From the moment we walked through the door we have been nothing but impressed with the coaches, professors, and really everyone at Alliance San Marcos. For the kids, they do an absolutely mind bogglingly amazing job of meeting each child where they are and never holding any one of them to an expectation that is too high for that individual. The skill, knowledge, patience, and sheer situational awareness to be able to do that with a full classroom full of 3-5 year olds doing something as complex as jiu jitsu is astounding. Coach Nick was Sage's first instructor at Alliance and a favorite of mine - his passion and patience are visible in everything he does. Everyone does an incredible job of breaking the skills down in a fun and digestible way for the kids and they are clearly learning and retaining! I ended up joining the fun as well and as a 37 year old out of shape dude I gotta admit I was in my head before my first time on the mat wondering "WTF am I thinking starting something like this at this stage of my life?" This school is filled with wonderful and talented professors who are teaching my kids some very important skills that I find extremely important to their development. Not only does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teach them self defense but it gives them a level of confidence that is extremely empowering (we have already dealt with playground bullying and thank goodness for BJJ and giving my kids confidence to handle the situation as needed). In addition to the obvious it has taught them respect, discipline, hard work and perseverance. You should see the looks on their faces when they earn their stripes and belts and know that they worked hard to where there are and the motivation they have to continue each and every day. What you may not know is that BJJ is also great for the development of their brains. I've spoken with occupational therapists, child psychologists and family therapists and they all unanimously agree that having them in BJJ is one of the best things I can do for my children. I helps the left and right sides of their brains coordinate, communicate and fire new pathways. The movements of crossing the midline, which is so important for things such as hand dominance (writing), fine motor skills, planning and sequencing and body awareness. I actually started BJJ here at Gracie Barra Encinitas 3 years ago (in an attempt to get my middle child to start) and fell in love with it myself. So now it's a family sport and my kids love to roll with me, we get quality time together on the mats during family class and when I volunteer and help coach the kids classes. Nothing like bonding with the children while they are in a choke hold or being arm barred - they LOVE IT!!! Lastly, I do have to say that I have met so many wonderful families here and my kids and I have made numerous friendships. I'm really torn on this place..so 3 stars seems appropriate…read more I've been looking for a place to get back into boxing training and this place seemed to fit the bill- close to my house, relatively good air flow- huge roll up windows, and a wide variety of classes after 5pm which works really well with my schedule. They have a website so I emailed them, but never heard back. Meh, ok...no big deal. I called but the voicemail doesn't match the name of the establishment...but I did receive a voicemail and then a text from someone named Johnny (there are two Johnny's at this place so I'm not sure which one I texted with). We exchanged a few texts and I told him what I was looking for- boxing training/classes and I wanted to check out/watch a class...and he told me to come in on Monday at 5pm or 6pm. So, I went in at 4:50 on Monday...lo and behold....there's no boxing until 6pm, so I have no idea why I was told to come in at 5pm. Anyway...I hung around for a bit, spoke to Johnny (not sure if this was the same person I texted with), and received a class schedule. I was sort of sour on this place after that, but decided to give it a shot. Let me rate the class- the class is good. Coach Johnny (not the person who I spoke to about membership) ran the class and it was a solid boxing technique class. Having been in the fitness industry for years prior to covid, there were a few things concerning to me...like no cool down or stretching after class and no safety cues during the class...but I don't think most people would notice it. Newcomers are separated from the main class but once Coach Oliver saw I had experience, he told me to join the class. Membership is 125/m which is on par with other speciality training centers. I ultimately decided not to join for several reasons- while their paperwork to join was pretty standard like release of liability, 30 days notice to cancel....all standard....there was no option to 'pause' your membership for a medical reason. Also, the area surrounding the club gets sketchy at night. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking to my car after class alone after the time change. My search continues.....
