rash and said 'oh, you have psoriasis.' She then went into a rapid fire list of supplements and creams that I needed to take (over $80 worth) and then she added 2 medications-- methotrexate and Tazorac cream. She explained that I would take 1 methotrexate pill and have a blood test done a week later to see if I would benefit from taking it. She failed to mention the horrible list of possible side effects. She neither asked about my medical history or the medications I am taking. After reading about methotrexate, I am quite leary of taking it. What is your opinion of Dr M? She was referred by a neighbor when found her very thorough. Oh, and then they overlooked calling in my prescriptions. Was this just a bad day? read more
