I had a really upsetting and uncomfortable experience at this Walgreens. I went in to purchase a 10-pack of insulin syringes -- something Walgreens clearly states on their own website is allowed in California without a prescription, as long as you're purchasing 30 or fewer. I was simply picking them up for a family member. When I got to the staff at the pharmacy register, I greeted them and then stated if I can purchase a bag of insulin syringes for my family member. I was looked up and down by the employee, who then walked over to the pharmacist. He came back and told me they couldn't sell the syringes to me unless I had that family member's prescription. I wasn't there to debate policies -- I was doing a favor for a diabetic family member and felt completely judged and dismissed in the process. Feeling embarrassed and confused, I checked Walgreens' website outside, and sure enough -- it says in plain English that in California, syringes can be sold over the counter without a prescription, up to 30 units. I went back in and spoke to a manager, showed them the policy, and all they could do was point to the small print that says it's "ultimately up to the pharmacist's discretion." Here's the bigger issue: this location is surrounded by a large homeless population, and I understand the concern about selling syringes to individuals struggling with addiction. But even denying clean needles to addicts does more harm than good. A policy like this, when enforced without context or compassion, isn't protective -- it's dangerous. This pharmacist has either deprived a diabetic of life-saving medical supplies, or pushed a desperate addict closer to sharing a potentially disease-infected syringe just to survive another day. Either way, it's a failure in basic public health ethics. Denial doesn't stop drug use -- it just makes it riskier and more inhumane. If Walgreens wants to empower its pharmacists to make case-by-case decisions, fine -- but don't advertise clear and accessible over-the-counter availability if the actual in-store experience is entirely different. Very professional and polite! Pleasantly surprised. Both the Pharmaceutical and front counter staff at this Walgreens location were absolutely delightful. This location is at the corner of what has to be one of the busiest intersections in San Diego. I was there at 11am to 11:30am, prime time. The store was clean, organized and pleasant. I called Walgreens in San Diego Store #6094 at 2:19 pm 9/18 because my medication was out of stock at CVS. It's out of stock everywhere which I understand. I still need it, so I still am going to check everywhere. I was on hold (fine) and someone picked up the phone and said "Hi your wait time is going to be at least 20 minutes." Click, back on hold. That's fine if it's busy and I wait 20 minutes. It seemed an effort for me to hang up. When it was my turn they did not have my medication, which the same person told me as if I was an idiot for asking because there is a national shortage. I am not a pharmacy, to assume I have knowledge of medication stock is obtuse. To be irritated that I could possibly assume a pharmacy might have that medication, or to ask about it, is ridiculous. I am just a person who needs their medicine. CVS has a voicemail system. If Walgreens wants to stay in business I suggest they follow CVS with a streamlined voicemail system, happy employees and replace the angry little thing that answered my call. I know consumers are crazy, and I treat each of mine with a new palette. To generalize or assume human behavior is simply put, idiotic. The saying when you assume it puts the ass in u and me comes to mind. I understand in my business that my insider knowledge is mine alone. It always boggles my mind when people don't understand customers are the reason you have a job. And if customers stop using your business/pharmacy/whatever you don't have a job anymore. Or maybe Walgreens treats their employees badly, idk. What I do know is I called 20 pharmacies today and none of them were as rude and dismissive as the person I spoke to, despite 19 of them being out of stock. This review has to do with the pharmacy. The people behind the counter are always sweet and friendly. Always have good interactions with them. My complaint has to do with the automated system. It always tells me my medication is ready to be picked up and then when i come to pick it up, it's never ready. I am starting to get EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED with this store! I use the app to order ALL of my medications. I have told them time and time again to exclude me from the automated refill process. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I have been coming here for years and I cannot begin to explain how incompetent the pharmacy staff is. I send them my prescriptions a week early. Still on full day I have to call to get them to start filling it. Show up to pick it up and they typically tell me to "come back in an hour" or worse "we don't have this in stock we have to order it" - after they have known about it for over a week. The people here really don't care about their customers. It could be a life sustaining medication and they would probably just throw their hands up after taking up 3 hours out of your day. Do NOT go to this pharmacy. I was on vacation in San Diego, and I needed six pills (3 different medications) as we were extending our trip. I called Walgreens and my online provider on a Sunday April 14th at 5 pm to see if I could get the refill on Monday morning. The online provider told me to let Walgreens know all they had to do was call them to get authorization for the "vacation override". I called Walgreens Monday morning at 9 am. I talked to Michelle. She was very sweet and told me to give her 30 minutes. Since there had been a problem with this pharmacy last time I was in town, I decided to wait until after noon. When I went in, I waited in line behind four people (about 20 minutes...two of the four people were very upset about the service they had received. Their prescriptions were not ready as well. An older gentleman looked like he was going to cry as he was turned away from the window!). I was told that two of the medications were ready, but that I needed an authorization from my doctor for the third medication. I asked the pharmacist if he could call the doctor. He got defensive, and told me my online provider should have done that, and that "it wasn't his job. Go to CVS or Walmart or Rite Aid if you have a problem with our service!" I think he saw my face, because he then told me, "Step aside and I'll call your doctor. We are understaffed and need to hire more people!" It literally took him 5 minutes to call my doctor to get the approval. Total time I was in that Walgreens waiting for six pills was 50 minutes! Bilal, a pharmacist, called me the next day and left a message, telling me that they are short staffed, and the good news is that starting next week, they are going to be under new management and they will be hiring more employees. Hopefully, this is true, but I would avoid this pharmacy unless you absolutely have to go there! read more

