This is the place my husband asks to go for his birthday every year. Something has changed though... better quality ingredients ? Better Chef ? because the night we came on a Thursday the place was packed and the food was fantastic ! I love their wheat beer. The beef stew we started off with was phenomenal ! Great food, wide choice of German food, beer & wines, pure real German gasthaus design, as Germans would say "echt". Owners freely roam the central room often, the serving staff are friendly,warm, and everywhere. Excellent time had by all. Our visits have been so good I had to join their beer club. Additionally, this is the first time in my 84 years seeking real German taste in a German styled American restaurant that I found it. This is the real deal! read more

Overall, this place was a pretty fun event. We didn't have any issues with parking. They had some food options to eat. I wish they had a little bit more options for everyone. You have to get tickets for food and drink first and then get your items when needed. The music was good and there was dancing. We didn't have issues finding a place to sit or eat but we were also one of the first ones there. The event was fun and entertaining. I'm glad I went. read more

I check out Oktoberfest at the Waldhorn almost every year. Back before work paid my way I would come alone too. It's certainly a stereotype beyond measure here. They've got 3-4 authentic German beers on tap (keeps it real simple). There are the usual food choices and background accordion music through the night. In short my experience here is "meh". I much prefer the Oktoberfest celebrations you can find at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. But at Waldhorn they have the usual - albeit a bit overpriced - libations. Like I said, 3-4 authentic German beers including Spaten and Franziskaner Weissbier. You can't complain about German beers - they stick to the rules all the time and come out tasting just fine. If you want some beer variety, this is not the place for you. The prices aren't bad but characteristically steep. You're better off just getting a pitcher. They fill plastic cups that aren't a full pint by far. For food they've got the pretzels with mustard options but no cheese. These are $2.50. Again, a bit pricey. Lots of plated dishes including bratwurst, schnitzel and hahnchen (chicken quarter). Sides include sauerkraut, red cabbage and spaetzl with gravy. I love the spaetzl and red cabbage but I gotta say both are better at OMB. Sorry! The chicken quarter was excellent however. Meat was "fall-off-the-bone" and seasoned very well. All seating is outside underneath and around a large tent. You have to pay to get in and then buy tickets to exchange for beer. The tables are in huge rows that you share with everybody. The sun gets hot and cuts through some of the outlying tables so you're better off finding a shadier spot until it goes down. The band will play energetic and interactive traditional accordion music through the entire event. If you get buzzed before you get annoyed you'll probably have a good time. As a final note, the festival is not representative of the restaurant which has an extensive menu of authentic, delicious German dishes. read more

Always try to make it out to Walhorn's annual celebration of Oktoberfest! Their celebration usually lasts over 3 weekends in October where they have a tent erected outside the normal restaurant to have food, drinks, and entertainment all under one space! If you eat dinner at the Waldhorn (make a reservation) and you get free entrance to the tent afterwards. You can also just pay $3 general admission and eat the various offerings the tent has along with the beer! Parking can get a little messy, but you can park next door at the James Polk State historic site or behind the Havertys near Carolina place mall and walk over. read more

This event is so much fun! This was my first Oktoberfest experience in Charlotte. It's $3 to get in and then the rest of the expenses are totally up to you. The boyfriend and I had an expensive date with two pitchers and 3 brats, but totally worth it. What a fun night! Oddly, there are a handful of people getting drink, drank, drunk. And then there are a whole bunch of other people that brought their families and little kids. It was an interesting experience, but totally family friendly and festive. There are two different menus for the restaurant and the tent. The tent is run by a ticket system. So you order and pay for food, drinks, etc and the lady gives you tickets. Have been here for a couple of lunches and recently for a dinner. Truly a German restaurant and a nice decor appropriate for a gasthaus. We lived and were married in Germany so are familiar with the dishes and the terminology. The selections were perfect, beer as it should be and service great. However, our server, so well intended and hospitable, did not have a clue as to the German names for the menu offerings, but perhaps it was my pronunciation of those German words. I relented and just did it in English, which greatly pleased her young heart. So after ordering, the food came so fast that we had little time to eat one course before the next arrived. Thankfully we ONLY had our drinks, appetizer, soup and main course spread on the table but not the dessert. Whew, as there was little room for more. BUT...our ever helpful waitress was quick to remove out bread plates and silverware to clear space. We had to ask for the plates and silverware so we could consume our rapidly cooling courses. How very un-German to rush the food. In Germany you can spend all night at your table chatting and eating and until you parallel your silverware or indicate you want attention, the wait staff will leave you alone. Not here. We left happy to have had a decent German meal, but a bit disappointed at how production the service was from a well-intended server who was out of context. Waldhorn is a good place and they put out fequent emails on specials and events. Their beer club is popular and come Oktoberfest it is fantastic. We recognize that this most recent experience is not typical, so don't be put off by this review. read more

