I was then advised to "just call around to see if someone else will fill it, because they aren't going to." I'm a strong believer in supporting local businesses. My husband, family and friends all use Mabank Family Pharmacy. (Though, as of today, my husband will no longer) This decision was made not by them simply denying my prescription, but by the way it was handled and how they went about it. Instead of further discussing this concern, and maybe as a courtesy filling my prescription this one time and letting me know that moving forward they won't be able to, due to the cost, they instead denied my medication that I critically need without any disregard to my health. I find it ironic, that on their website it states "We go above and beyond to make sure our community is taken care of the same way we would treat our own family." It's hard to believe that they would in fact treat their own family members this way.

Recently, we have had to move my mother's, my wife's and my own prescriptions to other pharmacies. I spoke to the owner yesterday to express my dissatisfaction. Some of his comments, "we aren't a charity, we are for profit," 'we don't price match on controlled substances because because there is a high problem across the county with drug abuse," and "higher quality costs more." Regarding his comment about controlled substances, this is a large part of why people turn to illegal drugs. I've had a family member (in another state) who had an injury and was put on Percocet. When she couldn't afford the high cost, she turned to crack. Regarding the cost vs quality comment, we have had multiple prescriptions which we were told were ready, only to go pick up a small portion (3 of 90) and then have to return another day. Having to make two trips for the same rx doesn't feel like quality service to me. They also refuse to take GoodRX because while we, the customer gets to pay less, he said the pharmacy actually gets a bill for additional costs ($5). Their Facebook page says "While others choose conglomerates, we believe in the power of local. Because you're not just a customer to us, you're our neighbor, our friend, and part of our pharmacy family. At Mabank Family Pharmacy, we pride ourselves on our unrivaled customer service and understanding your unique needs. We've been serving this town longer than any chain store, and we plan on keeping it that way!" We sure don't feel like friends or family by having poor service and to have to pay more. Unrivaled customer service isn't making us make multiple trips or paying more. And lastly, at least the conglomerates can fill entire prescriptions and don't gouge prices as much as this "family" pharmacy.

I went to the doctor with a high fever and after testing, was told I had the flu. It was early enough that the doc believed I would benefit from Tamiflu. She stated that I should pick it up and take it immediately, because as each minute passes, the flu virus is replicating itself. I was almost to the point of delirium with the fever. It was really making me crazy and I just wanted to drive through, pick up my meds and go home. When I arrived, one lane of their drive thru had a pylon in it and the other had an over-turned shopping cart. I almost burst into tears right there. The last thing I wanted to do was to have to haul myself out of my car and walk in. Why on earth would they close the drive thru?!?! I made it inside and the place was PACKED. I stood in line for 15 minutes (there were only 3 people ahead of me in the pick-up line) before they got my name. I was told it would be "just a few minutes." Tamiflu is pre-packaged - there are no pills for a pharmacist to count out. It's a box with the exact dosage and # of pills I needed. There could not be an easier prescription to fill. Seriously. At this point, my body was screaming for me to lay down. I had tears streaming down my face because the fever was making me so miserable. I sat in one of the waiting chairs, coughing uncontrollably and spreading the flu virus all over the area full of adults and children. I asked why their drive thru was closed - they explained that their computers were down. That made no sense. They had a full compliment of staff. People who are disabled or weak should not have to walk in the cold weather and stand inside coughing on everyone when they could just as easily sit in their warm car and wait. I kept seeing people walk up and get their medicines in about 10 minutes. I surveyed people around me, asking how long they had been there. Everyone was there a shorter span than I had been. After I had been sitting for an hour, crying nearly uncontrollably from the fever, I mustered the energy to get back to the counter to ask what was taking so long. The woman walked away and then came back and said, "the pharmacist is looking at it. It should just be a few minutes." Twenty minutes later, I was told again, that the pharmacist was "looking" at my prescription. WTF is your $#@! problem? You have a freaking graduate degree from college - why do you have to 'look' at a pre-packaged box of Tamiflu for an hour and a half? Give it to me NOW! Any pharmacist knows how important it is to get this medicine in the patient IMMEDIATELY. I kept waiting and becoming more crazy with my fever. I kept looking at my watch and could not believe how long I had been there. About every 10 minutes, someone would ask, "what's your last name again?" OMG! Seriously? I've been here for over an hour - you've asked me 7 or 8 times - why have you not memorized it by now - or more importantly - given me my freaking medicine!? I hear someone in the back, presumably the professional 'looker' of all that is Tamiflu, shout out my last name. I responded loudly, "Bingo!" and the throngs of other people burst out laughing. I go to the counter and the woman says AGAIN, "what's your last name?" Are you freaking kidding me? I'm the woman who has been crying in front of you for AN HOUR AND A HALF and you STILL are asking me - especially right after I acknowledged that my name was just called?!?!? If thoughts could kill, everyone behind the counter would have dissolved. If you've never had a fever high enough to make your brain feel like you're melting - you probably do not understand the state I was in - but all I could do to maintain my dignity was to repeat to myself in my head, "don't do anything to get arrested - just hold on until you can get the meds and get out." The woman asks me to sit again while the $$#@!$ pharmacist "LOOKS" at my prescription again. Am I being punked? Finally, it is ready after I have been there nearly 2 freaking hours. The same woman who still does not remember my name says, "with your insurance, the medicine will be $104 - I know it's expensive, do you still want it?" OK - NOW - if thoughts could kill, a magical tree chipper would have appeared and she would have gone into it feet first. What if I didn't have the money? Why in the world would you make an obviously very sick person agonize in pain for their medicine for 2 HOURS before telling them - BTW, this is likely more than you've ever paid for medicine in your life? I paid for it and barely made it to my car. The fever had me shaking so bad, I could barely open the box at this point. This stems from bad training and bad management. These people were woefully unprepared to handle flu season when their computers went south. They should train and do drills and have a triage and order numbers or something. This was utter chaos.

They speak "at you" in a condescending manner and then REFUSE to fill your prescriptions for pain medication, even when you explain to them that your doctor-patient communication is transparent and fully within federal guidelines! They treat all pain patients as though we're all drug-seeking addicts, and never even consider that there are genuine conditions where the pain is so intense that many of us feel we'd rather be dead than live in such agony. Personally, I have nearly 42 YEARS of addiction RECOVERY under my belt. I have spoken at countless schools. Prisons and other institutions regarding the disease of addiction. Clearly their so-called education teaches them little other than to demonize all pain patients. Their ignorance could cost people their lives. Something needs to be done about the way the medical "professionals" and pharmacists treat people eho are already suffering. It's not my choice to need pain relief. It saddens me deeply the ignorant and distasteful way that ESPECIALLY WALMART GBC Pharmacy belittles patients, talks down to us, and refuses to fill our prescriptions even when the request does not violate any local or federal laws. They're pathetic and abusive!

While it does still remain the worst pharmacy interaction of my life, the vast majority of my interactions have been positive. As a result, I'm rerating the pharmacy and toning down my review. I hate leaving a bad review based on one bad experience. And, no, I was not asked to revise my review. I'm doing this on my own free will because everybody and every business have a bad day from time to time. Worst pharmacy experience of my life. The Walmart Pharmacy app prompted me on a Saturday if I wanted to refill a prescription. I clicked refill. App tells me medication will be ready on Sunday. I go in on Sunday and prescription is not ready. In fact, they inform me, it's "too soon" to refill the prescription. I get treated like a criminal. Fortunately the next day I didn't have to deal with the weekend pharmacist and my problem was solved. Hopefully this won't happen again and I'm not trusting the Walmart Pharmacy as much. It's just not synced up very well with reality. Humiliating situation.
