Bristol Town Beach provided a perfect setting for gathering, eating, playing, and relaxing for the entire family! We got there nice and early and found a spot near the big field and not far from the swings and bathrooms. We scored a couple of picnic tables in the shade. Throughout the rest of the day, the park/picnic area filled up, but we never felt crowded and, honestly, it was nice to see so many people enjoying the beautiful day. The beach is rocky, so wear water shoes. It's a good beach for little ones because there aren't big waves to knock them down. If you keep walking down the beach, you get to a path where some of our group went fishing. I remember going to this beach as far back as the early 80's and a LOT of good things have been done to update and upgrade over the years. The only part of this park/beach that absolutely needs some attention are the restrooms. Wow, hot mess! And it's such a contrast because everything else is so nice! That being said, it is nice that there are bathrooms and that they are easily accessible. Overall, we were all thrilled with our new Family Picnic Day venue. Even with having to pay for parking (which we didn't have to do in Newport), I'm pretty sure we will be returning to Bristol Town Beach from now on!

Colts State Park is an amazing waterfront park in Bristol, Rhode Island. It's a little drive…read moresoutheast of Providence or north of Newport, but worth a visit if you like wildlife and views of the New England waterfront. There is one paid parking area closest to the beach, volleyball nets, and covered picnic tables, but there's plenty of free parking lots throughout the rest of the park. The waterfront areas include a fishing pier and plenty of benches. The lots are thoughtfully laid out along the walking/biking paths, with plenty of scattered picnic tables. Wildlife is abundant here as we saw loads of geese and quite a few seagulls. Some of the areas of the park are under maintenance and the benches are a bit rusted out, but these minor things didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of Colt State Park, so look forward to returning here.

Peaceful trails on a…read more very quiet island Prudence Island is an island in the middle of Narragansett Bay that's about 7 miles long and only about a mile wide. No fancy restaurants, no B&B's, no places to buy crummy t-shirts and not even a public bathroom. It doesn't care about or even wants tourists and about two thirds of the island is conservation land. There are some houses on the island but not many people go to visit. That's part of what makes it so special. There is a ferry from the town of Bristol that goes out there or you can just kayak or sail a few miles across the bay. Lots of places to land and nobody really cares what you do on Prudence as long as you are quiet about it. It's a cool place to bike ride but it also has some nice hiking. Most of the trials are in the middle of the island and are extremely well taken care of by the people that live here. They trails are short but most of them connect so you can jump from one path to another and keep hiking for a while. The whole island has ticks and proper precautions are absolutely necessary because Lyme's Disease is a real danger here. Not vigorous or difficult hiking by any means but the scenery and isolation is stunning. Absolutely quiet except for the numerous birds. No car noise, cell phones or people talking. It's very unlikely you will ever see another person even during the "crowded" summer months. During the winter the trails are beautiful and hiking through the quiescent snow is a great and ethereal experience. The ocean is never far away and the smell and sound of the salt water is your constant companion. The trails have rather mundane names like The Army Road, School House Trail, Crow's Nest and Bob Clachrie Trail. Nothing really special about any particular trail except for the fact they are on a very peaceful and isolated island. With all the noise and chaos in the world that alone is very special. But, unlike Rhode Island's more pristine beaches, it's free, it's only 10 minutes from Providence, and it's never too crowded! Dogs are allowed, which is both a pro and a con. I love watching the pups frolic in the water, but I live in fear of stepping right on a fresh turd with bare feet. I probably wouldn't bring kids to this beach, since there are zero amenities like lifeguards, bathrooms, etc. But there's plenty of sun, sand, and surf to go around!

I tried to sit closer to the water and the bugs were still awful. I could not believe it. I had to leave within the hour and ended up spending $40 at CVS because I had about 50 bites on my body (I am not exaggerating.) I don't know if this is the norm for this side of the beach since I have not been in awhile but it took my body two weeks to get rid of all of the bites!

Several years ago, this beautiful waterfront property was an amusement park. After the amusement…read morepark closed, Rocky Point was abandoned for several years until the state of RI purchased it and reopened the property as a state park. You can still see the remnants of some of the rides, and there are informative signs throughout displaying the history of the property. I love the walking paths here, and I especially love poking around the shoreline at all of the little beach areas (some which are only accessible at low tide) and looking for shells and seaglass. Several of the walking paths are paved and are wheel chair accessible, and others a just a little more rugged with some climbing over rocks to get down to the shoreline. I also love the large fishing pier and this weekend my daughter and I relaxed on one of the benches out at the end of the pier and just enjoyed the sunshine. Rocky Point is an awesome place to spend time outdoors.