This is an awful pharmacy. It's small, in a lousy location, a campland for the homeless and the pharmacy is always short staffed and everyone there is so stressed out all the time. I could not get my prescriptions transferred from CVS to them so I gave up and kept CVS even though I now have to pay for my medications. It's sad because I absolutely LOVE the one in Hawaii and it was the whole reason for my switching health plans to include Walgreens in the first place. read more

I read the reviews and was very nervous to pick up my prescription from this pharmacy! However, my dermatologist told me the CVS up charges a lot for their medication's and so she recommends picking it up from a different pharmacy which led me to Walgreens. I currently don't take any medication's besides this new prescription so I was hesitant after reading the reviews. But the pharmacy staff was super helpful and quick. It only took me around five minutes of waiting for them to contact my insurance to make sure I have a low co-pay for my prescription which is notoriously expensive. The pharmacist was super knowledgeable and explain to me all the side effects that could come along with taking this medication. I have to continue to pick up this medication for the next six months so I will continue to update this review with my experience at this pharmacy. read more

I thought CVS was horrible with their phones. But Walgreens has beaten them. Been on hold for 20 min. They pick up then put me back on hold 5 times with no one actually answering the phone. I know the company has access to see how many seconds/minutes it takes for the pharmacy to answer their phones. But the staff has found a way around that measure. He treated me like a child and a criminal all at the same time by telling me to sit down multiple times and then denying me service when he was too busy to take the time to find my prescription. He told me he wouldn't help me because I used a word he wasn't so fond of. It's called freedom of speech, he should look it up. This is the sketchiest Walgreens in town! It didn't use to be so bad, but over the last year+ it has become the worst. There are some issues that are not the store's fault due to location, but this Walgreens has problems that could be helped with better management and maintenance. Not the store's fault... Mentally ill and/or drug addicted people constantly loitering near the entrance and in the parking lot. Not only do you have to coordinate your entrance to the store to a moment when they wander away from the door, but I've been inside the store when someone comes in ranting, raving and harassing the people inside. This is a sad situation all around and really no one's fault, but why deal with it when there are other Walgreens to go to? Probably the store's fault... The store's outer area is filthy with trash, urine stains and poop smears of an unknown species. This is likely because of the problem stated above with the mentally ill/probably homeless/probably drug addicts, but the store should do a better job of staying on top of maintenance instead of letting the grossness marinate in the summer heat for who knows how long. Definitely the store's fault... 1. Failure to keep lines moving. When I was last in the store, there was a woman buying an entire shopping cart full of tiny items, that the cashier was taking FOREVER to ring up. I don't know what kind of a-hole goes to Walgreens to buy enough items to decorate their entire house, but once management sees something like that, they should immediately call another cashier to start a new line (or do it themselves). Instead, they allow the line to get 15 deep, before sending someone to help. I can get through the Costco line on a Saturday faster than that. 2. The security guard is one of those morons who wears her mask hanging off her face and not even covering her nose. How can a store enforce a mask rule when their own employee won't follow it? I think Corporate needs to get involved here and see who is running this place. The next time I need to go to Walgreens, I will drive a little bit further and go to a different one. read more

