I usually try to let things go, but my experience at this office was so stressful and unacceptable that I feel compelled to share it. I went to this dentist because a filling on one tooth had broken, leaving a hole that needed to be repaired. The filling was approximately 15 years old. I was not aware that I even had a filling on that tooth because this was never explained to me. The dentist repaired the tooth, but I was not given a clear treatment plan or an explanation of exactly what work he was performing. As I understood it afterward, old composite was left in place and new composite was added. Within seven days, the filling failed. I could feel the composite come out with my tongue, and the hole was again present in the same tooth and the same location where I had originally sought treatment. I returned because the tooth needed to be repaired again. I was then charged for another filling on the same tooth. What should have been a straightforward repair ultimately cost me nearly $700. When I told the dentist, "We need to talk," he became defensive and yelled at me, telling me that he had already spent too much time answering my treatment questions. When I asked whether a crown would have been a better option, I was told it would cost approximately $1,800. At that point, I had already paid a substantial amount toward essentially having the same filling done twice. He attempted to explain the situation using an analogy about taking a car to an autobody shop to repair a dent and then developing rust somewhere else on the hood a week later. I found the analogy completely inapplicable. This wasn't a different area of the tooth developing a new problem. It was the same tooth, the same location, and the same hole that I had originally asked him to repair. I was also charged approximately $1,000 for extensive X-rays. I had gone to the office with one tooth that had a broken, 15-year-old filling and a hole requiring treatment. I would have expected the dentist to obtain the necessary records or explain why additional imaging was needed, rather than simply proceeding without a clear explanation of the treatment plan and costs. I am also a cancer patient dealing with significant dental consequences from cancer treatment, including extensive vomiting and acid reflux. I have already lost five molars over the past year and a half and was seeking a practical repair to prevent this particular tooth from becoming infected. I was not looking for unnecessary treatment or an elaborate restoration. I needed the immediate problem addressed and wanted to understand my options. Instead, I left feeling that I had received a bill rather than a treatment plan. The interaction itself was extremely uncomfortable. At one point, while I was struggling to breathe because I have a dry mouth and severe seasonal allergies, he told me to breathe through my nose because I was fogging his mirror. Rather than feeling cared for as a patient, I felt as though I was being treated as an inconvenience. I was also accused of being a nuisance to the office staff. I had called the office once to ask whether I would be charged for repairing a filling that had failed within seven days. I don't consider asking that question unreasonable. I deeply regret not leaving when the dentist's behavior became confrontational, but I needed the hole in my tooth repaired. My concern isn't simply that a filling failed. Dental work can fail, and I understand that. My concern is the combination of: * No clear explanation that I already had a filling in the tooth * No clear treatment plan before the procedure * Old composite apparently being left in place while new composite was added * Failure of the repair within seven days * The same hole reappearing in the same location * Being charged again for treatment of the same tooth * Approximately $1,000 in X-ray charges that were not adequately explained to me * A hostile and defensive response when I questioned the outcome and the billing Patients deserve to understand what is being done to their teeth, what their options are, what the expected costs are, and what happens when a repair fails almost immediately. I would not return to this office, and based on my experience, I would not recommend this dentist to others.