This is always a generally awesome event every year and it has grown nearly every year as far as I can tell. With tents and authentic beer and German food being served up you can certainly get the feeling of old world German style celebration. In addition to the food and beer are the bands they have. So much fun! This is certainly a kid friendly event. Couple things to note is the parking and the seating. The parking lot fills up quickly and the rollover lots are a good little walking distance away so be prepared. Also, seating is hard to come by so be patient. If I had one suggestion to make the event better it would be to offer VIP tables and wait staff to cater those tables for a fee. It would really alleviate the whole "oh, I'll just put my towel on the chair at 7:30 because I'll be back in an hour" issue that has become a serious problem. read more

I had so much fun here!!!!! The fact that I have lived in Charlotte on and off since '04' and have never done this is a complete mystery. This was a time of family, friends, fun, singing, dancing, DRINKING, eating.....the list could go on. Being European myself this reminded me of growing up and enjoying the holidays with the family. Entry to the event was cheap and the pricing on food and drink was decent. Be weary though, this is a cash only event. Yes they do take credit cards inside the restaurant to eat and drink inside the restaurant, but the event is separate. I gouged on awesome beer and hot pretzels...YUMMY! Got to dance around to the band, who were just great. Played a bunch of games with the other patrons and the peeps I came with. I am definitely going to do this again next year! read more

Honestly I get wait until Mid-September when this event starts. Ideally I would go at least one weekend day because the bands are different each weekend which gives each one a different feel. You can get a reservation inside for 6 or more but I'm not even sure how far in advance you need to call to get one so we just eat outside in the tents which works for me. The event has a family feel with kids until about 8pm or so and then it gets a little more adult after. Food is great. Beer is great and it is just a boatload of fun. Take an Uber there. read more

Such a fun experience! This has been only my second Octoberfest at Waldhorn, but I've really enjoyed myself each time. Being that my mom is German, half my childhood was spent in Germany, and I speak German as a second language I always try to get my husband to experience some of my German side. That can be a little challenging being that we live in Charlotte, and that my family lives in a completely different country from us. So needless to say I said beer and he said OK. This event is so fun! It can be a little intimidating, but once you're settled with your wristband and tickets it becomes very familiar. When we went last weekend the outside food was amazing!! I only had brats and sauerkraut but man on man it was so delicious. I'm not a big drinker but my husband thoroughly enjoyed his beers. The service was wonderful as well. All the workers, be it the food, beer, or "floaters" were engaging and kind. Which I can always appreciate at such big events. Parking was made easy by the parking attendants, which helped big time. However Lancaster Hwy is shut down coming from the mall, so I'd be aware of that for 2016. One thing I didn't like and that doesn't reflect on the business at all is that people save seats under the tents. I don't think seats should be able to be saved, but if asked I would save a seat for someone. So. There it is. read more

I am from Germany and I don't like to compare the Oktoberfest at the Waldhorn with a beer fest in Germany, cant do this, but one thing you can: You pay 4 dollars entrance, so you are allowed to stand in a super long line to buy Tickets for drinks and food, then you stand in a super line to get food on a paper plate and a beer in a plastic cup (Weizen beer normally 1/2 litter in a plastic cup 0.2 or 0.3 for 6.50??) so you can stand there with your food and beer in your hand and cant even sit down to enjoy. That's what I thought was totally a rip of. What I compare with a German fest is, if its full you close the entrance so no one can get inside anymore, or you put up real beer benches so you get more space for everyone to enjoy a seat in the tent and not behind the tent sitting on the ground in the dirt. That's ridicules. Also give the right amount of beer in a real glass and not in a plastic cup where is smaller then it should be. The attention of a fest like this is good the planning and the management is terrible. We will never go there again its a total rip of. 70 Dollars for one hour having nothing and a drive trough Charlottes traffic of almost 1 hour. NO THANK YOU! read more