Horrible wait time for prescriptions every time. Went to ER last night, prescriptions were called in to Walgreens that night, I called Walgreens at 11:00am next day to make sure prescriptions were ready, I was told they would be done within 30-45 minutes. Went at 3:00pm to pick them up, was told they were were working on them, had to wait 30 minutes for them to complete. This similar scenario happens every time I've gone there. The only reason I go there is because it's the pharmacy my insurance requires me to go to. read more

I'm not sure why but I prefer Walgreens over other drug stores. I think it's just a friendly vibe. They always seem to have what I need. Today wasn't the case but holiday decorations and sales take some of the room for their regular products. And they were so nice. Today, I had to run in to pick up some supplies for the medical kit on the boat-which they had, as always. And the item that was $16 had a $2 discount with a Walgreens card. It's easy to get and I just use my phone number. The only thing I couldn't find is peanut brittle. They always have a certain brand that comes in a box and is perfect. They do have some beautiful decorations and so many holiday foods for homes, parties or gifts. I recommend Walgreens. It is a great place to go. read more

The HillCrest, CVS, treated me for years, as if I was not deemed to be treated with any common human respect, only because they have are bothered, once in a while, by some dishonest people so; they will not even bother to look up your file for your Doctor's, request ! Once the Hillcrest CVS, had me waiting in tears, just trying to get my anti- anxiety medicine, until my Dr., gave them a piece of his mind about their superior and suspicious attitude over their phone. Incompetent is the best way to describe this pharmacy. They've been filling my prescription for years, prescribed by a doctor with a physical office in San Diego, but teledoc service provided by a San Francisco office. I had to physically go in to the location to ask why one of my scripts wasn't filled after 3 weeks (because the 4 times I called I was hung up on before talking to anyone). They said they don't fill prescriptions from out of area. No notification before this and now I have no medicine. read more

There's a good reason this Walgreens has such low reviewer scores. I had to call a total of 3 times and was on a looping hold for OVER 1 hour. The automatic message would say 3 people on hold ahead of me. Then all of a sudden the music changes and I THINK someone is going to answer, giving me false hope, then all of a sudden it changes from music to a dial tone. I think ok, someone is going to pick up because surely after 15 minutes, and only being the 4th in the queue, someone would pick up. NOPE. The phone continues to ring and ring and ring. I let it ring for another 6 minutes! Shame on me for having high hopes? This happened 3 times... over an hour I wasted just to speak to the pharmacist or a pharmacy staff member. The Pharmacy must be understaffed and Walgreens is to cheap to provide what is needed to run an efficient pharmacy. I've been to multiple Walgreens and they are the same. On the phone they hang up on you, in the drive through line you wait with no one available to assist you, medications that aren't standard are a difficult process to acquire what you need-if you get them at all. The service is horrible at Walgreens so I assume their staff is pretty miserable also. I do have an option of home delivery directly with my insurance so I think I have to say goodbye to Walgreens. read more

I don't know what is going on with this Walgreens in particular, but the pharmacy is impossible to get in contact with (been trying for 4 days, holds have been over an hour one time they just straight hung up on me after asking me to hold and leaving me there for only to hang up on me 45 minutes later) always "more than three callers ahead of you" forever now. Most importantly though! And I can't stress this enough... it is taking on average 3 FULL DAYS to fill my prescriptions, including antibiotics for my pneumonia. Put in a refill request today for 4 medications yesterday that were supposed to be ready at 10:00am... it's 7pm and none of them are ready for pickup. One of which has to be filled by the refill date or it can be extremely hazardous. It can not be 3 days late. I can't even transfer my medications to another Walgreens. This is ridiculous.
