Witnessed her yelling condescendingly to an elderly customer who was trying to understand the difference between his medications. It was absolutely appalling and uncomfortable for everyone in line. You KNOW it's bad when the pharmacist at Taraval says this pharmacy location is incompetent. Updating my review from 15 years ago. One of my favorite pharmacists is still there and still outstanding - Mary. Pretty much everything else has become awful. The wait in line in the store can be forever just to pick up a prescription. I just spend 23 mins on hold waiting to speak to the pharmacy - only to have the recording suddenly tell me the pharmacy is going to lunch for 30 mins and to call back (or hold on). Doubtless, Walgreens sanctimonious 'explanation' would be the staff deserve a lunch. Of course that's true - but the real problems are that 1) Walgreens understaffs pharmacies with one pharmacist vs two who could take turns taking a break / lunch, 2) they've closed numerous stores without adding staff in remaining stores, 3) stores were understaffed to begin with. It seems clear that Walgreens is in the process of backing out of the retail pharmacy business - but there really aren't a lot of alternatives left in this highly dysfunctional business. read more

The pharmacist (the actual pharmacist) was competent, very helpful, and very pleasant...when I finally got to talk to her. We were on the phone. I had asked, "Can I please speak to your supervisor?" because the service had been so bad--cold, indifferent, uninformed, uninformative, simply telling me what the computer said, repeatedly. The telephone service, generally, is unimaginably bad. Everytime the robot says something different. Sometimes I can order a refill, other times I have to call back. Sometimes she (the robot) says I can order a refill, then makes it impossible to do so. I went into the store twice yesterday because the first time the line for the pharmacy was about 50 people long--and moving very slowly. The second time was at 8:25 pm, about half an hour before closing. Then the line was down to about 15 people, and still moving very slowly. People had grabbed chairs and were sitting in them. The shift manager (who looked as if he'd just woken up) explained that only one computer was working. Still, it took many minutes per customer. We have been customers of this Walgreens for 25+ years. Today was my last time visiting this location. It is truly amazing how one location can get so bad in just the last few years. I recently switched over to this pharmacy, since I now live in this neighborhood. I will say that having worked in a pharmacy in the past - this one is quite a busy one with lots of customers. That being said, they are understaffed too, but that isn't the pharmacy's fault! They sometimes only have one pharm tech managing the front, which isn't enough for the line which seems to average 6-8 people at any given time of the day. That also being said, the staff I feel is nice here. What helps is calling ahead to make sure they've received your prescription, and will fill it for you at that moment in time. Anyway, I appreciate the service here, and also my prescription was ready when I got to the front of the line. This is a review of my experience at the store and the interaction that I had with the security guard today. He asked me where was the stuff that I was looking at. I said I just was looking at it and I put it back on the self. I said I don't appreciate that you accused me of something that I didn't do. I just looked at a couple of ankle braces. Decided not to get them because I didn't like the look of them. I said you can search my bag, he said you obviously took it you're not welcomed in the store, I said fine. I had an appointment down the street and had time before. I said you can look at the security footage and prove that I'm not lying. I'm not homeless and look decent. Apparently it's against the law to look at something and put it back and walk around the store. I never been treated like this ever. It was like racism in reverse. I will be contacting the store manager to share my experience. I was defending myself apparently I can't defend myself standing up to someone who is contracted by Walgreens is wrong. I wasn't trying to be a "Karen" I was shocked and upset I was being accused of something. I called the store and talked to the manager and she apologized to me and said that I hope you comeback soon. She inquired if I needed help, which I did. She then talked me through the options and assisted me to make the right choice for my specific needs. This Walgreens is a typical small store situated within a major densely populated city! They have enough items overall, but half as many as the larger stores on the peninsula. The line at the Pharmacy is always very long and more often than most stores of any kind, the price on the shelf is different from what rings up at the register. The shopping carts won't allow you to leave the store without locking up on you, so if you have paper towels or other larger items, you need to take them from the store to your car without the shopping cart. Once I even saw a guy passed out in the vestibule. None of that is really the fault of the store, and I really don't have any other complaints, but I started writing this review thinking I was writing about another Walgreens at Westlake and decided to just write a quick review of this Walgreens store as long as I started this review. Amazing how much change has come to my neighborhood Walgreens. My prescriptions are being filled on time. The line for pharmacy pickup is much quicker. The pharmacy staff is picking up the phone in a timely manner now. They are finally having additional cashiers help checkout in the front when there are a line of customers. I hear the new store manager is making a lot of changes for the better. Always my go to pharmacy for the easy public parking lot next to this Walgreens and the bountiful shops and restaurants in the West Portal neighborhood. All you have to do is walk into this Walgreens to see why Walgreens across the city are closing. Of course, a major problem we've seen is stealing, and that contribute substantially. This is a good location in West Portal, very convenient. Parking can be tough as it is for all merchants in the area as well as San Francisco in general. I tried to call in a prescription for a patient who is in pain. I waited a long time before someone answered my call. His name is Jay, a technician. But he would not take the prescription and asked me to call back to leave a message. I called back and waited for a long time again but was never given the option to leave a message. I have had good experience picking up my online order in this store until today. I got confirmation emails regarding my order and said my order is ready for pick up. But when I got in the store to pick up the so-called "ready for pick up" order, the young cashier lady in red shirt couldn't find my order bag and then told me that my order was not packed. She said she had to pick the items in the order again for me, which is fine. However, the main merchandise I made in this order was out of stock and she couldn't fulfill the two items that I previously got confirmation. The reason I was told is the staff who took care of the order didn't pack it in the bag but still scan as it's packed. What?? First time heard of such thing. How come there is no control for the procedure of fulfilling online orders. Don't choose this store for online pick up if you really want to make sure your order is really ready. The location of this Walgreens is perfect! This store is so big that it is very hard to miss it if you are in the West Portal area of the city. Came in today to get some water and realized that they already have Halloween decorations and candy out for everyone to see! Cant believe Halloween is here already but at this store they are getting everybody ready with all the orange and black, GO GIANTS!!! This is also one of the more relaxed Walgreens stores that I have been to. The staff is friendly and they have just about everything that you would expect from Walgreens. If you are looking for ice cream, drinks, stationary, cards, toothpaste, painkillers, or snacks they will have it here. This Walgreens seems to have developed a culture of hostility toward the customers which goes way back and began with only a few of the so called customer service employees and eventually developed into the majority. Those who are genuinely friendly seem to leave quickly or they are laid off or become hostile. At check out - ask a question and you often get no response - none. The staff hurries some of the customers through the checkout process by constantly prompting them what button to push - not giving them time to respond themselves even when the lines are virtually non-existent and by calling out next before (in my case) I have the opportunity to put my credit card back in my purse. This is selective and in my case it has been obvious for some time that I am being discriminated against and disliked probably based on my ethnicity since I am always polite. Some customers are given as much time as they need and treated with respect. I have been treated like an object. Yesterday I clearly asked for a bag and the depressed looking staff member didn't do so and when I ask him if he forgot to give me a bag, he looked at me with contempt, grabbed a bag and stuffed my purchase into it crumbling my receipt in an obvious state of agitation and called out next -before i had a chance to even take my purchase off the counter or put my card into my purse. Then there is the practice of practically running the customer over with the supply carts as the staff moves directly into the space the customer is standing in. The one exception to this negative and depressed environment is a long term Asian or Filipino lady with grey hair who is always polite. As a former social worker and elected union officer, I would change your management and also make sure that in this integrated City, you hire a group of employees reflective of our population. read more
